For the record, Dems favor voter ID - a national ID every citizen receives when they come of age and register to vote. It costs them nothing and everyone in the country receives it. Right now the GOP plan places a poll tax to vote which is unconstitutional.

You do have to prove you are a citizen which the vast majority of citens can do with no issue. The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 explicitly prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections. So why do democrats oppose voter registration. In the SAVE Act is a provision which states a drivers license is no longer the only ID needed for a citizen to vote. They must have a passport (expensive to obtain and the current admin is quietly shutting down in person offices where one can obtain a passport all around the country) or a certified birth certificate which is not reachable for many rural citizens aka those birthed at home. But that's not the insidious part.
If the SAVE Act is passed if a citizens last name on their ID doesn't match the last name on their birth certificate they are ineligible to vote. That's two forms of ID that must match and for many married women those two forms of ID don't match. Already there are videos on social media from women warning the rest of us of the hoops they had to jump through to get re-registered to vote. That extra burden to prove you are who you are is a poll tax skud. Not named as such but the White Supremacists were always clever in masking their attempts to subvert the vote with people they didn't like,

Acceptable forms of identity are no longer just a drivers license, one must have their birth certificate and if your last name doesn't match the birth certificate (looking at you married women and if you are divorced, extra hurdles for you sweetie!) then there are additional hurdles to face in order to qualify to vote. Those burdens, the extra documentation, the passport and birth certificates are not always easy to obtain which I said before and you ignored me. Per the constitution these extra hurdles are considered a poll tax. I never said they were in effect here/now only that the passing of the SAVE Act by the Senate will enact them.
