"Moral rot" is too good a term for what has infected the current Republican Party. I never in my life would have believed its leader would mollycoddle a groomer and rapist of children. But here we are.

Recently I sent an article from The Bulwark to a friend. It wasn't about Trump at all. It was an article on the decline of religion in America, which many scholars and data nerds have documented. The article was written by a Professor at Ohio State U.
My friend had nothing to say about the article. Instead, he dismissed it as out of hand because it was featured on a site where the "avowed lesbian Sarah Longwell" is the editor.
Just let that sink in.
The views and policy positions of The Bulwark are suspect because Longwell is a lesbian. Apparently that is some sort of character defect in his mind.
But the views and policy positions of a man guilty of sexual assault and fraud, a man who cheated on numerous wives, a man who instead of taking responsibility for his business failings, dumped on his debts through bankruptcy, a man who publicly bragged about grabbing women in the pussy, a man who...
Well we could go and on... the point being, my friend has no issues with the character and immorality of Donald Trump. He and his religion have no issues with the character or policies of Donald Trump but he dismisses the "avowed lesbian" and all her views. He believes Trump can be trusted... apparently because despite all his widely known moral failings, he's at least a heterosexual.
And yet Longwell, whom you quoted, cannot be trusted because her character is suspect due to her lesbianism.
And millions upon millions of ppl agree with my friend.
That's the larger problem.

Your friend who dismissed Longwell because of her private preferences seems to be morally confused and in need of some serious self-reflection on what morality actually is.
