Florida Sees Highest Rate of Children Hospitalized With COVID in U.S.

 Source: Newsweek

Florida is experiencing the highest rate of children hospitalized with COVID-19 across the U.S.

According to data from the CovKid project, which uses COVID-19 hospitalization numbers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as of August 7, Florida is reporting 8.1 children hospitalized with COVID-19 per 100,000 residents.

The number of children hospitalized with COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in Florida is the highest in the nation, according to the data.

Data from the project also shows that over the past seven days, Florida has reported 341 new hospital admissions among those aged 17 and younger, the most in the U.S.

Florida is also reporting the highest rate of COVID-19 hospitalizations among those ages 18 and 19. According to the data, as of August 7, Florida reported 20.6 hospitalizations per 100,000 residents in that age group.

While the data show that Florida is reporting the highest rate of children hospitalized with COVID-19, the federal government's hospital capacity data show that Texas is seeing the highest total number of children hospitalized with the virus.

As of August 11, healthdata.gov showed that Texas had 259 total pediatric patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the most in the U.S., while Florida followed with 194.

DeSantis is part of the political party that wants to overturn Roe v. Wade because they care so much about the lives of fetuses!

Apparently, the lives of  children out of the womb are not important to Trumpublicans like Governors DeSantis and Abbot.

Their ideology is more important than the lives of the children in their states. Those governors have presidential aspirations, and they need Trump's base to get to the White House. That means they have to stick to the stupid idea that wearing masks to save the lives of men, women, and children is useless and an infringement on their FREEDUMBS!

Meanwhile, children are dying.

Meanwhile, children are dying because these governors overruled the local school boards' and governments' mandates for masks.

Once upon a time, Republicans believed in local control in governing. But there are no more Republicans. What is left are TRUMPUBLICANS who are cultists in a DEATH CULT. They are stupid, foolish cultists whose allegiance is to a stupid, foolish cult leader who cares nothing for their health or well-being.

And they are sacrificing their children to this stupid cult leader.

Ms Shaw, That is a very interesting article but contains one flaw. Since school hasn't started in either state how is DeSantis decision to not require masks causing children in school to get covid. He never said the couldn't wear masks just that parents need to be parents and make the decision for their children instead of having the government dictate how children should be raised.

Texas has not started school either so not masking in school does not add to the cases. Letting thousands of people cross the border without being tested is a fact. We require those entering from Canada to prove they do not have covid but not from Mexico. Doesn't something seem to off with that logic?

Looks like you picked a good time to run from the heat because I see Boston is rather warm.

As you will see from this chart published by FloridaSmart, most Florida public schools opened August 10, with one or two as early as August 9, and Miami Dade county, August 23. But the majority of counties in Florida opened public schools on August 10.

So you're wrong in saying that schools in Florida haven't opened.

What DeSantis is doing is stupid, and 63% of the American people DO NOT agree with DeSantis's stupidity. 63% of the American people believe in mask mandates. DeSantis said he would deny salaries to school authorities who mandate masks. What happened to LOCAL CONTROL? which has always been a Republican value? DeSantis has presidential aspirations, and he'll need the Trump cultists to support him if he wants to be president. So he has to appeal to their stupidity and idiocies around mask wearing. And vaccines.

I just checked the school openings in Texas, and some schools opened on Aug. 9, while others will open at the end of the month.

Anyway, this is not about whether or not schools are opened, but about stupid Trumpian governors carrying about their political aspirations more than the health and welfare of children.

Both Florida and Texas hospitals are filling up with people sick with the Delta variant and the vast majority of those being hospitalized are UNVACCINATED idiots who put medical care personnel at risk because of their inane opposition to vaccines and mask wearing.

Just for your edification: The parts of America with the HIGHEST VACCINATION rates have the LOWEST INFECTIONS FROM COVID (I'm happy to state that the New England states are among the best).

The parts of America with the LOWEST VACCINATION rates are the states with the HIGHEST SUPPORT FOR donald j trump, and the highest rates of COVID infections. There seems to be a correlation there, eh?

You're wrong about people coming in from Mexico.

Forgot to post reference to majority of Americans supporting mask mandates (and vaccines).

Poll: Majorities support vaccine, mask mandates — but not Republicans

The new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll shows GOP voters shunning broadly popular measures to control the spread of the virus, which is spiking across the country.

A majority of voters support mandatory coronavirus vaccines and indoor mask-wearing requirements, according to a new Morning Consult/POLITICO poll that shows opposition to the requirements is chiefly limited to Republicans.

