General John Kelly: "He said that, in his opinion, Mr. Trump met the definition of a fascist, would govern like a dictator if allowed, and had no understanding of the Constitution or the concept of rule of law."

Republicans slam Trump's Syria pullout: 'Disaster,' 'Betrayal,' 'Mistake'

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said the "withdrawal of U.S. forces from Syria would only benefit Russia, Iran, and the Assad regime."

Digby:

The withdrawal leaves the United States' Kurdish allies in northern Syria vulnerable to attack by Turkish forces. Trump remarked last summer that Erdogan "has a big problem with the Kurds ... and he was going to wipe out the Kurds, who helped us with ISIS." Trump claimed he told Erdogan, "You can’t do it. And he didn’t do it."

 That was last June.

I thought this was a parody, but it is NOT!

h/t Daily Kos:

Donald Trump's betrayal of Syrian Kurds has been blasted by horrified Republican allies, with even forever-toadies Lindsey Graham and Liz Cheney, as well as the usually simpering Mitt RomneyMarco Rubio, and Susan Collins condemning Trump's act.
Trump's response is so unhinged that it is difficult to believe it is real. It is.

As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!). They must, with Europe and others, watch over...
....the captured ISIS fighters and families. The U.S. has done far more than anyone could have ever expected, including the capture of 100% of the ISIS Caliphate. It is time now for others in the region, some of great wealth, to protect their own territory. THE USA IS GREAT!

From "great and unmatched wisdom" to a threat to "obliterate the Economy of Turkey" ... it is impossible to even respond to that.

Replying to

“In my great and unmatched wisdom??” The Lizard of Oz has spoken. Please take the keys away from this horror show.

RN He didn't consult the Pentagon on this insane policy change! And of course his cultists are standing by him. They don't care what he does.

"U.S. forces on the ground showed us that this is not how they value friendship and alliance,” Mustafa Bali, a spokesman for the S.D.F., wrote on Twitter on Monday, adding that Mr. Trump’s decision was “about to ruin the trust and cooperation between the S.D.F. and U.S.”

Still, the Syrian Kurds have few other supporters to turn to.

Inside Syria, most of what remains of the country’s rebel movement is backed by Turkey and opposes the S.D.F., and its relations with the government of President Bashar al-Assad are chilly.

Some analysts speculate that the Kurds will be forced to court Mr. Assad’s government for protection."

Shaw...

Consult the Pentagon? A president who 'Is smarter than our generals?" Why would a very stable genius do that? This is why Sec Def Mattis resigned.

And this is why we should be worried.

At least a couple of members of the GOP stood up this time.

For the record, why on earth would the Kurds ever trust the US when a Republican is president? Remember, it was after the first Gulf War that the first Bush Admin left them out to dry and they got massacred in Northern Iraq.

Such a good record for the GOP.

Apart from Israel, our strongest allies in the Middle East. They fought with us across Afghanistan, in Iraq and in Syria. And now we've left them to be slaughtered.

And it's upsetting to Geeez... why? Because she and the others are finally faced with the fickleness of the president? Because they have to admit that when they recoiled at all the "embarrassment" caused us by Pres Obama, it really was because he was just a Dem and not based on international respect?

They've been unmasked as the dull normal partisans they are.

Once again... Imagine if Pres Obama had left allies to die on the battlefield, what would they'd say? That he was scum, not fit to be president, weak and compromising America's values.

Now?

Nothing.

Disgusting.

Dave, Yes. But we knew this. They've enabled Trump through all of his high crimes and misdemeanors and excused what they would have deplored had President Obama done what Trump has done. They've made their choice to keep enabling this madman. I don't think they will ever face their betrayal to this country. They will blame the "libtards," the "fake news," everything but themselves. They've kept this horrible man in office, and that should haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Sorry Shaw... it just keeps bubbling up...

"These colors don't run"

Unless the President is named Trump.

Carter tried to rescue soldiers in Iran and it failed, so he was called feckless. A GOP President leaves the South Vietnamese defenseless. Another abandons the Kurds in Northern Iraq. Then another abandons our allies again in Syria.

And what do we hear from the GOP partisans?

Nothing.

Would Trump have allied us with Churchill?

Based on his actions so far?

I doubt it...

Pat Robertson: Trump Is ‘In Danger Of Losing The Mandate Of Heaven’

The right-wing televangelist tore into Trump’s decision to leave Kurdish fighters in Syria to fend for themselves as Turkey prepares to invade.

When you lose Robertson there are serious cracks in the base. Look for him to walk it back and say it was all fake news.

The Kurds are our allies.

But... How and when can we get out of our eternal wars and "police actions" without doing harm? It won't happen, but we need to do so anyway. All of them.

Dave Miller said...

Howard... that's the tension right? We got involved and made commitments. How do disentangle ourselves? Whatever we choose, I think it's best done in consultation with our allies on the ground.

Duck... you've probably hit that nail on the head. He'll be walking back before the end of the week so he "reclaim the blessing" of God. What charlatans.

Hey, have you noticed that when things get too hairy, the Mothership takes a short day excursion to funny post and make us laugh island? Anything to face the reality that everything they mocked in Pres Obama, his "feckessness" his "lies" his "lack of exhorting men to care for their families" and his "arrogance" are literally on display in Pres Trump everyday.

Ducky, Howard, and Dave,,

A quick look around the far right blogsphere shows that they're dispirited and discouraged just now with where public opinion is heading. And it's not in Trump's favor by any means.

58% of the American people favor the impeachment inquiry and 49% favor impeachment and removal from office. That is an amazing shift just from a month ago!

When you have the Senate Republicans angry and even TV Evangelists, you're in trouble. The Trumpistas don't want to face that cruel fact, so they put up silly blog posts, stick their fingers in their ears and shout, "LA! LA! LA! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!!"

I don't see this as surprising in the least. It is more surprising that the Pentagon has been able to maintain a cogent strategy in Syria whatsoever these two and one half years since Trump has been in power. Trump made it more than clear in no time flat that he would side with Putin and Assad in the Syrian conflict.

The entire right-wing propaganda machine went to work painting the Syrian resistance as bad players. The barrel bombs which Assad dropped randomly in regions with pockets of resistance to rain so much terror on the peoples became a figment of our imaginations as the venerable BBC and by extension, NPR, was accused of false reporting.

Russian trolls encouraged right-wingers on social media to watch videos by RTV. Hipsters like Caitlin Johnstone and personalities on Russia TV made it look cool to support Putin and Russia.

This is juseverything coming full circle as Trump tosses the ball to his right-wing strongman in Turkey. No surprises here.
