Anti-Women, Anti-Science, Anti-Gay, Pro-Firing Squad: Your Modern GOP At Work

GOP lawmaker calls women “a lesser cut of meat”

A Republican state senator in South Carolina called women “a lesser cut of meat” and suggested that they belonged barefoot and pregnant, the libertarian-leaning blog FITS News reports.

Chauvinist in any context, Corbin’s remarks occurred during a legislative dinner this week to discuss domestic violence legislation. Sources present at the meeting told FITS that Corbin directed his comments at fellow GOP state senator Katrina Shealy, the sole woman in the 46-member chamber.

“I see it only took me two years to get you wearing shoes,” Corbin told Shealy, who won election in 2012. Corbin, the site explains, is said to have previously cracked that women should be “at home baking cookies” or “barefoot and pregnant,” not serving in the state legislature.

“He makes comments like that all the time to everybody – including Senator Shealy,” said one legislative aide who spoke to FITS.

Montana Conservative ‘Christian': Force Women To Cover Up By Law Just Like Iran Does

A Montana Republican single-handedly reinforced the idea that conservative “Christians” are no different than Muslim fundamentalists when he introduced a bill that would ban women from wearing yoga pants and other revealing or tight-fitting clothing.

On Tuesday, GOP state Rep. David Moore introduced a draconian bill in the state legislature that would amend the state’s indecent exposure laws in a way that would turn Montana into a puritanical society that the Ayatollah of Iran would be proud of. HB 365 makes it illegal for a person to knowingly expose,

any device, costume, or covering that gives the appearance of or simulates the genitals, pubic hair, anus region, or pubic hair region or exposes any device worn as a cover over the nipple or areola of the female breast that simulates and gives the realistic appearance of a nipple or areola while in a public place or visible from a public place without taking reasonable precautions to prevent exposure, and disregards whether a reasonable person would be offended or alarmed by the act.

“Yoga pants should be illegal in public anyway,” he said according to the Billings Gazette after a committee hearing. Retired professor Walt Hill, who co-wrote the legislation, also made a statement.

“I want Montana to be known as a decent state where people can live within the security of laws and protect their children and associates from degrading and indecent practices. I believe this bill is written preserving that reputation.”

Religious broadcaster says Scott Walker was right: ‘Real experts’ have ‘disproven’ evolution

Religious right broadcaster defended Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who declined to say whether evolution was real when questioned by a British reporter during an overseas trip.

Radio host Sandy Rios, who also serves as governmental affairs director of the American Family Association, said during a broadcast that the likely Republican presidential candidate should not be mocked for “punting” on the question, reported Right Wing Watch.

“In the sense that Darwin taught about species morphing into other species, evolving into other types of species, that has not happened,” Rios said. “There is no scientific evidence.

GOP-Dominated Utah House Gives A Green Light To Bring Back Firing Squads

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A hotly contested proposal that resurrects Utah's use of firing squads to carry out executions narrowly passed a key vote Friday in the state's Legislature after three missing lawmakers were summoned to break a tie vote. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted 39-34 Friday morning to approve the measure, sending it to an uncertain fate in the state's GOP-controlled Senate. Leaders in that chamber have thus far declined to say if they'll support it, and Utah's Republican Gov. Gary Herbert won't say if he'll sign it.

GOP Rep.: Gay Marriage Harms Children, Economy And Society -

"...on “Washington Watch,” Rep. Tim Huelskamp called on Congress to hold a vote on his Marriage Protection Amendment, which would impose a national ban on same-sex marriage, as a way to pressure the Supreme Court against deciding in favor of marriage equality.

The Kansas Republican told Family Research Council President Tony Perkins that federal courts created “chaos” by striking down bans on same-sex marriage and now “folks are confused about what a marriage is.” Huelskamp said that if “we don’t protect the traditional basis for marriage, it harms everyone, particularly our young children.”

He also agreed with Perkins that legalizing gay marriage will “discourage family formation” and undermine the black community."

