I wonder if the Trump Admin will go to the SCOTUS about this? I wonder what day the Mothership will complain about the left never letting Trump do what he wants to make America great. I wonder when they will say this judge, an obvious leftest America hater was just SO NASTY!!!
I wonder if the mothership will understand that Trump broke the law by putting his name on a congressionally designated memorial to President John F. Kennedy? That would be like Trump putting his name on the Lincoln memorial and renaming it the Trump Lincoln memorial! Trump broke the law the courts told him he must obey the law. That’s all this is; it’s simple. Why should anyone have a problem with that?
The Funding Gap: With Trump walking away from his $257 million overhaul plan, there is currently no approved roadmap or unified funding source to replace the roof, secure structurally troubled areas, or fix the aging facility
Why should anyone believe what Trump and his administration said about the JFK performing art center? Why should we believe it needs all the repairs and that it was falling apart? Trump is a liar and a cheat and he’s corrupt. Why should we believe anything that he says?
Actually -FJ, who cares about funding at this point? The rehab and repair of the Kennedy Center, if it is indeed needed, is not germane, nor the issue.
Trump can still do his repairs. If he really cares about the institution, he will. If he doesn't, we will see that his interest was not on the well being of the arts in the US, but rather seeing his name on a building.
What's germane here is the law. And if the law says A and you choose to do B, it is illegal. Plain and simple. SCOTUS Justice Breyer said...
“One, you follow the law. Two, if you don't like the law, you gather with other people, and you get it changed through a democratic process.”
SCOTUS Justice Scalia said...
"It may well be stupid, but if it's stupid, pass a law! Don't think the originalist interpretation constrains you."
And SCOTUS Justice Gorsuch said...
"If you don't like the law, you go across the street. You change it. It's not my job to do their job... To me, it's what keeps us free."
Why is POTUS Trump so enamored with trying to work around the law, the law that Gorsuch says, "keeps us free".
You'd be a lot more fun here if you stuck to the issues at hand.
Well -FJ, first, I'm not sure POTUS Trump was ponying up his personal money. And second, the US is not like the rest of the world. Or universe for that matter.
I'd also add, most people get their name on a building after they invest their money or get the project done.
OMG!! A "woke" building now? Racists and bigots LOVE to use that term as a derogatory invective. Everything they hate is "woke". They even had to steal it from African Americans to diminish its original meaning, since only white people are the "victims of racism" in Trumpistan. Mighty white of Joe, I must say.
No Skud... It's an arts and cultural center. Apart from a few high profile events, tickets could be got for between $10.00 [rush tickets] to $300.00. For high quality plays, musicals, concerts and more, those prices are pretty common around the US. In Las Vegas, average prices at the similar Smith Center run from about $50.00 to $300.00.
And many people who attend in both locations are not rich or self important. Just regular people wanting to see a concert or a show and enjoy a night out.
Again Dave very few people have attended anything at the Kennedy Center and it receives press only when there is a high brow event. I'm sure Ms. Shaw has attended but how many time have you. If someone wants to donate to have it renovated go for it but it shouldn't be done with tax payers money.
Someone has obviously never set foot in the Kennedy Center. I've seen dozens of performances there and I am solidly in the low income category for the DC area. Many, many people care what happens to the Kennedy Center. I'm gifting an article from the Post from March that profiles the longest serving volunteer of the Kennedy Center. Hardly a rich person... https://wapo.st/43FqSLQ
Then there is the Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences:
Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences creates, commissions, produces, presents, and tours national and international performances for students and families throughout the D.C. area and around the country. We work passionately to create and present performances worthy of young people and their families. We are on an audience-centric mission, believing that engaging with the performing arts can change lives. We know that performing arts experiences can create a spark – from an image, an idea, a character, or a turn of phrase – and that spark can inspire the young people we serve as they grow into the citizen artists of the future. KCTYA strives to produce and present extraordinary programming – pushing boundaries with form, content, and space - for audiences ages 0 and up, their families, and schools. We work to engage our community, extending and expanding the performance experience beyond the stage. We serve as a resource to the national and international theater for young audiences field, nurturing the development of new work, and providing opportunities for both emerging and established artists.
