If the GOP Congress wasn't so feckless, they would demand a letter of understanding from the POTUS on this. And when Trump stiffs them, they would move to impeach and hold him in contempt of Congress as they've done with the Clinton's.
A POTUS who is either functionally Constitutionally illiterate, or chooses to use our founding document as part of his efforts to own the libs, is unfit for the office of the Presidency.
Because they would surely do that if Obama or Biden were in office and proposed multiple times in public ignoring the Constitution. As they should.
I recall when republicans had at least a degree of integrity. Back when they advised Nixon he had lost their support and backing during Watergate. So Nixon, who had retained a modicum of decency resigned.
Neither the party or Trump at this moment has either (much) integrity or decency IMO.
There's NO limit to what Republicans will tolerate or embrace from Trump. Sex offender? No problem. Giving secrets to Russians in the Oval Office? No problem. Siding with Putin over his DNI on Russian interference? No problem. Accepting the Big Lie about a "rigged election"? No problem. Inciting mob violence to overturn an election? No problem. Praising and pardoning thugs for beating cops bloody in a coup? No problem. Unaccountable secret police murdering Americans? No problem. Ordering the FBI to indict innocent people he hates? No problem.
Republican fealty will allow Trump to cancel elections, appoint only Republicans to Congress, impose martial law, imprison Democrats, and declare himself Supreme Leader for Life.
We've seen this movie before. Americans are no different from Germans in 1934.