Kansas governor removes protections for LGBT employees

In a move that shocked progressive advocates in Kansas, the state's Republican governor on Tuesday issued an executive order to remove discrimination protections for gay, lesbian and transgender state employees. State employees in Kansas can now legally be fired, harassed or denied a job for being gay or transgender, critics said.

Lesser cut of meat? Well there ya go... god fearing sexist Christian attitudes on display.

The rest of the highlighted bigotry as alarming. Yes, America certainly has its share of extremists.

Ignorance and fear at work. Perhaps society is approaching a neo dark age.

As an aside, I'm guessing you'll get special mention over at the Stench Trench.

I don't think a firing squad is so bad given the gruesome, ugly mess our so called death chemicals have made.

Unfortunately, there are a significant number of people in this country that believe all these things are true. They are called the GOP base, and the GOP continually feeds these ideas.

I am not sure who is worse. The people who believe this crap, or the people who continually reinforce these ideas.

Wow, this guy has put a lot of time into thinking about this stuff.

I read about Corbin a couple of days ago. Republicans are always worrying about kids getting a less-than-perfect upbringing with single or gay parents, but I want to know how Corbin reached adulthood without anyone ever explaining to him that it's not appropriate to talk to people like that. Any job I've ever had, a man who talked to women like that would be taken aside by a manager and given a serious talking-to. Who votes for these people?

Rios is trying, but she doesn't really belong in such company, being just a dime-a-dozen conservative scientific ignoramus.

Nothing Brownback does would surprise me. He doesn't get a lot of attention, but he's one of the most vicious Republicans out there. If it weren't for Lawrence v. Texas he'd be trying to make being gay a crime again.

And it hardly needs saying that all this insanity has no parallels on our side. There are crazies on the left, but the Democratic party doesn't run them for office.

Anthony Wiener?

Shaw Kenawe said...

Other than taking a selfie of his insignificance, did Wiener ever propose legislation that makes the poors' lives more miserable? Has he ever referred to women as "meat?" Has he denied the science of evolution? Has he demeaned the gay community?

Weiner is out of a job (and rightly so) for being a self-absorbed jerk. But IMO he doesn't come close to the idiocy of the folks highlighted in this post.

Politicians love themselves; Weiner loved one particular part of himself and stupidly showed it off to the world.

skudrunner said...

So the party who attached the female VP candidate and is proud of the womanizing of Clinton, Weiner, Hart and Sharpton says the party of Reagan is against women

Craig said...

The Dems have their share of criminals and those that commit stupid acts, but only one party is home to bigotry, mean spiritedness and willful ignorance.

Except that Dem congressman who thought Guam would capsize if the island got overcrowded. Nantucket, maybe, but Guam?

Shaw Kenawe said...

skud, Sarah Palin destroyed herself. Period. Even her once avid admirers see her for the fraud that she was and is. She didn't suffer anything worse than did Barack Obama, who the trogs in the GOP do not accept as an American citizen. Palin was "attacked" for her ignorance and rightly so.

Weiner and Sharpton? That's all you got? You got nuthin' Neither one is serving in Congress. We got rid of Weiner, and Sharpton is a teevee talker.

As for the rest of your whine. Clinton was impeached, but found not guilty. He behaved very badly. But listen to this.

Thomas Jefferson is considered one of America's greatest icons. He's on Mt. Rushmore. Yet, the mind that created the Declaration of Independence never, never, never thought enough of his words "All Men Are Created Equal" to free his slaves during his life time. Not even his wife's half-sister, his mistress and mother of his children, Sally Hemmings. Her children were freed at his deaths. He did NOT free any of his slaves, in fact, he didn't even wasnt to extend citizenship to children born of African-Americans and whites. He was a harsh slave owner, believing in punishment and ownership of human beings.

And yet, America honors him.

So let's weigh having a sexual dalliance with a consenting adult woman in the White HOuse, and selling, buying and enslaving human beings.

Neither of those are good things, but I'm pretty sure what Jefferson did is far, far worse than getting a BJ in the WH.

Now go take your whine to Lisa's Stench Trench where that sort of shallow argument is considered "deep thinking."

Shaw Kenawe said...

