The Differences Between The 47 GOP Senators' Iran Letter And Pelosi's 2007 Syria Visit

UPDATE BELOW

Media Matters for America yesterday demolished Republican attempts to compare Tom Cotton’s Iran letter to Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Syria in 2007.

Somehow, we are supposed to believe, Nancy Pelosi visiting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with full knowledge of the White House and State Department, is the same thing as attacking the president’s foreign policy [without telling the Executive Branch] by trying to undermine it with radicals in the other government, are the same thing.

93%  of the 7,000 Americans polled by the Washington Post said the 47 Republican senators who tried to sabotage President Obama's efforts to negotiate an agreement went too far.

Went too far? How about went to the other side? Made common cause with the mullahs?  That's more like what those saboteurs did.

And here's more information on their ring leader, Tehran Tom:

UPDATE:

TeaPublicans still trying to put lipstick on their pig-letter.
Not working.

Americans are totally disgusted with what they did.

Republican unity shatters after backlash to Iran letter

And lastly, when you're a newly-minted, green-behind-the-ears GOP senator and have to explain to the world that you're "NOT A TRAITOR" to your country, it's a pretty good sign that you have lost what dreams you had of being a "Big. Important. Player." in anything to do with the U.S. government.

The Gestalt of the GOP: A vampires' regard for mirrors and a refusal to see their own reflections and be held accountable. So they they employ various defense mechanisms to avoid responsibility for their acts: Deny, Deflect, Distract and Project. And when that doesn't work, there are the usual standbys: Deceive, defame, and double-down.

Fortunately, (O)CT(O), the American people are not deceived. I hope these clown pay dearly, politically, for their disgusting actions.

Actions of Fifth Columnists.

The republicans are well known for such tactics. Perhaps this time they will be held account for it.

Nice work GOP!

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei commented on the GOP-47’s open letter to Iran and said it represented “the collapse of political ethics and the U.S. system’s internal disintegration.” Khamenei noted that as a matter of course, nations are ‘typically’ loyal to their commitments even when the reins of power change hands, “but American senators officially announced the commitment will be null and void after this government leaves office.

Isn’t this the ultimate degree of the collapse of political ethics and the U.S. system’s internal disintegration?”

Tom Cotton?

I don't think the guy has a very high thread count.

So it is fine for the president to allow illegal imageants to flood the country, get benefits they didn't pay in to without any notice to congress but not for congressman to state our constitution.

Seems a little one sided doesn't it?

Some disagree he is the imperial ruler and why would anyone believe he will do what's best for the country

Keep in mind; Republican'Ts white-hot _HATE_ President Obama absolutely. Nothing, _NOTHING_ is beyond Republican'T's hate-filled scorched-earth desire to destroy President Obama and his accomplishment. If this means destroying USA; so be it. One can be assured the letter is not an isolated incident nor the end of the Republican'T"s effort.

The letter was not Senator Cotton's idea. And as long as Senator Cotton's paymasters are willing to bankroll him (and the 0ther 46 Republican'T slugs), he will remain in the Senate and be a player! Money talks and the people do not matter to the Senate's paymasters.

You really don't get it, do you Anonymous. You are that confused, or worse unschooled in what the ramification of what the 47 saborteurs did?

Their stupid letter has harmed not just Mr. Obama's efforts at negotiating an agreement, but it has harmed ALL presidents--Democratic AND Republican, in future negotiations with ANY country on any deal.

That you and many of your Tea Party friends and the 47 idiot senators don't understand this is explanation of how your detestation for Mr. Obama and America's standing in the world blinds you to everything. Including when your party favors America's enemies over her duly elected leader.

You are a plague on this country and not fit to be called Americans.

Ema, read Anonymous's comment.

It is perfect example of the ignorance that pervades the current TeaPublican Party and of the white hot hatred you speak of.

As I said else where, I don't know these people anymore, they're like a foreign element in America hoping to see the utter destruction of a presidency, even if it means giving aid and comfort to our enemies.

You have read the letter I assume. What the letter says is we have procedures for something to become law. Obama has a history of doing "it's the right thing to do" without consideration of congress on either side. I am not in favor of the letter but it is only a big issue because it's a slow news day.

