"Madness for Millions"

For five long miserable years I've wondered why seemingly normal people could possibly look at the malignant narcissist, Trump, and believe that he's just the sort of leader America needed.

It turns out that there's some sort of symbiotic craziness that keeps his cultists in thrall to the worst man to ever sit in the Oval Office.

This is very informative and gives an explanation of the sickness that is Trumpism:

From Scientific American: Forensic psychiatrist Bandy X. Lee explains the outgoing president’s pathological appeal and how to wean people from it

What attracts people to Trump? What is their animus or driving force?

The reasons are multiple and varied, but in my recent public-service book, Profile of a Nation, I have outlined two major emotional drives: narcissistic symbiosis and shared psychosis. Narcissistic symbiosis refers to the developmental wounds that make the leader-follower relationship magnetically attractive. The leader, hungry for adulation to compensate for an inner lack of self-worth, projects grandiose omnipotence—while the followers, rendered needy by societal stress or developmental injury, yearn for a parental figure. When such wounded individuals are given positions of power, they arouse similar pathology in the population that creates a “lock and key” relationship.

“Shared psychosis”—which is also called “folie à millions” [“madness for millions”] when occurring at the national level or “induced delusions”—refers to the infectiousness of severe symptoms that goes beyond ordinary group psychology. When a highly symptomatic individual is placed in an influential position, the person’s symptoms can spread through the population through emotional bonds, heightening existing pathologies and inducing delusions, paranoia and propensity for violence—even in previously healthy individuals. The treatment is removal of exposure.

Why does Trump himself seem to gravitate toward violence and destruction?

Destructiveness is a core characteristic of mental pathology, whether directed toward the self or others. First, I wish to clarify that those with mental illness are, as a group, no more dangerous than those without mental illness. When mental pathology is accompanied by criminal-mindedness, however, the combination can make individuals far more dangerous than either alone.

In my textbook on violence, I emphasize the symbolic nature of violence and how it is a life impulse gone awry. Briefly, if one cannot have love, one resorts to respect. And when respect is unavailable, one resorts to fear. Trump is now living through an intolerable loss of respect: rejection by a nation in his election defeat. Violence helps compensate for feelings of powerlessness, inadequacy and lack of real productivity.

Funniest thing I've read on the internet today:

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told Fox News that the insurrectionist mob’s repeated chants of “Hang Pence!” were “taken out of context by the radical left Democrat media.”

What a greasy little rodent Cruz is!

Anon, this is the BEST thing I've read on the internet today:

from Reuters:

“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cancelled his Europe trip at the last minute on Tuesday after Luxembourg's foreign minister and top European Union officials declined to meet him, European diplomats and other people familiar with the matter said”

I do agree with your title of this post. Madness of millions can refer to the cancel culture rant from the left. Melania is attacked by the media for her appearance and a magazine is attacked for showing kamala in sneakers. Trump issues an Instagram about how he supports the protests and is being impeached while kamala says the riots will continue and they should and she is praised.

Madam botox says come on down everything is fine then tears the SOTU address that mentions the virus and she is worshiped, trump says stop chinese travelers and he is excoriated.

The news media forms peoples opinions to agree with their bent and that has never been more obvious then now. Fortunately there are millions of Americans who can disagree with actions but have the intelligence to form their own opinions not let the media decide their views. Now it is if you worked for trump you don't deserve to have a job. The riots of the summer were just peaceful protests the attack on the capital was the worst thing that ever happened to this country. Of course the riots of the summer were aimed at businesses which are bad and the capital was the government which is good.

Nine days left until we have a new leader and the criticism against a sitting president stops.

Chillin. We were very close to a mass terrorist massacre at the Capitol incited by the American president. Trump is now a terrorist leader, the @GOP the party of domestic terrorism.

Do Republicans realize the time for calling on Trump to do anything is over?

He acted; an insurrection resulted. People died. There are either consequences for that, or there aren’t. There’s nothing to call on him to do, other than resign.
