Massachusetts Tops US in Study of Children’s Well-Being

Well done, Massachusetts.

But there's still lots of work to be done.

Young people have a better chance to thrive in Massachusetts than in any other state, according to a national analysis of children’s overall well-being.

Nearly all children in the state, 99 percent, have health insurance. Reading and math proficiency rates exceed the national average.

About 1 in 7 children live in poverty, compared with about 1 in 5 nationwide, according to the 25th annual Annie E. Casey Foundation “ Kids Count” report, released Tuesday.

Several other New England states fared well in the rankings. Vermont placed second, with New Hampshire and Connecticut also in the top 10.

Mississippi placed last.

That is a wonderful honor,

This is a great reason for the governors in the elite NE states to open their doors to as many illegals as want to come.

After all, you don't want these unfortunate individuals corrupted by being forced to live in the south.

Elite? If being better is being elite, I guess you are right, skud. I would certainly perfer living in New England than living in Mississippi. Does that make me an elitist too.

skud, apparently you are uninformed about why Gov. Patrick is working with the feds to give the refugee children temporary sanctuary. They'll be here for a limited time until they are properly processed.

Second, your snarky reference to NE governors as "elite" only reveals that you are more than a bit jealous of the accomplishments the liberal Northeast states have achieved.

I always acknowledge that we in Massachusetts can and must do better. We're not by any means perfect. But our state, along with other states in New England always come within the top 10 or 5 states on quality of life issues:

education
health care/insurance
standard of living

And when I point out that the solid red states, under conservative leadership, always come out at the bottom, the reaction to this is also consistent. Conservatives claim I'm bashing the south and then attack me for posting the inconvenient fact that many conservative policies fail the citizens in their states.

See Kansas and Gov. Brownback.

J.C. anything any liberal says about the success of liberal policies is a signal for those who dislike us to become indignant and haughty while trying to find a way to denigrate the good news.

I understand why this is. Many NOT ALL conservatives are invested in their ideology, and when they see ideological policies fail time after time, their fall back reaction is to call liberals "elite," "out of touch," "commies," "America haters," "tax and spend," etc. This allows them to ignore the failures of many conservative policies and to pretend we liberals are the ones who are "destroying America."

I am very happy that Massachusetts is seen as the best state in America for children's well being.

I hope the bottom state, Mississippi, does better in the future, because, y'know, "children are our..."

yeah, the wingnuts call liberals commies and America haters, but the liberal states do better in terms of quality of life than the conservative red states. The red states are always the bottom of the barrel when it comes to health care, education, and economic opportunities. Also they have high out of wedlock teen births. strange for Bible thumpers. They're anti-science and don't believe in evolution? No wonder they come in last in anything to do with learning. But they love their stupids: Nugent, Palin, and Aiken.

Dwight Eisenhower, Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan would not be welcome in today's GOP.

Sen. Joeseph McCarthy would.

Eisenhower, Goldwater, Nixon, Ford, and Reagan would be blue dog Democrats, if not moderate Democrats, today.
