Virulently and Murderously Homophobic

A reader of this blog brought this statement, found on a rabid right wing blog, to my attention yesterday:

"Islam is virulently and murderously homophobic..."

Islam isn't the only religion that is virulently and murderously homophobic. The blogger who wrote that characterization about Islam chooses to ignore the fact that some fundamentalist Christians, like some Muslims, call for the murder and deaths of homosexuals.

The fundamentalists of the world's two major religions are very much alike in their hatred of gay people and in calling for their death:

,
Here is the evidence:

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A Sacramento Baptist preacher’s sermon praising attack on an Orlando nightclub that killed 50 people has the local LGBT community outraged.

Recordings of the sermon by Pastor Roger Jimenez surfaced under the Verity Baptist Church’s YouTube account.

“Are you sad that 50 pedophiles were killed today?” he said in the sermon. “Um no, I think that’s great! I think that helps society. I think Orlando, Florida is a little safer tonight.”

The remarks were delivered on Sunday morning, hours after the attack happened.

This Christian pastor wants to exterminate gays for an ‘Aids-free Christmas’

An American pastor has called for the mass extermination of all homosexuals and transgender people to bring about an ‘Aids-free Christmas’. Steven Anderson, who preaches in Tempe, Arizona, gave the sermon to a packed congregation at the Faithful Word Baptist Church on Sunday, with the video later uploaded to YouTube.

'Kill the Gays' Preacher Kevin Swanson: God's on His Side

Pastor Kevin Swanson is taking a victory lap after his headline-making National Religious Liberties Conference in Iowa earlier this month. After hosting Republican presidential candidates Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, and Bobby Jindal (who since left the race), the Colorado preacher who calls for gays who don’t repent to be sentenced to death went on radio to reflect on the “media firestorm” he created.

James Dobson: Kill Transgender People Using Public Bathrooms

Evangelist James Dobson says transgender people using public bathrooms should be shot. In an anti-Obama rant the Focus on the Family founder said that transgender people using public restrooms should be shot.

Rev. Franklin Graham: Gay Christians are ‘The Enemy’

“We have allowed the enemy to come into our churches. I was talking to some Christians and they were talking about how they invited these gay children to come into their home and to come into the church and that they were wanting to influence them.”

Tennessee Pastor Robert Gallaty Suggests Gays ‘Must Be Put To Death’ Or Remain Celibate

A conservative Tennessee pastor is making headlines after footage of a sermon in which he implied that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people should be put to death surfaced online. As Raw Story originally reported, Brainerd Baptist Church Senior Pastor Robby Gallaty justified Christian opposition to the LGBT community in his hour-long sermon, which was broadcast on Aug. 31.

“God said that the sins of the people had infected the very land in which they live,” Gallaty says in the clip. “So what happens to people who engage in this activity, this sexual immoral activity? Go to Leviticus 20, God gives us the punishment for engaging in these sins… They must be put to death. And their blood is on their own hands.’”

Not content to spread their virulent, murderous homophobia in America, the fundamentalist Christian right exports its death culture on the LGBT community to African countries:

US Christian Right Behind Anti-Gay Law Passed in Uganda

On Monday, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed into law a bill which toughens penalties against gays and defines some homosexual acts as crimes punishable by life in prison. The bill also proposed years in prison for anyone who counsels or reaches out to gays and lesbians.

I could link to more and more evidence, Google has hundreds of them.

Those statements by Christian fundamentalists calling for the murders and deaths of members of the LGBT community are no different from the fundamentalist Muslims who do the same.

Oh Shaw, those Christian Domionists are totes different!!!! They don't want to do the killing themselves. They want the government to do the killing.

Wish I could say my words are total snark but as a voyager through the sewers of theocratic ideology I've viewed that argument more than once.

Here's the thing. The Earth is a closed ecosystem. We are all living here together and it would be in our best interests if we could learn to tolerate each other before Mama Nature lets loose the effects of climate change.

Does anyone really believe the borders as they are defined today will mean anything when what was once verdent is turned to dust?

As always, I appreciate your battles with the unintelligent. Your patience and strength are an inspiration. Thank you

But Shaw, there is a difference... Most of this thought is considered extreme within the Christian community. I've never met a single pastor, and I know thousands, who would utter those words, or secretly hold those views.

These are men and women who, while not believing a gay lifestyle is a Christian lifestyle, would never advocate what these "leaders" are advocating. Never.

