There is a movement in this country (I don't know how many people are involved) to destroy our American democracy by an attempted coup. These people would overturn a legal American election because their candidate, Donald Trump, lost.
If this isn't a treasonous act, what is?
A few weeks ago Indi Samarajiva wrote a piece about the aftermath of the election from the viewpoint of someone who had lived through an attempted coup in Sri Lanka.
His essay was slightly—but only slightly—overheated. And his main point was, I think, essentially correct. I want to share it with you at some length.
Two years ago, I lived through a coup in Sri Lanka. It was stupid. The minority party threw chili powder at everyone in Parliament and took over by farce. Math, however, requires a majority and the courts kicked them out. They gave in. We’d been protesting for weeks and yay, we won.
No.
I didn’t know it at the time, but we had already lost. No one knew — but oh my God, what we lost. The legitimate government came back but it was divided and weak. We were divided and weak. We were vulnerable. . . .
Four months later, on Easter Sunday, some assholes attacked multiple churches and hotels, killing 269 of us. My wife and kids were at church, I had to frantically call them back. Our nation was shattered. Mobs began attacking innocent Muslims. It was out of control. The coup broke our government, and four months later, that broke us. . . .
What is a coup? It’s literally a blow, a strike. Someone hitting your normal processes of government, trying to knock them over. The blow doesn’t have to succeed. It still wounds. In our case it was occupying Parliament without a majority. In yours it’s denying the President-Elect after an election. Whether it fails or not, deep structural damage is done. At the time, however, it just feels dumb.
Frankly, I expected more epaulets and tanks, but this is all you get. A bunch of dumbasses throwing chili powder. Someone at Four Seasons Total Landscaping, next to a dildo shop. . . .
Your Republicans have set forces into play they cannot possibly understand and certainly cannot control. And they don’t even want to. To them, chaos is a ladder.
This is the point. You have taken an orderly system balancing a whole lot of chaos and fucked with it. I don’t know how it’s going to explode, but I can promise you this. It’s going to explode. . . .
What I can tell you — what anyone who’s experienced this can tell you — is that it’s going to be bad. I didn’t know that churches and hotels would blow up on Easter Sunday, but I know now. I’m trying to tell you in advance. You’ve opened up a Pandora’s box of instability. All kinds of demons come out.
I have lived through a coup. It felt like what you’re feeling now. Like watching something stupid and just waiting for it to go away. But it doesn’t go away. You can forget about it, but it doesn’t go away.
There’s a ticking bomb at the heart of your democracy now. Your government, the very idea of governance is fatally wounded. Chaos has been planted at its heart. I don’t know what this chaos will grow into, but I can promise you this. It won’t be good.
I think that’s probably right.

I thought it couldn't get worse. But then yesterday at the White House dawned...
What was President Trump, and I use that term lightly, doing in his, ahem, speech?
Nero is fiddling while Rome burns. 2700 ppl died of Covid yesterday and yet nothing, nothing from the president. Except for a temper tantrum about the elections his own administration have deemed free, fair and fraud free. His VP even administered the oath of office to an incoming Senator from a state that Trump claims held a fraudulent election. Why would VP Pence do that if what Trump was saying was true?
But here's who he is talking to... the clowns who post and believe this stuff...
"After President Trump’s wonderful speech yesterday, a number of elections will be invalidated"
“Attorney General William Barr said Tuesday the Justice Department has not uncovered evidence of widespread voter fraud that would change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Well, they’d have to look for it to find it. Because it’s there. Ask Pat Colbeck, David Kallman, Matt Briggs, Colonel McInnerny, Sydney Powell, Joe Oltmann."
And that's before we get to our Sec State hosting a 900 person event all while the Federal government is saying no gatherings over 25 people. Living examples of the idiocy, non caring attitude this admin displays every single day.
The deeper I dive into that speech Trump gave yesterday the more I am convinced that he and his enablers, like the folks who made his charts, are simply living in Fantasy Land, somewhere behind Walt's Storybook Canal...

