The USA's growing ignorance means specifically the present federal government. As well as the present republican party power structure. NOT the MAJORITY of the people in the nation.
In Las Vegas, the too small airport sits in the middle of the urban area. Planners have identified a site some 10 miles or so outside of the metro area, just south of town.
It's wide open desert land.
It will be 10 years we've been told before we can even begin construction.
I wonder how many airports China could build in 10 years... Ezra Klein is right. China has figured out that to better peoples lives, you've got to be able to build things. It really is that simple.
Dave, The airports will be built as soon as there is enough political graft to make the politicians satisfied. I am surprised that Nevada would follow California's lead on how to bog down construction with endless permits and payoffs. If we could figure out a way to keep politicians fingers out of everything we could move forward.
Take the means of production back from the oligarchs and return it to the rightful owners, the people not the elite wealthty capitalists, and let democratic government balance the system to serve the whole of society. Not just the wealthy oligarchs who have exploited labor for 300 years.
Even Gavin Newsome supports the greatest exploitation ever devised, capitalism.
Here's the problem Les no one seems to want to consider.
We're all oligarchs.
With public ownership of the companies such as Meta, Google, Apple, Amazon and more, those companies may not, by law, prioritize public gain or long term growth over short term profits, large year over year smaller income over sustained good for the community growth, less upkeep at the expense of profit today and on and on it goes.
Young people get it. They are angry and largely have no real stake yet in PAX Americana Big Business. But their parents, us, do. And we expect those companies to keep growing, making more money and keep our 401Ks, stock portfolios and dividend reinvestments and checks to keep growing.
We go into a store on Monday to get something, leaving disgusted by the lack of help and the fact WE are checking ourselves out. But all that leaves the mind when the mail arrives, or we go online and see OUR retirement has grown in a way our parents could never have imagined.
And we ourselves are invested in that store we visited earlier in the week.
We are now but slaves to the very anti humane capitalist economic and political systems we as a society, over approximately 300 hundred years, created, Dave. The system was designed to accomplish exactly that. And it has been phenomenally effective in producing the results it desired.
To change the system will require great courage as well as initial sacrifice. But first it will require a deeper understanding of the current system and its continual exploitation of the many for the benefit of the few.
I recommend the book Escape from Capitalism for anyone truly interested in understanding our capitalist economic/political system.
Jumping into the middle but when I say the kids I mean the tattooed and pierced fierce ones who have no time for lies. They see so clearly it's refreshing. I was shocked to find out I'm following over fifteen hundred souls, all vetted for facts sake. One piece of disinformation and they're blocked from my feed. One example of bad behavior without any accountability? Yep, same airlock to use the metaphor by Jim Wright.
So a question was asked "What do we do?"
Well, The Kids aren't purchasing stuff as much as my generation. They are into the experience, hence all the digital reminders of what and when they did a thing. I say these things as an absolute but nothing is absolute, there is always perspectives but the trend is to live without so much stuff.
That ideology has the corporate overlords in a panic. They need us to be consumers because their path only succeeds if we continue to feed the machine. Kids have said nope and I'm doing my best to join them. The indoctrination is real and I've a lifetime of TV ads and socialization cues to wade through. My one saving grace is I was never an idea test subject, living on both sides of the veil as I do.
The system is already broken and the people who are prepared to be the next wielders of the tool that is government are willing let the old ways die out because they have a new way (echoing the ancient ways) which includes everyone and they'd like to give it a try for a while. I say let them.
The machine is the capital class. Supported by the political class who accept the narative of the neoclassical economists.
The capital class efforts are solely aimed at increasing profits to increase their already obscene wealth. Largely by exploitation of the working class as well as sucking at the government's teat of excessively low taxation and anti labor legislation. The austerity now imposed on our people through reduction or elimination of neccessary social programs is done so to drive further wealth into the capitalists coffers.
War, a total social evil, is another tool of the capitalist class. Why? It funnels billions of dollars into the coffers of the capital class that produces that build the means of destruction.
Marx, as it turns out, was right. The evidence is playing out just as he no doubt recognized it would.

As the Chinese are imagining and building the society of the future Americans are busy dreaming of the past.
The future belongs to the nations that progressively move forward to better the lot of everyone, not just the wealthy oligarchs of the nation.
The MAGA track leads to stagnation and eventual collapse.
As China, Russia, and Iran, among othes, salivate over the USA's growing ignorance.

Newsome's $21b "train to nowhere" comes to mind.

Squandering California's economic surplus on useless "works" like an Egyptian pharoah constructing a pyramid (Georges Bateilles "A Part Maudite")
...or Trump on a $1b WH Ballroom... @@
Yep...
Or the train from nowhere in So Cal to Las Vegas. They've been talking about it for 40 years.

Time for a potlatch? A bonfire of the vanities? Or a war in Ukraine?
What else are we saving for, if not to waste the accumulated surplus in one giant disastrous wasteful/ luxurious outburst (ala Georges Bataille).
Like the Fallas in Valencia or the Tomatina in Bunol...
-FJ... maybe we should change some lyrics around to say... "Wealth, huuh. What is it good for? Absolutely nothin'..."
...but that would be an action originating from stregnth. :)
Agreed. To understand and ACCEPT truth (reality) is strength. The gateway is the path to the inner self and the eventual realization of non duality.
