"For those people that want to protest, they're going to be met with very big force," Trump warned this week, dismissing the demonstrators as "people that hate our country."
Check your email for another No Kings graphic. Here in Las Vegas the rally/protest is today at about 6pm, when it will ony be about 105 degrees. I've got friends going in Los Angeles.
I'm with Les, hoping for rain on the mall today.
After the parade, is Congress going to appropriate the necessary funds to repair streets in DC damaged by the tanks and other military vehicles?
Is there an over/under betting line for the number of missile launchers we may see. a la most parades under dictators?
I know, I know the -FJs of the world will come and use the French Bastille Day celebrations as an example of a democracy doing the same. But it's a false comparison, the difference being this...
For the first time, at least in recent memory, we have a president who specifically calls our military leaders "my generals", implying the military and today specifically, the army, are his. They are not, in any sense of the word.
Every single general, admiral and military leader and soldier, are best described using the term "our". Because they are part of the collective United States of America. Our military belongs to all of us, is paid for by all of us and serves to protect all of us. President Trump, as our elected leader, is the civilian leader of those forces. He cannot order them to act in an unlawful manner, no matter what he thinks. They do not exist to accomplish his will, but rather again, the collective of all of us citizens of the USA.
Finally, the thought of a man who used a bone spurs excuse to avoid military service, while others signed up for or were drafted to serve, would now be the CinC is disgusting.
Dwight Eisenhower along with Ulysses S Grand and of course George Washington all served and achieved the rank of general. They led troops in battle, each one of them defeating armies amassed against the idea of a United States of America. All three of them could have rightly claimed to command "my generals", could have likely claimed powers traditionally set aside for kings.
And all three of them refused.
Today as tanks, weaponry and thousands of soldiers are paraded down Pennsylvania Ave in an attempt to assuage the ego of President Trump seeking his own Bastille Day type celebration, Ike, Grant and Washington will swell with pride for their love of our army, 250 years young today.
And they'll also turn over in their graves at Trump's continued bastardization of a revered US tradition of working to keep politics away from our military.
It's a cool 60 degrees here in Boston with a light mist which will turn to rain later in the day.
May the spirit of 1776 prevail today. We bow to no kings; we reject Donald J. Trump's vision of America, where he is king.
"When the government fears the people, there is liberty; when the people fear the government, there is tyranny."
That is incorrectly attributed to Thomas Jefferson, which may have come from this quote by him:
The quotation is vaguely similar to Jefferson's comment in an 1825 letter to William Short: "Some are whigs, liberals, democrats, call them what you please. Others are tories, serviles, aristocrats, &c. The latter fear the people, and wish to transfer all power to the higher classes of society; the former consider the people as the safest depository of power in the last resort; they cherish them therefore, and wish to leave in them all the powers to the exercise of which they are competent."
We're going to see quite a split screen today: Millions protesting peacefully in defense of democracy, and a would-be dictator ordering tanks to tear up DC streets to make him feel powerful. It's obvious what the right side is. Be on it.
In the Minneapolis suburbs, someone started started his own celebration by shooting state congressmen in their homes. He had a list - they were all Democrats. We are well on the way to becoming a 3rd world nation. Thanks, MAGA.
Fearful people, fearful of the ever changing continual flow of change and the increasing interconnectedness of human society, look to the deep fascist state of tRump to stand in the way of liberation and true freedom for ALL people.
As a native Minnesotan, prayers go up to the family of Minnesota Democrat Melissa Hortman and her husband who were assassinated in their home, along with the shooting of another Minnesota lawmaker and his wife.
Kim will be proud. What a waste of time and money. Should have used the money to give bonuses to the troops as a jester of thanks. The private in Guam doesn't really care about a parade. I do hope the protests are peaceful by normal not LA standards.
From WI next door, I lived and worked in MN for 11 years. You never forget Minnestota Nice! Had the odd experience of working at the Ammo Plant up by New Brighton, making munitions to support the troops, while sporting a Eugene McCarthy bumper sticker - he who ran to stop the nonsense and bring the troops home. Still have a 'Land of 10,000 lakes" license hanging in my Idaho grarage and son and famiily living up in St. Cloud. FoxNews had a guy on complaining that the killings of state legislators was from Gov Waltz calling ICE the Gestapo. Guess I'm in deep trouble, since I've thought and posted that for some months now.
Like authorities closing down access points so protestors are unable to leave the protest site? Like LA authorities holding those protestors in the makeshift corral until curfew and then arresting them all? Like that? Like the authorities opening fire on unarmed and nonviolent protestors who are holding their arms up above their heads to show they aren't armed? Like when authorities fired tear gas into a crowd without first issuing any instructions to disperse? Like authorities sending teams to the rooftops of garages and buildings in order to fire into the peaceful crowd?
I guess LA standards are pretty awful. Glad the protests elsewhere weren't like LA!!!
I saw peaceful protesters walking out with a TV and other goods in LA but didn't see the sign break window and take what you want. Gives you goose bumps in remembrance of george and his "peaceful protests". Grey, Guess that's OK with you.
skud proves their ignorance. Again. According to their own words they are fine with cops killing citizens in the streets by slow strangulation. They approve of violating the rules of due process. Why again do they claim the mantle of the "reasonable" American?
There were 71 MAGA instigators and agitators arrested on No Kings Day - people pretending to be protestors but who just wanted to do what skud so helpfully pointed out - loot and pillage to give the movement a bad name. 13 million of our fellow citizens marched on Saturday per the Alt Nat'l Park collective and skud gives us one or two supposed examples. OK skud. Guess you are bad at math too.
Ya want to know what I remember about the George Floyd protests? Early in the movement there was a memorial gathering. Yes, outside a police station as they were the ones who did the killing and didn't speak out against a 'lone' wolf officer. They lit candles, sang songs, brought their kids and then the cops got scared of all those Black faces and without warning fired tear gas into the crowd. Didn't call for the crowd to disperse, just escalated and tear gassed BABIES.
The crowd who destroyed that police station were lucky the Black community has as much restraint as they do. I've have burned down the town for having to see my kids in pain from tear gas in their eyes and lungs. But for skud that's just business as usual? Please tell me you aren't THAT monster skud. Please.

This part of the quote you cited... ""When the government fears the people, there is liberty is interesting.
Juxtapose it with what Mitt Romney and others are on record saying about GOP political leaders...
That they fear the violence of the MAGA mob if they cross or otherwise reject the policies of President Trump.
How do we reconcile this?

Thank tRump for the situation that developed in LA. Everything tRump touches turns to s**t.