Do they support gay rights? Not a chance, but they would never kill over it. At least the ones I know. They would also not preach "death to gays" or advocate for exclusion from our country.

Within Islam there is a very virulent branch that not only does preach and advocate for these beliefs, they call for laws (sharia) to make it happen.

We still see stonings and honor killings within Islamic societies. These are not just here and there occurences... They are everyday happenings in many Muslim areas.

Does Christianity have their problem people? Yes, of course. But does it equate with Islam? At least IMO, and because of my experiences, I have to say it does not.

I didn't put up this post to show an equivalency between Islam and Christianity, but to show that extremist views in Christianity are no different from how Islam treats the LGBT community.

I also think people would argue that Franklin Graham is hardly "extremist," though. Isn't he considered pretty mainstream Christian?

Connie, thank you for your comment and kind words.

Dave, I forgot to mention that anti-gay laws still on the books in several states. (This report is from 2014, and some of these laws may no longer be in effect):

Alabama
In Alabama, state law dictates that homosexuality is not an acceptable lifestyle:

An emphasis, in a factual manner and from a public health perspective, that homosexuality is not a lifestyle acceptable to the general public and that homosexual conduct is a criminal offense under the laws of the state.

Texas
Even though it was Texas’s sodomy law that the Supreme Court struck down over 10 years ago, that law is still part of the state’s sex education policy:
(b) The materials in the education programs intended for persons younger than 18 years of age must:
(1) emphasize sexual abstinence before marriage and fidelity in marriage as the expected standard in terms of public health and the most effective ways to prevent HIV infection, sexually transmitted diseases, and unwanted pregnancies; and
(2) state that homosexual conduct is not an acceptable lifestyle and is a criminal offense under Section 21.06, Penal Code.

Thank you for your comment Dave. You put the issue of this post article in proper perspective IMO.

It is difficult to understand extreme religous views that encourage and result in hatred of fellow humans, regardless of the specific religious faith.

Dave: The main reason for the difference is that the West is so secularized that most Christians even in the US are hardly Christian in a sense people a century or two ago would recognize. Most could not even list the Ten Commandments from memory or give a coherent description of the teachings of Jesus, aside from a few clichés which have become part of popular culture. Among the minority who really are fervent believers (fundamentalists), the attitudes which Shaw's links describe are much more common, and lesser but still virulent forms of anti-gay bigotry are almost universal. A few centuries ago, when Christians really believed in their religion the way modern jihadists believe in theirs, governments did indeed execute homosexuals (and witches, etc.) according to Bible-based law. And homosexuality was forbidden by law in 13 US states as recently as 2003.

The Islamic world is at an earlier stage in this process of secularization than the Christian world is (allowing for the fact that there are huge differences among different Islamic societies, as there are between Christian societies -- Pakistan and Tunisia are very different, as Alabama and Germany are different). It's this, not differences between the religions themselves, that mainly accounts for the different levels of religious bigotry and hatred.

Finally, the attitudes of a lot of Middle Eastern people are different from how Americans imagine them (here's an example). A reflexive "yeah, of course homosexuality is a sin" from someone who has never given the issue much thought and doesn't have strong feelings about it one way or the other, may well be almost as common a reaction among Iranian Muslims as among American Christians.

Dear AvpR,

I let this comment through so my readers could see how the sick and hateful have taken over a once great American political party.

What you call "a cancer" is what made America great. You're just too blinded by ideology and ignorance to understand that fact.

Now go put on your "Make America Great Again" hat and cheer for the thin-skinned bigoted bully that now represents you and your Republican Party.

Wrong. I have no obligation to post comments that are incoherent, insulting and that attack me or other commenters. Calling Liberals a "cancer" is vicious -- that's an attack on me. You appear to be an unhappy, confused person who admits disliking people like me, but comes to my blog anyway.

Get help.

Shaw, "A proud Republican who can't stand people like you" is the "Anita Says It Right" sock puppet from the Daddy blog.

It's not a very bright sock puppet either. Kinda addle-brained like all the Daddy fanboys.

Right Wing Religious zealots are the same across religions. And they are very good at picking parts of their holy works that they care about in order to show that they are right and others deserve to be punished.

If you want to hate, and your role model (for instance Jesus Christ), is a liberal wingnut - that doesn't matter. There are other parts of the Holy works that can be picked and chosen to support your need to hate.

Howard, I refer to those people as "Cafeteria Religionists." They pick and choose the parts of their holy books that match their prejudices.
