Best to shut the country down for all of 2020 because life should not be about taking chances and acting responsibly.

Skud... no one, and let me say it slowly... No............ One.................... is advocating that. What we'd like to see is a plan that balances both sides of this equation. A need to keep people as safe as possible, and a need to restart the economy. Many conservative think tanks have done some work in this area, and some of their ideas are not too bad. Just like many liberal think tanks.

The Trump Admin has done a little work in this area, and has guidelines for opening the economy, or, if you prefer, restarting the economy, on their White House site. Here's their guidance... https://www.whitehouse.gov/openingamerica/

Is it too much to ask the White House to promote their own guidelines? If they are not going to do so, fine. Then why publish them. Show us a plan. A balanced plan.

I'll give you and the rest of chattering masses a clue on this... if the idea is binary, or either/or, it's stupid, not serious and infantile. Period.

Skud your snark in the face of this SERIOUS PANDEMIC and the ACTUAL REALITY that if not handled properly could result in well over 250,000 deaths in less than a year from this last February makes me question your logic. NOBADY is suggesting to do that. Not ONE person has said that on news nor have I read it anywhere. The snark is what one expects from trumptards.

Skud... speaking of plans, here's how Ezra Klein of VOX put it today...

"There are, at this point, a slew of reopening plans from think tanks and academics, economists and epidemiologists, liberals and conservatives. They differ in important, controversial ways. There are proposals that go all-in on mass testing. There are others that imagine a vast architecture of digital surveillance. Some rely on states; others emphasize the federal role. And within the plans, details worth debating abound: What level of risk is acceptable? How should recommendations vary between dense cities and rural areas? Who counts as an essential worker? How do we prevent mass unemployment? What is technologically possible?

The Trump administration could have chosen any of these plans or produced its own. But it didn’t. The closest it has come is a set of guidelines for states to consult when reopening. You can read them yourself at the White House’s “Opening America” landing page. The guidelines are not quite a plan, but they are at least a framework: They call for states to reopen when caseloads have fallen for 14 days, when hospitals can test all health care workers continually, when contact tracing architecture is up and running.

President Trump, however, shows neither familiarity with nor support for his own guidelines. He routinely calls on states to reopen though they have not met the criteria his administration suggests. For instance, his series of tweets calling on right-wing protesters to “LIBERATE!” Michigan, Virginia, and Minnesota from stay-at-home orders contradicted his administration’s guidance and created a distraction for state officials trying to manage a crisis."

You can go to VOX and follow the live links there to a multitude of plans... not one from the Trump Admin. Why is that so?

Maybe because as you said... Trump is the most corrupt president we've ever had.

Dervish Sanders said...

The shutdown was to buy time for the Dotard administration to ramp up testing (after all the time they wasted ignoring it for over 4 months). In order to reopen safely (or more safely) we need a lot more testing and contact tracing. But the Dotard administration has refused to do this. It's almost as if they (still) think they can wish this problem away. That, or they want Americans to die. Dumbest president ever!

Dave Miller said...

Honorable... you opined "The shutdown was to buy time for the Dotard administration to ramp up testing"

No it wasn't. Not at all.

The shutdown was what the Trump Admin could do to shut up the science ppl and buy the admin time to think up a strategy to avoid responsibility and blame for their incompetence in the middle of this pandemic.

So... as you pointed out, the Admin took none of the actions you felt they should, but sadly, that was not ever their objective.

Rev and RN, Did you read the title of Shaw's "Trump wants the country to open up as Covid-19 deaths increase". The only way to protect everyone is to shut the country down.

The federal government is not the end all as you believe. They are a massive cluster that can screw up anything. They send money to the dead, they can't get a healthcare website to work and to think they can handle something that has never happened in our lifetime is laughable.

I support states rights to control going back to living. Wyoming is a little different than New York so why treat them the same. That was a silly question because the government knows best for everyone.

I know personal responsibility is not in your vocabulary but that is what it is going to take. If you feel uncomfortable going out to eat than eat at home. Like other viruses covid will not go away, Ever. It will mutate into covid-21 or some other form. I know you think trump didn't act quickly enough and he should have shut the country down in November but as the next president said "he is a racist for blocking entry from china". It would have been a sh-t storm if he acted sooner. Should he have stayed out of it and let the experts handle it, yes but that is not his style and he would have been attacked for not getting involved. We will see how the first female president handles a crisis except she will have the media on her side.

Now Dotard has decided to take aim at Dr. Fauci over his statemnt on the dangers of opening and resuming public schools. Dotard is the dumbest, most ignorant and dangerous presnit EVER without a doubt!

Dave Miller said...

Well Skud, states rights are wonderful if ppl never leave their state. Maybe I don't want ppl from Georgia who think the virus is the flu and not a problem coming to my state and infecting me.

Then what do I do?

BB-Idaho said...

