A lot of speculation and disinformation on why Spirit Airlines went out of business placed the blame on the Biden administration and former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Massachusetts US Senator Elizabeth Warren.
Here's one example, but there were many posted in the MAGA universe:
"David, You mentioned US investment in Spirit airlines which turns out to be incorrect. The esteemed business persons Peter Buttigieg was active in denying the merger of Jet Blue and Spirit as was the brilliant Elizabeth Warren. Both said approving the merger would result in less competition. Looks like they were wrong because now there are thousands unemployed and thousands stuck in places where they don't want to be.
This is only one of the problems we face when we let incompetent bureaucrats led by an incompetent leader make decisions. Give them their bribes and perks as long as they don't try to do anything. We would all be better off. We should even fund day cares that don't exist just to keep the idiots away from decisions that affect us all."
In bankruptcy court, Spirit Airlines' own lawyers blamed Trump's Iran War, and never mentioned the Biden administration nor Buttigieg or Warren. Trump's mouthpieces were the first to blame the Biden administration because they never take responsibility for their actions.
It was Trump's disastrous Iran War that forced Spirit Airlines into bankruptcy.
The Filing: Court documents cite that the conflict in Iran caused high fuel prices that crushed the company’s margins and left no viable path to restructuring.

Facts and truth matter not to the cult of trump. Disinformation, misinformation, and out right lies are the norm for trump and his cabal of fascists.
We are fully experiencing, right now in real time, the fully blossomed effects of an authoritarian fascist regime. Supported by a fascist scotus.
It will be up to American's who actually value truth (reality), integrity, and the rule of law to change trump's, Project 2025, and the Republican's (now trumpublican's) misguided and incompetent governance.
It won't be easy as the institutions of our democratic republic have already been seriously weakened.
Personally, I'm not sure we survive the fascist onslaught on our nation. Dave is right. Both democrat and republican presidents and politicians have made crucial mistakes. Both related to competency and character. However, IMO you attack the most egregiously incompetent, dishonest, abd destructive to the National Welfare first. And right now that is the republican (trumpublican) party and Project 2025.
Also, the corrupt scotus should have term limits established for justices. Staggered as in the senate. I know there is a move to do that which proposes an 18 year term. My view? It should be limited to 12.
The founders got a lot right. They also made mistakes. The greatest being the Electoral College to determine presidential elections. Of course they had no way of knowing how corrupt the system they established would eventually become.
The trumo regime and the trump court really shines a glaring spotlight on just how corrupt America has become.
2026 and 2028 will likely be the last chances to correct the badly listing ship of state. If democrats, progressives, and socialists fail to gain control of the house and senate in 2026 and retain control in 2028 it's likely our children and grand children will live under authoritarian tyranny.
I've no specifics as to what the kids are up to (a crew comprised of mostly girls as too many boys are lost in the Male loneliness epidemic) as they know I can't keep a secret to save my life. I can do private or classified but the word secret is so loaded that it just feels to heavy so I spill the beans, every time. I keep trying to peek but everything is classified so no tea here, darn it.
That said I've been listening to Lydia the Bard and her song Feed Us Your Girls. The artwork her fans created to illustrate the song brings tears to my eyes and an ache to my soul. So many women, so much SA but what does this have to do with the topic at hand?
Well, the death of Spirit is entirely on the Trump admin and yet there are content creators out here blaming everyone except those responsible. Spirit couldn't have merged with Jet Blu back in the day for the reasons already detailed in the post - but to remind folks, at the time the merger would have significantly reduced competition and although the GOP's "usual suspects" voiced this fact it was a judge who had the final authority and they said no. Cue the GOP freak out who lashed out just like the wolves in Lydia the Bard's song.
Slightly OT but have you watched recent footage from the concerts of Paris Paloma? Her song Labour hit a note and it is resonating because her audiences of mostly women are signing the song back to her and the energy is powerful. I guess there are finally enough humans tired of doing four times the work which achieving six times the goals only to be paid three fourths of what the nepo good-ole boy network employee makes.
The kids aren't looking to fix because it's already broken. To a person they express the desire to finish kicking it all down so they can rebuild only for everyone this time. And get this, many of the ideas our wise minds here at PE have presented in the comments are echoed by the kids. It's almost as if we are ahead of the curve. I'm delighted. Total joy!
Shaw... At the time the merger was blocked, Jet Blue CEO Joanna Geraghty stated it was better to move forward independently without Spirit and without the merger.
She also said JetBlue this month that had the merger with Spirit Airlines been completed, the combined company would likely be facing bankruptcy today.
But I'm sure Skud and the FOX News shows he was quoting know more than the CEO of Jet Blue about what happened.
Ms. Shaw, You are saying an airline that has been losing money for years and tried to merge with another airline to stay in business shut down because their fuel costs rose in three weeks. They should teach that in harvaard business school. Take a bad business model and after you shut down, it was not the management's fault.
Buttigieg said his department normally doesn't get involved in business matters but would in this case because of competition. They did not shut down because of warren, buttigieg or biden and the rise in fuel costs was the straw the finally caused their demise. It was a bad business model conducted by an ineffective management team. When your only offering in low price and you keep your price low by keeping your costs low anything can disrupt this. If you ever flew Spirit you would realize they were a company doomed to fail. Horrible service at a low price is not a winning combination when prices rise.
If rising fuel price in the last few weeks is the reason they shut down how did they manage 2021 when fuel costs rose to unprecedented levels.
The war with iran is stupid and trumps wishy washy plan shows no plan at all. Lets give iran another 10 days or 20 days then we will blow them off the map. sh-t or get off the pot and don't threaten unless you are going to follow through. Trump is well known to make bold statements followed up by a weak response. He hasn't said if you cross this red line there will be consequences but he is showing the same weak leadership skills.
skud: "Ms. Shaw, You are saying an airline that has been losing money for years and tried to merge with another airline to stay in business shut down because their fuel costs rose in three weeks."
