I watched the clips of Gym Jordon as he was faced with the news his star witness (again) lied (again). He was doubling down, his face set, almost as if he lost control of one atom of his being he'd fly off into a bamzillion pieces. For such a sorry excuse of a human it was justice at its' finest.

"Republican Ken Buck (R-CO) confirmed to CNN that House Republicans’ claim that President Biden and his son, Hunter, received millions of dollars from a Ukrainian energy company during Biden’s time as vice president, came from an unverified FBI source who was arrested last week for lying to the agency and is suspected of peddling Russian misinformation.
Buck told CNN, ‘We were warned at the time that we received the document outlining this witness’s testimony … We were warned that the credibility of this statement was not known.’ Buck went on to say that despite this warning from the FBI, House Republicans went on to trumpet the information everywhere, even going as far as to make it central in their impeachment proceedings against Biden.
Alexander Smirnov told the FBI in June 2020 that then-Vice President Biden and his son had been given up to $10 million from Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company that counted Hunter Biden as a board member. According to reports, the FBI fought House Republicans on making the information public.
Smirnov had been an FBI informant since 2010 because of his ties to corrupt foreign businesses and government officials. It was around 2020 that the FBI began to suspect some of his information was bogus as they were unable to corroborate a growing number of his statements. It was also around this time that news of a concerted Russian effort to discredit President Biden came to light.
In 2023, Smirnov reported more than a dozen meetings or conversations with Russian officials, which were revealed in court documents involving his arrest for lying to the FBI. In September 2023, the FBI interviewed him again regarding the claims he had made over the years about the Bidens. Prosecutors in his case allege that he repeated previous false claims and also pushed new false narratives, which they suspect came from his meetings with Russian officials.
Smirnov has not yet entered a plea in his case. Buck also admitted to CNN that the news ‘really undercut the nature of the charges.’

OT but adjacent to the subject at hand, I've been reading Marcy Wheeler at emptywheel. She has an amazing breakdown of the Hunter Biden case and oh my stars and garters... charts are needed. And color coding because it's a maze of who knew what when, why weren't warrants obtained, and why exactly did a troubled man who actually paid his back taxes get charged for the crime of nonpayment and why did the IRS agents in charge lie?
All the posts are good reads if a bit complicated due to the legalese. She translates well but still, some stuff defies translation. One thing is clear to me though (as someone who sees both the larger picture and patterns in the chaos) all these events are too complicated for our regular GOP actors. For a plan this elaborate it requires Russians. They have a finesse we Americans do not (well, they've been dancing this dance before we were a gleam in Washington's eye).
By the way, does anyone else remember the contingent of GOP congress critters who trucked themselves over to Russia over a July 4th holiday back in the day? I'm thinking they weren't there to sightsee. Of course the 'official' reason was to 'warn' Russia against meddling in the 2018 election. Yes, of course.
The movie about this timeline is going to be a blockbuster. English versions will be tense and drama filled. American versions will be filled with car chases and explosions (even though the only explosions are metaphorical). It will make lots of coin at the box offices around the globe.
I truly hope the finding out part of the GOP plan to turn the USA into a theocracy comes sooner rather than later.
Also - the leaders of the Biden impeachment crusade knew the 1023 form for their informant wasn't credible. From what I've heard and read the whole point of the 1023 is to log the info so it can be vetted, not that it has been vetted. A distinction I'm sure both Comer and Jordon knew about and they ran with it anyway. What does Putin have on these gents? Must be juicy!