Dave,That sounds like the commenter at Dervish's blog who's been predicting indictments of President Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Hunter Biden any day now!
" 'Well, they’d have to look for it to find it. Because it’s there. Ask Pat Colbeck, David Kallman, Matt Briggs, Colonel McInnerny, Sydney Powell, Joe Oltmann.' "
That is an example of a cultist's belief in his/her cult leader. Trump's own AG has stated there was no fraud, and even the Republican Governor and Secretary of State of Georgia have certified the vote stating it was clean and legal. But Trump will have none of it! Trump is unable to accept that he lost, so he HAS to tell himself and his cultists that this past election was rigged! Except, of course, in the states he won, and not where the Republicans won in states that did not go for HIM!
I never thought I'd see Trump's mental state deteriorate this badly in this short time.
He truly is mentally deranged.
Have the Trump cultists seen this?
Wisconsin Supreme Court turns away Trump election lawsuit
What's worse than al of this is the silence from the totality of the GOP Senate. Not a one of these guys could carry the jockstrap, or water for Barry Goldwater or Howard Baker. Both of those men took a "damn the torpedos, full speed ahead" attitude, and went against their party for the good of the United States.
The Lincoln Project people are right... every single one of the current GOP crop of Senators needs to go!
Trump is not a viable 2024 candidate.
He twice lost the popular vote. He's the first failed incumbent in 30 years. He handed the midterms in 2018 to the Dems, and was impeached.
History will consider him an anomaly.
A '24 GOP primary w Trump in it will rightly break the back of the party.
Some of us have been saying that since long before there was The Lincoln Project or a trump presidency.
I guess some are just slow to catch on.
To be a real coup the military would have to follow Trump's orders and claim the election was fraudulent. The U.S. military will do no such thing. The U.S. military will escort Trump out of the White House on inauguration day.
The Republicans have been an anti-constitution party long before Trump was president. (Like McConnell refusing to acknowledge Obama's Supreme Court nominee.)
It's funny to hear Republicans accusing Biden of packing the Courts when that's what Republicans have been doing for years, even approving people the ABA found as unqualified.
Any republican who believes the election will be overturned is delusional. The only way the election will change is if we had a re-vote with no unsolicited mail in ballots being sent out. There are not enough double count ballots and dead people voting to change the results. Trump lost and he has only himself to blame.
Rev, you are spot on that it would be nice to have some elected elites think and act for themselves but that hasn't happened in 12 years. They are all so concerned about keeping their jobs that they don't dare go against their part bosses. Those who try to do what is right they are threatened with losing support from their handlers.

Since Newt Gingrich, the GOP has never acknowledged the legitimacy of a Democratic presidency. They've fought any democratically elected Democratic presidency as illegitimate, and used any power they had legislatively or otherwise to sabotage a presidency, and now to overthrow one.
There are millions of Trumpers who still believe he won and hope that the election will be overturned one way or another.
This is exactly how a democracy is undermined and weakened.
And the current Trumpublican Party is responsible for the weakening of our American democracy. Period.
skudrunner, See my above comment.
Re Obama administration officials being arrested, I heard yesterday (by way of the Stephanie Miller Show) that Joe Biden is wearing a boot not because of a hairline fracture in his foot, but to hide an ankle monitor (he has already been arrested). An alternate theory is that Joe Biden wasn't playing with his dog, he kicked it.
According to Mystere (absent from blogging for almost a year now) George Bush senior and John McCain did not die due to old age/sickness, but were executed by lethal injection. After having been found guilty of treason via military tribunals set up by Dotard.
I tuned into NewsMax TV yesterday because I wanted to watch Dotard's "wonderful speech" which a text I received said NewsMax would be re-airing. I don't know why, but it wasn't on. I watched for awhile and the coverage ALL concerned how the election was stolen and that if Joe Biden becomes president it will represent a "socialist occupation" of the White House.
btw, I'm totally onboard with republicans sitting out the special election in GA. If they really think the election was stolen, they HAVE to protest by not participating in a rigged system :)
Even with dead people votes and double counting there is no way there are not enough questionable votes to change the results.
Hopefully GA will stay republican and we can survive two years of harris and obiden until both house and senate have GOP majorities.
Is basement joe going to attend his inauguration or is obama going to accept the presidency for him because joey's staff is obama's in waiting.
The GOP did what they do best, be nice and be run over. How the country allowed 30 million unsolicited ballots to be sent out to change the face of the country is amazing and disgraceful. People could not go to the polls but can go to the store and bars. The GOP rolled over and let it happen.

