The failure of Merrick Garland not to prosecute Trump immediately after January 6th is going to be a historical failure of epic proportions. Brazil did this with Bolsonaro and they beat back the far right through muscular democracy.
Most Americans have simultaneously embraced the idea that crime pays, and a criminal like Trump should run a police state. Adolf would be proud of his legacy. The Fourth Reich is here.