The survey also found that about half of all voters blame the new wave of infections that have sent numbers spiking equally on the unvaccinated and on political leaders opposed to mask-wearing and social-distancing mandates.

About one-fifth of voters said neither is responsible; 14 percent blamed the unvaccinated solely and another 7 percent targeted the politicians.

If you read the Trump cultists' blogs and news sites, you'll read that all of this is just plain hysteria, that COVID and the Delta variant is no more harmful than the flu, and that what is happening is nothing more than COVID mania that's raging across the US.

Here's one blog stating "Children are not dying of covid."

And here's an actual pediatric doctor's opinion below. Which is more valuable? A blogger's or an actual pediatric physician who is involved with COVID every day? Hmmmmm?

"David Kimberlin, MD, a pediatric infectious disease expert at the University of Alabama and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' (AAP) Committee on Infectious Diseases, said that "while we don't know if those data apply to children, the anecdotal information suggests it might."

"Across the South, where we have low vaccination rates, children's hospitals are experiencing many more cases than they did at the worst of the peak at the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, suggesting it's possible that Delta causes more severe disease in children," he told MedPage Today.

Even if the virus isn't more severe in kids, Kimberlin said, "we're still staring down the barrel of this gun because its hypertransmissibility is causing more pediatric infections than earlier versions did."

That's a particular concern as children in the South have returned or are starting to return to classrooms, he noted."

I believe the doctor, not the blogger.

Shaw Kenawe said...

So because lots of kids aren't dying of COVID, that proves the media is hysterical in its reporting?

Well, no! There isn't enough data to know for certain what the short and long term effects of the more transmissible Delta variant will do the children's health. That alone should concern all of us and want to keep children safe, i.e., wearing masks and getting vaccinated:

"At this time, it appears that severe illness due to COVID-19 is uncommon among children," the AAP report stated. "However, there is an urgent need to collect more data on longer-term impacts of the pandemic on children, including ways the virus may harm the long-term physical health of infected children, as well as its emotional and mental health effects."

During an Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) press briefing last week, Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, cautioned that it's difficult to tease apart severity data in general because increasing hospitalizations could just be the result of increasing cases due to Delta's greater transmissibility."

Believe the experts in medicine, not bloggers.

Shaw Kenawe said...

"Last week, Mark Kline, MD, chief physician at Children's Hospital New Orleans, told ABC News that the positivity rate in kids rose from 1% to about 20% over the last 30 days.

"We are hospitalizing record numbers of children," Kline said, adding that the majority are under 12 and can't yet be vaccinated.

In Alabama, Kimberlin noted that "our hospitals are close to complete capacity, and that includes children's hospitals in Mobile and Birmingham."

"I think the rate of increase we see in pediatric cases is truly alarming," he added. "We've seen a skyrocketing of cases in a very short period of time. It's Delta. It's hypertransmissible. Combine that with the fact that two-thirds of our population [in Alabama] are not vaccinated -- that's not even touching on the kids under 12 who are not able to be vaccinated -- and you have a recipe for disaster."

The above is NOT THE MEDIA becoming hysterical. What is in bold above is from actual pediatric doctors witnessing what is happening with children and COVID and its variants.

I believe the doctors and their alarming reports, not a blogger.

I'm old enough to remember when the GOP was aghast at what they called "statism", the propensity to believe Washington, or individual statehouses, imposing one size fits all solutions on their populations was a good thing.

Now across Florida and Texas not only are GOP Governors enacting statewide policies writ large, local control be damned.

How does anyone enamored with the GOP defend these views? And do these views mean the GOP is now on board with Washington dictating policy over the wishes of GOP controlled statehouses?

If you say “close the borders so unvaccinated people aren’t coming in, endangering Americans” while also saying you don’t criticize unvaccinated Americans (who are mostly the cause of the current situation) because “it’s their right”, then you can’t expect to be taken seriously.

Dave Miller said...

Paula... don't get drawn into that argument. Immigrants from the south are mostly being tested and if positive, treated at our border. In any event, the numbers of immigrants is so small in comparison to our Covid totals as to render any cause and effect, useless. Unless of course your desire is to score anti immigration points.

By the way Skud, the great majority of ppl entering the US from anywhere in the world, Mexico included, must show a negative covid test to even get on a US bound plane.

You state that we do not require ppl coming to the US from Mexico to be Covid free. Can you cite any link that supports your thesis?

I do note that you refrained from weighing in on the real subject of this post, GOP Governors in Texas and Florida making it illegal for local businesses, municipalities and school boards to mandate masks for people attending school, entering a small business and entering local government offices.