"The federal government is not the end all as you believe. They are a massive cluster that can screw up anything." Most of the massive screw up clusters are in
the private sector, having my cars recalled for various safety reasons, orders
screwed up in restaurants and internet. One provides service and has the constitution as a mission statement. Others goal is to make a profit: their mission
statements in my long experience in the private sector, change frequently. At one
time they began with the customer and the employees, now the shareholder and profits top their mission list (thank you Harvard Business school). Consider Covid
virus research. With CDC and NIH being gutted, the private pharmaceutical sector
is eagerly scrambling. Typically, the big boys will search the world, find some promising little lab, buy their work and ideas and look to fabulous profits.
We recall that Alex Azar, Trump's choice for Health & Human services is not a doctor, he is a lawyer. As such, he was CEO of bigPharm Eli Lilly, during which time most of their drug prices were raised substantially and their pricing on
insulin tripled. So the ineptitude described by Mr. Skud is not confined to governments at various levels, and if he prefers to have Eli Lilly efficiently
run the nation's health organizations, he will not only get the same results as
guvByTrump, but he is going to pay a whole lot more.

skudrunner said...

Rev, You have the right to live in the state of your choice. You don't agree with the opinions of people who live in GA don't move there. You want multiple wives move to utah, if you like prostitution move to Nevada. You want to pay massive taxes move to WI, NY, CA. See with states rights you can live in the state you want like precautions with the virus. If you don't feel comfortable in a situation stay out of that situation. I did see a group in WI in a bar shoulder to shoulder drinking. They appeared to be mid twenties, no masks and taking their chances, their choice. That wouldn't work for me, my choice.

BB, I don't know if it is the thin air in idaho but that was a incomprehensible ramble. So the government is inept which I agree with but business is inept as well. I know Profit BAAAD, government GOOOD. What was the last useful item developed by the federal government.

RN, You need to add dumbest So Far because it does change.

trump’s idea of governing:

Rinse and repeat...

Shaw Kenawe said...

Jeebus skud, you walked into that one.

Ever hear of NASA and the space program and all the innovative things that came from that?

BB- Idaho did not say business and profits are bad, he made a valid point by pointing out that the private sector is not blameless when it comes to screwing up. His examples were spot on.

You are a negative person constantly finding fault with anything that isn’t Trumpian. Trump and his cultists have been the worst thing to happen to America.

skudrunner said...

Unknown, not sure where you are from but in my family we discourage putting your foot on the table.

PL, Thanks for your explanation of Politician especially career Politician. Promise anything to keep your very lucrative and powerful position because they have no other skills and a salary for life.

Ms. Shaw, NASA didn't build anything. They said here is what we want to do now build it. I will admit that the government was behind the development of the atom bomb so you got me there.

Never said the private sector was blameless. They are the ones who moved manufacturing to china for profits after the labor unions and government taxes and regulations made it impossible to make things in the US. It was the federal government who encouraged them to move manufacturing off shore so I guess they both were to blame.

Negative I'm not I just don't buy into the government should run my life idea.

Dave Miller said...

Yeah Skud... you can live where people pass racist laws too. Like the ones that made marriages like mine for decades.

But in this country, we fought a war to tell the states rights ppl that the feds can shove it down your throat if you don't like it. And, quoting AG Bill Barr, the winners write the history, and those are us northerners. We did not think your backwards we can do what we want in our state, think slavery, vote stealing, etc., was good for our Union. So we demolished the south. The South lost.

Sadly, we've allowed you clowns back in the game. Thus, voter fraud, civil rights abuses and more in the old south. Including the flag of the defeated traitors who wanted to destroy the Union, the United States.

Take your states rights, formed in the crucible of racism, and shove it.

It was wrong then, it's wrong now. Unless you're a racist I don't care about my fellow man kind of guy.

skudrunner said...

Rev, Quite a rant and seems to be a little hostile for you. If you will recall it was democrats who committed those indiscretions decades ago. It was democrats who were the leaders on Jim Crowe so you are slinging arrows at you own party. Voter fraud can be lessened with voter ID required but some states and cities would not benefit from it. Think Chicago which has a policy of vote early vote often. Why is the democrat party so against voter ID. The it is racist idea is BS because everyone can get an ID. It is about manipulating the vote. Now they want to do away with the electoral college because it give voice to smaller states who sometimes are republican. Racism and civil rights abuses are not just in the South.

Progressives fear states rights as they should because the federal mandate of the government knows best would be weakened.

Stay Safe

Les Carpenter said...

Well said Dave and as accurate as accurate can be. Now, having said that I have always believed states rights is NOT in and of itself neccessarily a bad thing. As a matter of fact I believe the Constitution sats that those things not specified in the Constitution as the the responsibility if the federal government remain with the states.