Craig, all politicians are capable of saying dumb things. What is disturbing are the politicians, like, say, Kansas' Gov. Brownback, who reinstituted the right to discriminate against the LGBT community, or who, like Alabama Judge Moore, try to impose a religious doctrine on everyone--those types of politicians do real harm to our country.

People like skud still believe Sarah Palin was "attacked," when in fact she was responsible for her own downfall. She is a lazy, fame-seeking celeb, and nothing more.

And just recently she said she was "seriously considering running for the presidency?"

What a pathetic joke.

Les Carpenter said...

As with all humans Jefferson was a flawed man. He was to certain degree a product of his time and culture, as bad as it was. Nonetheless he was a brilliant mind and a great thinker. Certainly surpassing most in his time and ours. Apparently JFK agreed.

So say he was not hypocritical with respect to his Declaration of Independence and his actions in regards to his slaves would be foolish, in fact stupid. To deny his contributions, intellect, and importance would be as foolish. I know you did not say this Shaw, Jefferson is perhaps our greatest President, @ least in my view.

Anonymous said...

Are the cons still crying about Palin? Seriously? The biggest fraud foisted on the American people since Ronnie Raygun.

Shaw Kenawe said...

BTW, skud, is Gary Hart "seriously considering running for president?"

You named a few Dems who are NOT politicians to prove what? Also, what seems to have gone over your head entirely is the fact that the execrable behavior of the Dems you named is no longer tolerated in the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, the Tea-Pee-ers who are anti-women are in Congress and some even hope to win the presidency are very much admired in the GOP.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Yes, Jefferson was brilliant in many respects, but there were men of "his time" that freed their slaves --George Washington freed his slaves upon his death--Jefferson didn't. Why?

Also, Jefferson spent time in France, took Sally and her son with him, and observed Europeans of "his time" who were abolitionists. This is all to say that there were plenty of intellectuals and knowledgeable men of his time who saw slavery as an affront to the natural rights of men.

One of those men was the aristocratic Virginian, Robert Carter III:

"Robert Carter III, the grandson of Tidewater legend Robert “King” Carter, was born into the highest circles of Virginia’s Colonial aristocracy. He was neighbor and kin to the Washingtons and Lees and a friend and peer to Thomas Jefferson and George Mason. But on September 5, 1791, Carter severed his ties with this glamorous elite at the stroke of a pen. In a document he called his Deed of Gift, Carter declared his intent to set free nearly five hundred slaves in the largest single act of liberation in the history of American slavery before the Emancipation Proclamation."

We'll never understand why the man who wrote those eloquent words about freedom and equality could not see African-Americans as the free and equal human beings that they were and are.

More about Carter and the biography written by Andrew Levy, The First Emancipator: The Forgotten Story of Robert Carter, the Founding Father Who Freed His Slaves :

"On the most fundamental level, this work can be seen as an exploration of the "'gross imbalance' between promise and execution" that characterizes American culture. We hold the loftiest ideals of freedom and progress ("liberty and justice for all"; "no child left behind"), argues Levy, but more often than not, these ideals fall flat in practice. Levy presents a painstakingly rich portrait of an American who overcame this imbalance: Robert Carter. A contemporary of Jefferson and Washington, Carter has largely been forgotten by historians because he seems less heroic than these great men; nevertheless, he managed to do something that they and the other founding fathers-for all their greatness-could not: free his slaves with little or no material gain.

In so doing, Levy argues, Carter provides an example of an unsung American hero: no tragic flaw of moral failing to set the glow of his great deeds in sharper relief, no titanic struggle on the stage of national politics to realize his ideals, simply a thoughtful man pushing himself in moments of private reflection to rid himself of the moral contradictions of his time.

Levy does a wonderful job bringing Carter to life from the somewhat wooden written remains of his account ledgers, business journals and letters, reminding readers just how peculiar his life and his choices were by setting them in the context of the other great Virginians of his time.

This well-written and thoroughly engaging book will certainly appeal to readers interested in the history of 18th- and 19th-century Virginia, but also to those interested in the history of slavery and racism in America and in historical biography."