Why so quiet on that?

Gov. DeSantis wants everyone to believe that Florida's COVID19 deaths have something to do with the U.S. border.

Funny that his COVID numbers are three times higher than California's, which is actually on that border.

More gaslighting.

Dave Miller said...

Even as the day's news spirals out, we hear from the Dem Mayor of Laredo, TX that illegal immigrants are in fact being sent from the border areas of Texas to cities in the state and essentially being dumped on those city governments.

What the heck is the Biden admin doing? Besides this being flat out wrong to do, are they just unaware of the politics of this?

Now look, I get this is not specifically a problem of the Biden Admin. It's the problem of multiple admins and a general unwillingness of the US to work towards a comprehensive solution to a decades long issue.

But difficulty should not excuse bad, or even immoral actions as it relates to immigration. We elected the Biden Admin to solve problems. Past problems are not on them, continued problems are.

But none of this excuses the reality that we have governors of two states who do not believe government has a role to play as it relates to public health. Those governors do not believe we have a right to expect ppl to change behavior, don't believe private business has a right to determine whether their customers or employees should be vaxxed, whether schools should follow medical advice as it relates to masks and a host of other examples.

If their point, as they've expressed, is that Americans can be trusted to "do the right thing", why do we even bother with laws? I dare say there is not a law on the books that does not limit the rights and freedoms of some Americans.

How do these governors decide when it is alright to abridge those rights?

Bluebullamerica said...

Luckily, many school districts and cities here in Florida are just ignoring the moronic Trump wannabe and mandating masks. I swear these anti-mask anti-vax idiots have only just arrived on our planet. I couldn't send my kids to school until they'd had all their vaccines, including measles, small pox, whooping cough, mumps and I'm sure there were others that I've forgotten. When I was a kid, I had to have to polio vaccine before being allowed into school. It's not a freakin political issue, fools, it's a health issue and your worries about 'the big bad government' wanting to hurt you or put a chip inside you for (fill in the blank reason) is NOT a good enough reason to risk more kids getting sick and dying.
Desantis is quickly losing popularity here and stands a good chance of being defeated after one term just like his orange messiah. I'll be giving money and time to make sure that happens!
I was going to offer a counter to Skidmark's usual drivel but after reading it for the third time, I realized that it would be like trying to empty the ocean with a thimble. His usual clap-trap just even rise to the level of discussion anymore. Skid, you're dismissed....

As of Monday, Florida is averaging more than 20,000 new infections each day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Covid Data Tracker. The Florida Hospital Association announced on Tuesday that some 14,787 people are hospitalized and nearly 90 percent of the state’s intensive care unit beds are filled. Hospitalizations are now up 145 percent from Florida’s previous peak in July 2020, according to the group.

skudrunner said...

But Ms Shaw, the data used is from August 7th and that was still before school started.

A new Monmouth University poll released Monday morning shows only a little more than half of Americans support “instituting, or reinstituting, face mask and social distancing guidelines in your state.” The split is 52 percent in favor vs. 46 percent opposed.

While we don't know and suggests is really weak even for a leftist. Why don't we say while we don't know is 35% of the 200000 people who crossed the border last month had covid anecdotal information suggests they might.

Rev, Take a trip to some of the towns in AZ, gila bend come to mind and midland Texas and you will see the error of your post.

Paula, everyone should get a shot but many feel it is not proven including union nurses in the colonies.

skud: "A new Monmouth University poll released Monday morning shows only a little more than half of Americans support “instituting, or reinstituting, face mask and social distancing guidelines in your state.”

That's because of this (as of 10 hours ago at this writing):

Massachusetts
Doses distributed to state: 10,141,180
Doses administered: 9,243,823
Percentage of distributed vaccines that have been administered: 91.15

We've done a great job.

I really don't want to get into an argument about whether or not people should wear masks and socially distance themselves during a plague and the spread of a variant that is more transmissible and that affects children.

At this point, I've given up any hope that the governors of red states will do the right thing to protect the health of their citizens instead of the stupid political thing that will get them the nomination for the Trumpublican Party for president.

Massachusetts has a REPUBLICAN governor -- he's NOT a Trumpublican, he's NEVER supported Trump and his insanities -- and Massachusetts has done an excellent job of getting people vaccinated.

Massachusetts is also the most educated state in the country, so there's that. We believe in the science of dealing intelligently with a pandemic, NOT in the politics, like the red states.

I'm at the point where I'm actually saying let Darwinism take its course with those who believe their FREEDUMBS are being abrogated by having the gummint telling those folks to get vaccinated against a plague.