The JFK Performing Arts Center is a federal building, and the federal government (Congress) is responsible for proposing, approving, and allocating monies for renovations and improvements. That would be Trump's administration now. But Trump was never interested in doing the right thing for the JFK PAC, all he wanted was to stick his name (illegally) on the building.
PS. You're just being contrary and a pot stirrer, par habitude.
Congratulations Skud... you've once again moved the goal posts after what you asserted was shown not to be true. First the KC was for "the rich and self important". When that was shown to be false, you switched to "few people have attended an event there", asking me if I've ever attended an event at the KC.
Newsflash amigo, I don't live on the east coast. I live in Las Vegas so the types of shows that would typically happen there, I see at the Smith Center in Las Vegas.
In the last full non-Trump year, attendance at the KC hovered around 92% of capacity.
As for funding renovations, the KC is owned by the US Government. Are you saying all US Government facilities and properties, including those operated by the US Park Service, should be funded by private donations?
Or just the ones you, or politicians you like, don't approve of?
Dave, Your generosity is heartwarming. I have no idea of who attends the federally funded kennedy center because the only time it is mentioned is some gala for the rich and self important. PL glad you have the opportunity to join the elite.
So, skud, my friend, you say you "have no idea of who attends the federally funded kennedy center..." but you think its "...for the rich and self important."
Those statements tell me a lot about how you perceive people who attend cultural events and other entertainments. You think they're self-important snobs.
I have news for you, you're wrong. Do not label what you don't like or understand as "self-important or snobs,"
My parents were southern Italians from a poor village in Sicily, yet they knew and loved the great operas, world symphonies, and Neapolitan songs. It was a cultural thing growing up in a country where people valued those cultural treasures and passed that love onto their children.
I get the sense that you resent our country having a national center for the performing arts. Do you? If so, why?
Every advanced country has a national theater of some sort to promote music, dance, theater. Maybe skud doesn't like that sort of thing and so he ridicules those who do and maybe doesn't like his tax money going to support culture events.
Skud hasn't expressed why he thinks only self-important people go to see great music, dance, and theater.
Perfect Skud... In one post you state the Kennedy Center is "for the rich and self important".
Then as is typical of you, you get challenged with facts and now you say...
"have no idea of who attends the federally funded kennedy center".
So which is it? Were you wrong and just made a BS statement the first time?
Or were you wrong and made a BS statement the second time?
Because both statements cannot be true.
This is why sane people pull their hair out when trying to communicate with you Skud. You state stuff with no back up or facts, get called, change your tune, and never own up to your false statements.
I'm sure you're smirking behind your keyboard now.
And you blame everything bad, including Trump, on the Dems. While you delightfully ignore the facts of your own complicity.
Now who is going over the top. I said have private funds rebuild the Kennedy Center and now I don't like music, dance, theater and cultural events. I apologize if I offended the high brows on this site but maybe you can dig deep and help with the renovation so the people who will never attend don't have to foot the bill. I will admit I am not a fan of opera or ballet but give me country or bluegrass and I am all in. As to dance, Texas Two Step or swing is great. See I am cultured just like different entertainment.
skud: "I said have private funds rebuild the Kennedy Center..."
The Kennedy Center receives annual appropriations from Congress, but this federal funding is restricted to the maintenance, security, and capital repairs of the building as a designated national memorial. The government does not fund the Center's artistic performances or educational programming. The Center’s artistic performances, educational initiatives, and daily administrative functions are funded almost entirely by private philanthropy, corporate sponsorships, and ticket sales.
Since Congress is responsible for the building, that actually means OUR TAXES are responsible, and those taxes come from American citizens. You and me.
If you read my comment CAREFULLY, I did not say you didn't like music, dance, theater and cultural events. My criticism was about your characterization of those who attend the events as "the rich and self-important."
I then said I got the sense that you resent our taxes going to fund a national theater and wanted to know if that were true, why you felt that way.