Many propertied white men of Jefferson's time regarded Africans as sub-humans, so that's probably why they did not believe they deserved the same equal rights as white men. Even The Great Emancipator believed Africans were an inferior people.

That sort of 18th and 19th century thinking is still embraced by people living in the 21st century and mostly the GOP. It is especially embraced by the malignant racists on Lisa's Skank Ranch who call the first lady a missing link and compare her to apes. Good thing those racists are dying out and are mocked for the pernicious slime that they are.

I beg to disagree with your ststement
"only one party is home to bigotry, mean spiritedness and willful ignorance."

The republicans have their share also. Granted the democrats own Jim Crowe and founding KKK but the republicans are not blameless.

I do agree that Sarah Palin was ill-suited to be a candidate and the viscous attack by the left was somewhat deserved.
Howard Dean seems to be out front and in the attack mode with his you need a college degree to run for office. Since he has a limited education seems like he is throwing stones.

Les Carpenter said...

Shaw Kenawe said...

Skud, let it go. You’ve used that tired old claim so many times here that it’s grown a white beard. It’s true that the Democratic Party was predominant in the south and in power at the same time Jim Crow laws were in effect and at the same time the KKK emerged. But your attempt to make it a solely a Democratic Party involvement is dishonest, insidious, and ignorant. The facts are, skud, that three Republican presidents, McKinley, Harding and Coolidge were members of the KKK.

Republican President Warren G. Harding was actually sworn into the Klan in a Klan ceremony conducted inside the White House by Imperial Wizard Colonel Simmons. Sure, having a BJ in the WH was sordid, but being inducted into an organization that tortured and murdered with impunity Americans with dark skin is, in any sane person’s opinion, worse. Far, far worse.

We’ve had enough of your attempts to slander only Democrats with this claim. You do it on a regular basis without acknowledging the fact that once a Democratic president, Lyndon Johnson, passed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, the south became solidly Republican voting bloc.

Let’s talk about another fact. You are a regular commenter on a blog (Lisa’s Smut Hut) that welcomes racists who link to photo-shopped images of Mr. and Mrs. Obama as gorillas and other primates and on which other commenters have called the First Lady and her daughters “the missing links,” and other such filthy racist claims. Those folks you choose to associate with are conservatives, not liberals. You and they see nothing disturbing about dehumanizing our first African-American president and his family in the same ways that people in the Jim Crow south did. And why should you care? You appear to be carrying on a long and dirty tradition from that region of the country, while trying to deflect responsibility for it onto the Democrats. That’s a dishonest and cowardly thing to do.

You choose to hang out with racist creeps. What does that make you?

"Were you not paying attention to the 2014 election which was a rejection of President Soetoro?"

Really? Since that election, President Obama has kicked the GOP's puny little asses, and his job approval numbers have gone up, up, up.

One third of the voting population--the lowest number of voters in an election in 70+ years-- rejected him in 2014. When he was re-elected in 2012, 100+ million people voted and he won a healthy 52% of that vote.

What has the GOP Congress done since then except make colossal asses of themselves. They've shown themselves to be a bunch of feckless loud-mouths who don't know how to govern and who only know how to suck up to foreign countries and their leaders, showing themselves, with a few exceptions, to be craven opportunistic political hacks.

You're welcome.

So so low voter turnout is an indication of the acceptance of obama's policies.

That must be the same rational as the vast majority of Americans side with his antisemitism, according to a non-biased poll by huffpost.

Using this kind of logic an overwhelming number of Americans do not like obamacare, this was by liberal and conservative polls not just huffpost.

skud: "So so low voter turnout is an indication of the acceptance of obama's policies."

No one here said that. That's your take-away, and it's flawed. All I claimed is that a very, very small number of voters voted in the 2014 elections. Hardly a mandate for anything compared with the HUGE number of people who voted in the 2012 election, which re-elected President Obama. The two cannot be compared.

skud: "That must be the same rational as the vast majority of Americans side with his antisemitism, according to a non-biased poll by huffpost."
