"Is anyone else dreading July 1, when Florida loosens its gun laws?

Anyone with good sense in Florida is dreading July 1. That’s the day when the State will allow anyone over the age of 21 to carry a concealed weapon WITHOUT a permit and WITHOUT any gun training — AT ALL."

Not a great idea by anyone with any sense. I am all for gun registration and training but I am also for voter ID to vote so I seem to be confused. I doubt if the new law will have any affect because the people who will use a gun for nefarious purposes already have one or can get one in every city including Chicago.

Hope those in the smoke zone are staying inside.

Florida is 3rd in the nation in mass shootings.

Of course it's also one of the most populated states in the country as well. Texas is second, California is first. All heavily populated states. New York comes in at 9th. Massachusetts, 29th.

Skud... I agree with you. A national gun registry, so the rules are the same everywhere, then federally mandated training to actually own a gun. And that training can be administered by the states.

Then, on voter ID, a federal standard. Either a voter card, issued by the feds to every voter upon registration, or a list of accepted forms of ID that states must accept. And within that, two stipulations...

1. Current in state student ID is acceptable. That way college students can vote in the state where they are currently living.

2. Any one over the age of 70, who has voted in 3 prior national elections, is exempt from strict ID requirements. This should handle old and poorer Americans who were just "born" to a family member, have lived in the same place for eons, and everyone there knows who they are.

Is it a deal?

Now, let's look at what i proposed above...

The GOP and conservatives want voter ID. The only way to make this happen in an equitable manner is with a national standard. And it's simple to make happen.

But the GOP and conservatives will oppose it as federal overreach. Because they want states to continue to have the ability to set their own voter standards, which we have seen in the past, lead to voter suppression. Here's a statement from conservative religious leader Paul Weyrich...

"I don't want everybody to vote... As a matter of fact, our [conservatives] leverage in elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down."

And while still president, Donald Trump said this about making it easier for Americans to vote... "you'd never have a Republican elected in this country again."

As Miguel Torres states in his book Decolonizing Christianity "Trump, like Weyrich before him, recognizes that those who have been demanding participation [in voting], regardless of how fair and just their entreaties sound, cannot be validified..."

In short, conservatives will oppose any federal voter ID system because they know it will eliminate the ability of states to deny the franchise to some, because that is the only way to ensure the continued election and reelection of staunch conservatives.

And we know for sure, no one in the GOP is going to support federal gun registration.

Rev, I'm not sure what you are doing but you agreed with me, careful. I do have one objection to what you said and that is to infer that 70 is old.

Dave Miller said...

70 is old?

Not really, but no new terms, cause 75 can be a disaster. And ya gotta draw the line somewhere.

I'm 71, 70's are old only if you're physically or mentally challenged. Hell, the Dalai Lama is 88 and remans sharp and lucid.

I believe folks with all their facilities in tact can serve as president into their early eighties.

However, i also realize many are not so lucky as the Dalai Lama or Archbishop Tutu was. So, an age limit for running for president should be 72 years of age. Than no one older than 80 would ever sit in the oval office.

I forgot to add that in addition we should add a provision that all office holders be required to undergo annual testing for cognitive ability if in office past the age of 72.

Leslie, Then Rev insulted you as well, kids these days. If you have to retire from flying at 65 why should you be able to run the country at 75. We need to elect a younger and better class of crooks.