Yes Skud, country is an important part of our heritage and culture. That's one reason so many country greats have been honored by and at the Kennedy Center. There's also been a number of country themed musicals there too.
It's an arts and culture center, dedicated to America. All of America, chartered by an act of a bi-partisan Congress for that purpose in remembrance and honor of President JFK.
Too bad you’ve never been attended anything at the Kennedy Center. You might have enjoyed yourself and gotten that chip off your shoulder… Legendary Honorees and Tribute Performers Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Emmylou Harris, and Garth Brooks Past events have featured standout tributes by artists like Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett, Rosanne Cash, and Vince Gill. Bluegrass & String Masters The Center has championed traditional and progressive acoustic music, hosting several renowned string masters.String Masters (2006): A legendary acoustic supergroup featuring Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Béla Fleck, Mark Schatz, and Bryan Sutton.Earl Scruggs: The bluegrass pioneer performed live at the venue, delivering iconic sets like "Sitting on Top of the World". Millennium Stage & Contemporary ConcertsThe Kennedy Center’s free Millennium Stage in the Grand Foyer frequently showcases both emerging and established country and bluegrass acts.Groups and Artists: Performances have included Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road, Big Richard, AJ Lee & Blue Summit, The Gibson Brothers, and the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band.
PL... Sorry I did miss those appearances but that would require going to DC which I have no interest in revisiting. I'd rather see them in Vegas or even LA. Why are people so against the proposal of private funds building a new ball room at the WH but funding a performance arts center is great. I know private funds will not build the ballroom but why such an uproar. I have no issue with the Kennedy center but if you can get private funds to fix it, why not. Now that the ego name is being removed will that make using private funds more acceptable?
I usually don't respond to Skud because he is so disingenuous. First he claims: "The center is an establishment for the rich and self important so if it falls down will most people care?" We then counter that ridiculous statement with the facts that the Kennedy Center is open to all and has many low cost and free performances.
Skud then states that he doesn't like ballet or opera insinuating that is all that is performed at the KC. We then counter that with facts about all the different (and again, free) programming at the KC, including country and blue grass, that Skud prefers. Skud then turns his nose up and says he would rather go to Las Vegas of LA and moves the goal posts yet again to private funding.
The Kennedy Center has always had corporate sponsors. Donald Sherman, who heads the legal advocacy group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, stated “The White House has aggressively solicited this additional money. Private companies have paid this money in fealty to the president, and we should know why they paid it, and what's going to happen to it, and the administration should give it back.”
Trump is all about backroom deals. What has he promised all these corporations for their millions? Even lower corporate taxes? Absolutely no regulations? Guaranteed federal contracts?
Because skud when you use private, capital class funds, the private profit sector will own the property created, gets to determine the venue, determine ticket pricing, and etc. Prices will rise to insure profit to desirable levels set by capital.
Public funds must be used to insure a non partisan agenda.
Anytime private capital is involved the only motive is profit. Which explains the exceeding high cost of Healthcare in America as well as health insurance.
After further research, I found that the government provides the KC with 16% of its budget. Boiled down to the individual taxpayer, that amounts to between .23 and .26 cents (yes cents) per person, per year.
Some people may be surprised at all the state taxpayer funds that go into state arts and entertainment. There is a LOT of taxpayer funded arts in the state of Texas, alone...
And here we go. Granted this is regarding the ballroom and not the KC, but this story was just released by the Post: “Ballroom donors won $50B in contracts after giving to Trump project, watchdog group finds” Possumlady

Think any self-respecting Trump donors would pony up $257m to fix the old 'woke' Kennedy Center? Not on your life.
It appears that what you don’t understand will always be labeled, “ woke.” SAD
Also, at this point, I don’t know any Trump supporter that has any self-respect. They lost all of that years ago by supporting a crook & a madman.
👍👍👍- Second That!

A rebrand is LONG overdue!
lol! I have a very precise definition of woke.
European and White North American sufferers of post-colonialism/ post-slavery induced guilt-pride.
...in other words, the civic religion of the Democratic Party (no longer just JFK's democrats).