Try using facts instead of fiction fueled by Trump's lies and distortions:
PolitiFact (pre-election):
It’s not yet clear precisely how many voters will receive ballots without requesting them by mail, because voter registration is not yet closed for the Nov. 3 election. But based on our research, we found that Trump has exaggerated the number. He also omitted the fact that millions of voters have automatically received ballots in some states for many years without it leading to widespread fraud.
Some states are sending ballots to all voters
Millions more voters are expected to cast ballots by mail this year than in previous presidential elections.
Five states — Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, and Washington — have operated virtually all mail-in elections prior to 2020, some of them for many years. Voters are routinely mailed ballots in these states as part of the regular process.
The pandemic this year has raised concerns about large groups of voters gathering indoors, so some additional states — California, Nevada, New Jersey, Vermont plus Washington, D.C. — have decided to send ballots to all active voters.
In other states, voters have to take action to request a mail ballot, though some of them took that step already if they live in a state that allows a permanent absentee voting list that may be offered to all voters, or only to certain voters based on specific criteria such as age or disability.
We asked the Trump campaign to show how it arrived at 80 million unsolicited ballots, and whether that included a handful of states that have generally held all vote-by-mail elections for years. We did not receive a response.
Naturally, folks like "Blade runner" swallow whole rumors and lies from Trump and his lackeys.
It's the only way they and Trump can accept that Trump was rejected by the American people.
I don't expect "Blade" or "skud" to believe ANYTHING that challenges Trumpian rumors and lies, because, like Trump, neither one of those commenters can accept the fact that the American people rejected Trump and that, according to the courts, Trump's cyber head, and Trump's own AG, THERE WAS NO FRAUD!
People like "Blade" and "skud" will continue to spread lies about fraud because that's how they'll delegitimize President-elect Biden's presidency. These believe only Republicans, and now Trumpublicans, should be allowed to have the presidency.
It is people like "Blade" and "skud" and their allies who are weakening our American democracy because they refuse to accept truth and reality.
They, of course, don't see themselves as subversive actors, because they've shut off any information that disagrees with their conspiracy-laden minds, and anything that proves what a danger Trump was, is, and always will be to our democratic republic.
January 20th can't come soon enough.
Derv,
The Trumpublican Party has gone down the rabbit hole. There's no hope for them to ever leave their comfort zone of conspiracies, lies, and distortions.
I hate to say this, but it's the only thing that makes sense:
They're weak-minded, anti-science, anti-facts, anti-American democracy.
I never thought I'd live to see so many of my fellow Americans lose their minds over such an unworthy man like Trump.
Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh worked in concert back when Gingrich was House Speaker defining the brand of what their version of the conservative movement was and should be. The absolute rule of that conservative movement was that "we as Republicans play to win at all costs. Nothing else matters. Anyone who isn't one of us is our sworn enemy."
Today you can count on just two to three fingers the number of Republicans that aren't slavishly devoted to that Gingrich/Limbaugh conservative brand. That's where we're at now and that's why our Democracy is teetering to oblivion.

Biden is Screwed
Biden not only received a majority of the popular vote, but also cleared 51 percent — the largest vote percentage obtained against an incumbent president since 1932 and a bigger percentage of the popular vote than any Republican president since George H.W. Bush in 1988, when Bush was essentially running for a third Ronald Reagan term. In the process, Biden amassed the largest total number of ballots in U.S. history. He pummeled Trump by more than 7 million votes (and exceeded Barack Obama’s 2008 vote total by more than 11 million). That margin is bigger than Massachusetts’ entire population; in fact, only 14 states have a population of more than 7 million. Biden’s popular vote margin by percentage (4.4 percent) far surpasses Obama’s 2012 victory over Mitt Romney.
Why is it important to emphasize the magnitude of Biden’s victory? Because, far from narrow, it represents the overwhelming verdict of the voters. If there is such a thing as a mandate, Biden has one. He has been explicit about the things he intends to do: preserve and expand Obamacare, pass child-care and sick-leave legislation, pursue police reform, push through a massive infrastructure bill and tackle climate change. Skud... are you for real?
I'm always suspicious when copy and paste the exact comment at various blogs as you've done.
Come on man... bring some original content.
We don't want leftovers.
Mal, Nothing in the news about your claim. And you provided no evidence to back it up.
Smarter trolls, please.
Rev, Normally you are quite lucid but your post at 1155 is off the rails. You should be celebrating not making bitter comments about something that didn't happen. What are you talking about. I don't copy and paste on various blogs and my posts are original and I do not post as someone else or as anon.
It seems as the rethuglicans are the party falling in behind their lying conspiratorial boss The Great Orange Turd. Rethuglicans are now the Party of Personality and Corruption. Beginning the moment they hooked their wagon to the tRump train.
Rethuglicans ARE the party of tRump. They lost their claim as the Patty of Lincoln 12 years ago.
Party, not Patty.