Welcome back, Shaw.

This might help the Anon @10:22PM "get it." There's no "They Did It Too" in what the 47 did:

"The open letter to the leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran signed by 47 senators and instigated by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) was a stunning breach of protocol. One so outrageous that my former colleagues at the New York Daily News dubbed the signers “traitors.” While it is indeed a slap in the face of President Obama and an affront to the presidency, I’m not sure I would go that far, especially since Cotton is an Army veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. So, I turned to retired Major Gen. Paul D. Eaton for perspective. He wouldn’t say Cotton and Co. were “traitors,” either. He had a better word.

“I would use the word mutinous,” said Eaton, whose long career includes training Iraqi forces from 2003 to 2004. He is now a senior adviser to VoteVets.org. “I do not believe these senators were trying to sell out America. I do believe they defied the chain of command in what could be construed as an illegal act.” Eaton certainly had stern words for Cotton.

“What Senator Cotton did is a gross breach of discipline, and especially as a veteran of the Army, he should know better,” Eaton told me. “I have no issue with Senator Cotton, or others, voicing their opinion in opposition to any deal to halt Iran’s nuclear progress. Speaking out on these issues is clearly part of his job. But to directly engage a foreign entity, in this way, undermining the strategy and work of our diplomats and our Commander in Chief, strains the very discipline and structure that our foreign relations depend on, to succeed.” The consequences of Cotton’s missive were plainly apparent to Eaton. “The breach of discipline is extremely dangerous, because undermining our diplomatic efforts, at this moment, brings us another step closer to a very costly and perilous war with Iran,” he said."

Anon @9:59. You don't get it. And I don't expect you to.

What Cotton and the 46 did was seditious. It has nothing to do with a "slow news day." That's what people who want to stop further discussion would say, because they know that what the 47 did was a political stunt that will have lasting effects on this country's ability to negotiate with foreign countries, whether the president is Democratic or Republican.

If you're too thick to get that, I pity you.

You wish it were on a "slow news day" item, but in fact, it has focused this country's and the world's attention on the underhanded, seditious, and treacherous motives of the Republican Party.

Here's what the little minds on the right just can't grasp. They are so besotted with malice toward Mr. Obama that their intellect cannot break through their wall of hatred and ignorance to allow them to see what is in front of their noses:

"Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations and an aide in both Bush administrations, said partisan overtures such as the GOP letter make the world more uncertain, dangerous and disorderly."

This is what the lunkheads on the right do not want to read:

In Ohio, the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cincinnati Enquirer endorsed Sen. Rob Portman's 2010 campaign, but they berated him this week for signing the Iran letter.

"The magnitude of this disgraceful decision," a Plain Dealer editorial said, "shows the degree to which partisanship has gobbled up rationality on foreign policy."

The Cincinnati Enquirer's editorial said the letter "diminishes the dignity of the Senate by disparaging the president and presenting an amateur lesson on U.S. governance.

They try to pass this whole sordid affair off as a nothing, when they absolutely know that the mutinous actions of the 47 are deeply unAmerican and border on the treasonous.

"...on Oct. 22, 1962, Kennedy spoke to the nation about the Cuban missile crisis, which had the potential to spark a nuclear war. Over 13 days, Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev worked out a deal in which the Soviets would dismantle their missile sites in Cuba in exchange for a pledge that the United States would not invade Cuba.

Now imagine that, in the midst of those negotiations, a band of Republican senators had sent an open letter to Khrushchev informing him that Kennedy lacked the authority to deliver on any negotiated deal. That would have been preposterous.

Not today. We have reached a bad place in America."--Colbert King

We? No. The turncoat TeaPublicans are responsible for this mess.

Even as I exhale my breath is shared by my neighbor. In this all things are connected.

It doesn't matter who started it. It matters that the adults in the room take up the mantle of responsibility and end it.

How do we do this? Think globally, act locally. Clean up the mess in our own back yards. The national theatre merely reflects what is happening at home.

Occupy America. That is my plan anyway