I know I prefer the state of MA state government to say Alabama's or Kentucky's. And I prefer the state of MA position on cannabis and gun regulation over the federal governments position.

However, when it comes to BASIC human rights, environmental protections, and other issues broadly affect the whole of the United States then the feds should supercede the states. Which is why we fought the egregiously racist SOUTH from 1860-1865 and DEFEATED their racist as*es.

Dave Miller said...

Like the ones that made marriages like mine illegal for decades.

Unless you're a racist exclamation point! I don't care about my fellow man kind of guy.

Typos... dang!

Shaw Kenawe said...

SKUD: "If you will recall it was democrats who committed those indiscretions decades ago. It was democrats who were the leaders on Jim Crowe so you are slinging arrows at you own party."

If you will recall, skud, as soon as the Democrats passed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, the people who considered themselves Democrats switched parties and made the South a solid Republican bloc.

See, skud, what YOU and others who continue to claim it was the Democrats who were the Jim Crowe South refuse to face is that what those people who changed from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party always were -- SOUTHERNERS. The greatest numbers of lynchings and KKKers were perpetrated in the south and were southerners. Fact. That never changed when those people changed parties, and that's all they changed, political parties, but the ethos of that part of the country -- racism -- stayed the same. It just switched parties.

skud: "Racism and civil rights abuses are not just in the South."

True, but you must remember the birthplace of the KKK was in Tennessee, the South.

Dave Miller said...

Skud... of course it was a rant. I'm sorry to say both the southerners who claim to be patriots, would never allow a Mexican or a Japanese flag to be flown over a state capital. But here in America, they can fly the treasonous stars and bars proudly. Why is that? They lost the war. Sorry.

Conservatives hate the ideas of other cultures coming here and bringing another value systems to the US, but the fact is, our country has had two value since our inception. One of those systems is racist. From our birth. Thurgood Marshall called it our original sin.

And one region of the country fought for the right to own people and to this day, refuse to acknowledge the damage they wrought on our nation, even calling the Civil War the "War of Northern Aggression". If another country had done half the crap the south did to our own citizens, we'd be "bombing them back to the stone age" as people desire for "those other cultures".

As for Voter ID, I'd support it and so would most Dems, under these conditions...

1. It's phased in to essentially grandfather the final people living in our country who might not have proper documents. Children of ex-slaves, etc.
2. The standard is set from a, wait for it, "Federal Level" so every state has the same laws and no state can enact spurious laws to disenfranchise voters. Something we still see today.
3. The effort is backed up by federal money for the roll out, registration and enforcement.

Because we know the states rights people would try and cheat. As they've done for years.

Finally, let me say this... yes, the Party of Lincoln was the GOP. The Southern Dems were some of the most racist people in all of American... think George Wallace. But the values of the parties have flipped since the Civil Rights era. One need only look no further than a guy like Rand Paul, the GOP Senator from Kentucky. He's on record, as a Republican Senator, saying he would not have voted for the Civil Rights Act. He's also on record as saying that businesses should be able to discriminate and let the market decide.

Sorry, but again, our country fought a war to defeat that ideology. Sadly Paul, and many other southern patriots didn't get the memo.

BTW folks... the next couple of weeks are going to be really bad for Mexico as it relates to Covid. If you're the praying type, now's a good time.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Dave prayers are good, but do you have a link where people may want to send money?

skudrunner said...

Rev, I will say about you voter's rights portion.
How many ex-slaves do you know, yea me neither
Since we are mostly referring to federal elections Federal Level should apply

We know states rights people would try to cheat, really you believe that. Vote cheating is a way of life in many areas, Chicago comes to mind.
Texas is the only state that allows the State flag to be flown above the US flag. There is little difference in flying a flag of Mexico at a rally to flying the confederate flag. Remember the Alamo was Mexican aggression against a state and country.

Hope Mexico is no affected to a large degree by the virus because, unfortunately they have the infrastructure of a third world country and a completely corrupt government at all levels unlike the US where all of DC and some local governments are corrupt.

I'm a fan of Kevin Phillips, inventor of the 'Southern Strategy'. Unquestionably
brilliant, but without conscience, he was the driver of appealing to southern
racism, attacking Lyndon Johnson's Great society and other liberal legislation.
Overnight, millions of Dixiecrats flocked to the GOP. Shaw is right..exact same
people, exact same out look..just up and switched...and brought us Nixon, Reagan,
Bush and now Trump. But why would I be a fan of the erudite Phillips? Like David
Stockton of TrickleDown Is Economics, (not a bladder problem), who not long after
agreed with the data and experts...it was and is smoke and mirrors: Kevin Phillips
went him one better. His dismay with the results of the Southern Strategy led him to research and write a number of data loaded books-all very anti-modern Republican.
Both of these men were bright-and both of them admitted their errors. So, if Skud
is well read, he might investigate them...and like them, do an about face. :)
