2nd Amendment Rights Without Responsibilities, Part the Infinity

Words fail me:

2nd Amendment Rights Without Responsibilities:

A musician, teacher and new father is dead after a stray bullet pierced the wall of his Florida home on Tuesday and struck him in the back of the head.

The Panama City News Herald reported that 33-year-old Justin Ayers and his wife were welcoming their 3-day-old baby home from the hospital with relatives when Justin was killed.

The bullet came from the house next door, where 62-year-old Charles Edward Shisler picked up a .9 mm pistol by the trigger, causing it to discharge. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found Shisler standing on his porch, although he initially was “belligerent” and uncooperative.

“The damn gun doesn’t usually shoot,” said Shisler, according to his arrest report. “You have to squeeze the hell out of the trigger to shoot it.”

A blood test taken more than four hours after the shooting found that Shisler had a blood alcohol level of .079.

The legal limit for driving in Florida is .08. Shisler told deputies he had tried to pick up the gun by its trigger. After the gunshot, he said, he hastily tried to hide the weapon under his mattress.

Just another day in the life of a country gone nuts.

I knew by age 10 you don't pick up a firearm by the trigger. Oh, and my responsible father taught me young to ALWAYS have the safety lock engaged except when aiming to shoot.

Oops, and never mix alcohol and firearms.

Common Sense, Personal Responsibility, Respect. Certainly all are lacking in Shitsler, er. I mean Shisler.

There is not much that can be done to keep the guns out of the hands of irresponsible people. But once they prove their irresponsibility like this guy has done, they should be prevented from ever possessing any gun again.

The NRA is going to have to push for a change to the second amendment, replacing 'a well regulated militia' with 'any halfwit idiot'.

There is no individual right to a gun. Read Madison on the intent of the second amendment.

It's interesting to note that our licenses to own cars and trucks and other personal means of transportation come with responsibilities, rules, and restrictions.

As one example, we decided, as a nation, that wearing seat belts in cars saves lives, and placing infants and young children in car seats also saves lives. In many states our cars have to be inspected to make sure they are in safe working condition, and we are all required to carry insurance on our vehicles.

So when I hear folks say cars kill people, too. I usually remind them of all the safety requirements, rules, and restrictions imposed in order to legally operate those vehicles.

I would vote for requiring people who own firearms to have personal insurance so that if as a result of irresponsibly using the firearm, they have to pay the victim of their stupidity.

Mental health testing for everyone who owns or wishes to own a firearm.

I would also require safety locks on all guns.

I would not allow a person to own a gun until he or she was 21. Our young people are considered not mature enough to drink until that age, but they can own a gun as young as 5 years old? That is crazy.

There are other sensible restrictions that would not interfere with firearm ownership, hunting, and target shooting, but these would be a start.

We have proven to ourselves that we are grossly irresponsible when it comes to owning and operating guns. Yes, I know most firearm owners are responsible, but most drivers of vehicles are responsible as well.

My point is that there are enough irresponsible and idiotic firearm owners in this country that we read every day some horrendous incident that either takes the life of a child or adult.

I do not believe for one minute that nothing can be done.

Yes Shaw, cars kill people to. And thanks to regulation and improved engineering they kill far fewer than were killed just a few decades ago despite a large increase in miles driven.

Economists and sociologists have done extensive research on optimum choice theory and the results are in. Left to our own we often choose poorly and go against our long term self interest.

But clearly we always come to our senses with firearms like that guy in Pennsylvania who recently shot himself in the penis as he was holstering his weapon in the car.

Shaw... off topic, but today I became convinced that the apocalypse is upon us... Both Rupert Murdoch and Sheldon Adelson came out strong in support of immigration reform calling the naysayers nativists and fringe.

Finally we are seeing some sanity, at least from the financial backers of the GOP, if not the extremists that are pushing the party's agenda...

Dave, that is amazing news. I have to read more about it.

Thanks for the heads-up.

"As to suggestions by some opponents of gun control that shortcomings in the country’s mental-health system are to blame, Mr. Obama pointed out the United States “does not have a monopoly on crazy people,” only on the unfettered access to weapons it gives people capable of doing unbelievable damage.

Good for Mr. Obama for speaking forcefully and calling on the country as a whole to do some “soul searching.” A Congress that’s more terrified of the National Rifle Association than another Sandy Hook needs to be pushed to change by a public willing to vote out those who won’t act."

This has been happening slowly, Dave.

The business branch of he Republican party realizes it has a tiger by the tail and has been trying to throttle back on the Teabags.

They realize that the insanity isn't playing well in most of America.

yeah let's take in everyone's children who sent them here on a dangerous mission unaccompanied and then put out a warrant for their parents to have them arrested for endangering the welfare of a minor.
That is the real issue here.
