Sandy

Expectations: Sandy Will Be Severe
 updated on: 05:46am, October 29, 2012

"Many meteorologists agree: Hurricane Sandy is going to be severe with strong winds, flooding, and power outages, at the very least.

Sandy is a large, slow-moving storm. Many people who have listened to the hype of other storms (which turned out to be quite weak in comparison), are skeptical about the warnings coming about Sandy.

However, the weather models on which meteorologists base their forecasts, vary little. As of now they say central New Jersey north to Rhode Island, including Philadelphia and New York City could get the worst hit."

"New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) put aside his campaigning for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Sunday to praise President Barack Obama for his responsiveness to the Garden State's needs in preparing for Hurricane Sandy.

During a briefing with emergency personnel, residents and press, Christie thanked Obama for holding a conference call with him and governors of other states expected to be impacted by the storm, the Star-Ledger reports.

“I appreciated the president’s outreach today in making sure that we know he’s watching this and is concerned about the health and welfare and safety of the people of the state of New Jersey,” he said."

Governor "It's immoral." Romney would send FEMA back to the states?  Apparently he doesn't understand that the poorest states are the states that solidly support him, and that he believes poor states like Mississippi and Louisiana would be able to handle a disaster without federal help.  Is he that naive?  It's just  more of the same "I've got mine, screw you!" mentality, and it's everyone for himself.

E pluribus unum.

And we're all in this together.

Be safe, everyone.

Again we can count on the left to politicize even this. Good to see they didn't disappoint.

Be safe yourself.

@Anon 9:13,

It's a reminder of what you'll get--especially the poor states--if Romney wins the presidency.

No federal relief for you poor guys, it's "immoral."

Shaw... be safe and keep dry, if you can... my prayers are with you and your family...

Interesting that the framework for FEMA had its genesis under a young secretary of commerce named Herbert Hoover who vowed during the great floods of 1927 that the federal government would be there for Americas citizens in the event of catastrophic natural disaster...

Romney goal is to reduce the cost to the federal government, period. We will do that by shifting the cost to the states and to individuals, thereby being able to reduce federal taxes. He has plenty of money to pay for his own expenses. He lives in a state with plenty of money. He doesn't give a shit about anyone else. His decisions are based on what is good for himself, not for the American people.

Dave, thank you.

I live in the city, and our power lines are underground. I'm hoping we'll be okay. I did, however, make a double portion of eggplant parmigiano, beef stew, and lentil soup. We've got flashlights and candles just in case.

I had to go to the dentist this morning [ugh!], and making that normally easy walk across Boston City Hall Plaza was not fun. The wind was pretty strong even at that time, 9:30 AM. The usually crowded plaza was deserted, and coming back to my neighborhood, it was eerie. Hardly a person on the streets--most businesses closed and boarded up.

Boston Harbor is just a few yards away from me, but I'm on the inner harbor, so I don't expect anything dangerous to happen.

I'm more concerned about the folks in New York and New Jersey.

Jerry,

I wonder why Romney would suggest saving federal dollars by shifting responsibility for disasters to states--especially poor states. Is he nuts? Yet he would increase the defense budget even when the Pentagon isn't asking for an increase.

Dave Miller said...

Does anyone think Mississippi, or maybe Rhode Island could afford to ever finance the repair and rebuilding after a disaster if they were forced to use only funds from their states?

Maybe they could, but the taxation rates they would have to impose to make it financially feasible would have to be astronomically high to get those resources.

Maybe Silver can explain how this could happen.

Dave, imagine the Gulf Coast states, which are among the poorest in the nation, having to individually deal with the catastrophe of a storm, say like Sandy.

I think Romney is just saying what his base likes to hear. No honest person running for president of the third most populous country on the -planet would make such an reckless suggestion as he did.

He's pandering to the base.

Mitt was a very moderate liberal governor here in Massachusetts, and remember, believes in universal health care! Socialized medicine is his legacy here in the Bay State.

He's just playing a no-taxes, every-selfish-man-and-woman-for him/herself politician on the campaign trail.

And his base believes this incomparable shape-shifter.

Shaw,
"...why Romney would suggest saving federal dollars by shifting responsibility for disasters to states...he would increase the defense budget"

He does not want to spend federal dollars helping masses of people. He is willing to spend federal dollars on defense because to goes to big corporations which are run by people just like him. Notice, he wants to spend on big ticket items, not on equipment and benefits for the troops and veterans.

Best wishes through the storms to all exposed. I am flying from SZan Diego to Florida and the airports were quiet.

My sister in-law lives in Manhattan on the 6th floor. The first two floors were evacuated yesterday. However, many of the people ignored the call. Now, they have already started calling 911 and emergency services for help.

Makes me wonder why so many people refuse to heed advice and help themselves while the opportunity is there before they put themselves and emergency crews in danger.

Shaw,

Regardless of our slight differences of opinion on occasion, Hope and your family are safe and come through this unscathed.

8:45 PM, heavy rain, some strong gusts, but that's about it for us here at the edge of Boston's inner harbor. Grateful that's all we're experiencing. But I'm concerned about a niece who attends school in New York City, and other family members in New York state and central Mass., and everyone else who has to ride out this historic storm.

Thank you all for your concern and good wishes.

billy,

I'm saving it in the event that Mitt Romney becomes president.

Then only you will know who caused the end of the world!

At this stage, I'm struck by a pair of antipodal politicians who
appear to be concerned and effective in dealing with the hurricane: Chris Christie and Barack Obama. (!?)