I did not SAY that. The lawyers for Spirit Airlines said it. I just posted the facts. If you read Dave Millers' comment above, you will also learn that the CEO of JetBlue stated that had that merger happened, Jet Blue would be facing bankruptcy as well. The Reagan appointed judge in the merger case said it was illegal, the CEO of Jet Blue said it would have been a disaster for Jet Blue, and the lawyers for Spirit Airlines blamed Trump's Iran War for the final bankruptcy.
Yet, with all this evidence available on line, your original post blamed former Transportation Secretary, Buttigieg and Senator Warren, you DID NOT blame Spirit Airline's management in your original comment in the previous post and thread in the comments:
skud: "The esteemed business persons Peter Buttigieg was active in denying the merger of Jet Blue and Spirit as was the brilliant Elizabeth Warren. Both said approving the merger would result in less competition. Looks like they were wrong because now there are thousands unemployed and thousands stuck in places where they don't want to be.
This is only one of the problems we face when we let incompetent bureaucrats led by an incompetent leader make decisions."
It turns out that the transportation secretary and senator from Massachusetts were correct.
Shaw... as usual, Skud knows more about an issue than even the people involved. For instance, during the 2021 price run up, many airlines bought and stockpiled millions of gallons of fuel at pandemic prices. This savvy business move enabled them to ride out the then predictable post pandemic inflation.
I mean seriously, this IS the issue. People like Skud and the sailors on the Mothership believe they know more than, and actually abhor the experts.
Maybe here and there they do, on some things. But mostly? No! Most people do not know more than the "experts".
As for Skud saying "you are saying"... welcome to the club. Skud regularly mischaracterizes what ppl here actually say so it fits his understanding. Because he does not take care with his words, much like Trump.
I'm sure skuds apology is waiting for comment approval, yes?
And I do have to question skuds ability to read for comprehension as they repeatedly attribute words to others they did not say. Is that specifically a MAGA thing or is there a diagnosis in skud's history somewhere to explain it all? Because once is an oops. Twice is ok, I was careless. The third through the umpteenth time is a habit, one commentators besides myself here have called out and yet, skud persists.
Whatever the reason it's not a good look.
Oh my friends, been reading the goings on around the interwebz. Not going to lie, I'm a bit worried but still have that unsubstantiated feeling of optimism that things are going to work out OK. Not a shred of logic, only my gut which if I'm honest is more accurate than my logic ever has been, so there is that.
David, This is a copy of what was posted "It was Trump's disastrous Iran War that forced Spirit Airlines into bankruptcy." Turns out it was a bad business plan and poor management. Government should keep out of private business because our elected elite can't manage the government that has all the money they can seize so we shouldn't expect them to manage a for profit business.
We can't expect a small town mayor understand the airline business. His claim to fame is he got a position as part of a deal to drop out of the race with biden not because he had any qualifications, oh in case you want to know this applies to both parties and trump's selections are based on loyalty not qualifications.
I mean seriously, we should have government appointees who know what they are in charge of and not as a political favor.
Airlines don't stockpile fuel, they have no where to stockpile it. They may trade futures which a couple of carriers did.
Now Ms. Shaw how were the transportation sec and the senator correct because there is now less competition than before.
Not one shred of evidence in skuds reply.
LOL Shaw's post for Friday is very on topic, just saying.
skud asks how Sen Warren and Transportation Sec Pete were correct back then using information we only know for a fact here/now. Oh I'd say make it make sense but this is skud and they are a Trumpian loyalist even though they say they aren't but the stink of Trump surrounds every comment like this one where he demands prophecy from the Democratic party and no accountability for the GOP.
skud, you've said NOTHING about Trump's part in this whole mess. Not one word against your... I don't know what he is to you - guilty pleasure? No condemnation for Venezuela, no harsh words for the war in Iran, nope, just lots of finger pointing at the Democratic Party just like every abuser I've ever encountered. Again, you are projecting "look at what you made me do!" energy.
I called you out over that tendency before but the post went dormant and I'm not about to practice necromancy in another persons home. But this is now and I will continue to call you out for this specific bad behavior because you hollered at me back then like someone who felt my comment a little too closely.
Do better skud. Get therapy if that helps because your comments reveal more about you than you think.
True or not it is true because I want to believe it so. Right skud?
Funny thing about reified beliefs and cults. They go hand in hand.
Skud... Mayor Pete has not been Sec Transportation for 16 months now. Yet over multiple blogs you've targeted him for your disgust. No one is dead because of his actions. No one is paying extreme gas prices because of him. No one is paying higher prices at the market because of him. No one is losing health care because of him and government is not taking ownership positions in US companies because of him.
Yet you've used more words to show your contempt of him then you've ever managed to put together to show any contempt for the ppl that have brought all of the above.
No one mentioned him in a post or a comment. No one.
Why no specific contempt, disgust and snarky nick names for the ppl on Trump's team and the GOP who have brought all of the above to America sicne Jan 2025?
I've wondered why you have such contempt for Pete. I'm sure Possum isn't wondering, because folks have seen this before. I'll just say it... you hold him in contempt, at least, IMHO, because he's gay, dares to be open about it, married a guy and adopted a kid.
You don't think he should have used FMLA to bond with his adopted child, a right all Americans have and all pro life ppl should celebrate. Yet you criticized him.
I'll await your criticism of and contempt for Press Sec Leavitt now that she is on FMLA herself.
As for Spirit, I will bow to your superior intellect. You are right in all of you thoughts on why they are out of business, and industry leaders, the Spirit CEO and others are all wrong or lying.
Thanks for setting us straight.
