Never forget: Trump stated on July 31, 2025, in remarks to reporters: A new White House ballroom “won't interfere with the current building.”
Speaking with Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), Chris Hayes of All In with Chris Hayes admitted that the destruction of the East Wing hit him hard. “There was really something visceral about those images that landed,” he told the senator. “I wonder if you or other colleagues or other people you’re talking to have had that same reaction.”
Murphy answered: “[T]here’s a lot of history that has taken place in the East Wing, and it was just destroyed without any conversation in the American public, without any consent of Congress. It was absolutely illegal…. [T]hat visual is powerful because you are essentially watching the destruction of the rule of law happen as those walls come down. It is just a symbol about how cavalier he is, about every single day acting in new and illegal ways.
“That’s the story with the killings in the Caribbean, as well. The president just doesn’t believe that any law applies to him, that he can destroy federal property, that he can steal from American citizens, that he can kill with impunity, that he can throw anyone in jail.
“We are not living in a functional democracy any longer. It’s not too late to save it, but it is just important to acknowledge that we aren’t on the precipice of losing our democracy. We are losing it every single day. We are not a functional nation with a rule of law any longer, and those toppled walls in the East Wing are a pretty stark reminder of that.”
Marshall, though, noted that Trump’s behavior “opens up opportunities the political opposition can and must exploit.” The president is “increasingly reckless, acting like someone who is free from any consequences or the need for support from anyone beyond his admirers.” But “[t]he reality is that Trump is deeply unpopular.”

I can hardly wait to witness the cult of Cult of MAGA response to this one. The folks who used to claim their reverence for the founders and their founding principles seem to be a-okay with THER malevolent Fuhrer King destroying it ALL.
tRump's hate for the good and his vindictive retribution against anyone and anything that opposes his idiocy and idiotic agenda is truly representative of the very worst in what is now Amerika.
Shaw... why would people okay with an invasion of the US Capitol, the beating of over 120 US Capitol Police Officers, who chanted "burn it down" and "hang Mike Pence" and who carried the flags in a political rally glorifying the Nazis and the traitors who tried to rip the United States apart, care about another federal building?
BTW... it's now the entire East Wing of the White House.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and predict that the Conservative, Independents, and Libertarians will make up excuses to justify Trump lying about the destruction of the East Wing to make room for his Imperial Ballroom.
I think we can accurately guess what their reaction would have been had former President Obama done this.
There was so much American history attached to the East Wing, but Trump is neither an American history buff, nor ANY sort of history buff. His callous disregard for The People's House and what it represents to the American people is shocking -- NOT!
I've read that even Conservatives are appalled at Trump's grotesque destruction of the historic structure. The demolition of the East Wing was initiated to build Trump's 90,000 sq.ft. imperial ballroom, despite Trump's earlier promises that the project would not interfere with the existing building (another lie by the Liar-in-Chief).
BTW, the White House is approximately 55,000 square feet and includes six floors with 132 rooms.
Trump claimed the East Wing was "never thought of as being much," and dismissed its historical importance, despite its role in many significant events.
This is what America gets when it elects a history moron and malignant narcissist who is hellbent on degrading and destroying everything he touches.
I guess, in theory, one could argue, based on a site map, that the East Wing is not... oops, was not part of the White House, as it was simply connected via a hallway.
It's not satisfying, but it could "technically" be argued as such.
But it does not change his statements about no destruction to the East Wing.
In case you were wondering why Trump did not ask for plan check or review, it's because he's assured of his rightness, abilities and construction acumen. Therefore, there's no need for any of the above, because he's the smartest guy in the room.
Who ever thought we'd elect Joe "you've got my word on it" Isuzu as president?
Rex Huppke, USAToday columnist:
"I'm not any kind of U.S. history buff, I don't know much about architecture and I've never given a lot of thought to historical preservation. But still, I find these images of the East Wing demolition to be viscerally gutting. I'm guessing a lot of other Americans are equally horrified."
Demolition brought to you by MAGA...
It's too bad we can't simply feed King Donnie bananas to keep him happy.
The Reichstag, not the Reich Chancellory.
When he tears down the Capitol bldg, Then is the time to start worrying.
A difference without a distinction. Making excuses for your demented authoritarian?
They already tried that Joe... remember the ppl smashing windows, throwing shit on the walls, threatening to kill the VP and members of Congress all the while beating the crap out of US Capitol Police?
Or are you going to resort to the LARPER dodge rather than deal with facts, a la Alex Jones?
That's what unthinking cultists do. With gusto in jc's case.
LOL!
“I think for the American people, this is tough to watch. We look at these images of the East Wing just being completely destroyed,” Sarah Matthews said, recalling her time working in the same wing for First Lady Melania Trump. “This is not Trump’s house, this is the people’s house, and there can be arguments to be made if this ballroom was necessary. [Then] he could have gone through the proper channels for this to get approved.”
Trump originally promised he would pay for the extravagant addition himself. Now, however, he’s reportedly seeking donations from “friends” in Big Tech and business — including Meta, Amazon, and Palantir Technologies. That move, Matthews said, makes the entire project smell like pay-to-play politics.
“This just reeks of this broader narrative of the reckless destruction taking place under this administration, and not just that, but the corruption,” she said. “Because you look at the list of these donors, you see companies like Meta, Amazon, Palantir. These are all companies that have bent the knee to him and then have been awarded contracts, and so it just reeks of bribery and corruption.”

It is not permitted. They did not get planning permission,” Boardman continued. “There are no records that any EPA permits were done. Any testing, soil testing, building testing. This is absolutely a money laundering grift. And it won’t cost $250 million. It will be three times that and there’s no way that it’s going to be done in 3 years.”
Between the missing permits, the donor list, and the ever-growing price tag, critics say the so-called “Trump Ballroom” is shaping up to be more than just another flashy Trump project — it’s becoming a full-blown symbol of political corruption and excess."