I was a child during the polio crisis, and NO ONE, not one American that I read of from that era suspected the government of taking away their FREEDUMBS by asking them to vaccinate against that horrible disease! I couldn't get into school unless I was vaccinated against a number of diseases.

What the hell is different now? Did Americans get stupid over the last 40 years? I appears so. And their politicians are even stupider!

The folks defending the antics of the new GOP (Trumpism on steroids) are doing so precisely because THEY ARE the new statists).

Yeah Dave, at almost 70 I certainly remember a day when repubs actually served a extremely important purpose. They maintained a balance to the more liberal/progressive instincts of the dems. It worked well untill 1980.

Now, the GOP is more representative of deeply statist/fascist political parties than a party in the world's greatest modern democratic republic.

For me, the GD party of tRump and its all its adherents can go screw itself.

Skud, I take your point that school hadn't started when the covid numbers for kids were published. Cases among children has exploded before school has started and now DeSantis has declared it illegal to mandate masks. Now you can send your kid into an enclosed space with 30 other kids. They'll leave it up to Florida man to decide if his kid should mask up. What could go wrong?

From the Mother Ship:

No one should get the vax. It is a dangerous gene therapy tool and it has a very narrow spectrum of coverage, and coverage is transient, meaning months at most. It neither prevents infection nor transmission. According to the drug company and CDC, it results in a milder course and less danger of hospitalization and death…..but when you look at the data, the number needed to treat to prevent one death is about 6000 fully vaccinated people.

I had it in December 2019 and was hospitalized. Of course that was before we knew it was COVID and/or that we were meant to be afraid of it (I was tested for antibodies in July 2020 and my body was teeming with them so that’s how we know it WAS COVID.) COVID IS real, but it’s not really that dangerous when it gets down to it.

We ARE all going to die, after all no one gets out of this alive, but we aren’t all going to die from COVID. They want us to focus on the fear so they can tear down our liberty and our very country. I think it is a combination of rules: 5, 9, 10, and 13.

Tell that to the 600,000+ Americans who've died from it and to the thousands who have lasting medical problems because of it.

And tell that to the family who just lost their 5 year old!

I remember the Mother Ship's crew losing their sh*t over the two deaths from Eboli when Obama was president, and those two who lost their lives got infected outside the country!

"Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare officials confirmed Thursday one of their pediatric coronavirus patients has died.

Officials said the patient was younger than five-years-old and died within the last month. Because of patient privacy concerns they couldn’t give further details. During an online media availability, pediatric critical care specialist, Dr. Thomas Truman, said as the Delta variant spreads he’s seeing more intense impacts for children.

“Like the rest of the state of Florida we’ve seen a significant and worrisome increase in pediatric COVID patients presenting to the hospital and indeed admitted. Just in the last 2 months, we’ve seen more cases than we have in the prior five months combined. They tend to be sicker and require more help and more medial therapy,” Truman said.

Truman said he’s also concerned about a multi-system inflammatory syndrome that sometimes impacts kids after they recover from the coronavirus. He said with more young people testing positive, he expects to see more of those cases. He’s urging everyone who can, to get vaccinated and says universal masking is an important part of making kids safer."

From Dave's link:

"Just two days into the academic year, 440 students in Palm Beach County, Florida, were told to go into quarantine because of COVID-19 cases at their schools, reports CBS' Palm Beach affiliate WPEC.

As of Thursday, there were 131 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 26 employees and 105 students, according to the district's COVID-19 dashboard. The cases have been confirmed in 60 of the district's facilities and K-12 schools.

The number of COVID cases spiked dramatically within the first two days of school. On Tuesday, when classes started, there were just five confirmed cases among the district's staff members."

But in Bloglandia:

"Children are not dying of covid. How do we know? If even one child were dying a day (less than the pediatric death rate during an average flu season) the Infotainment Media Complex would be blaring it in flaming red letters.

Much of America is in the grips of a panicked confusion that is a direct result of contradictory information from the government, inflammatory rhetoric from politicians and their minions, and sensationalist reporting full of alarming modifiers and imprecise language. All of it designed to keep the huddled masses scared and tuned in.

So they're willing to accept death rates for kids as long as those rates a less than for average seasonal flu. What they DON'T say is that the COVID variant that the kids are getting does more damage than does the average seasonal flu. That's according to pediatric doctors seeing these kids in Tallahassee, Florida.

These bloggers and trumpers are organically unable to concede ANYTHING! Most of all, that wearing masks, social distancing, and getting THE VAX! would have done much to mediate the variant and SAVE THE LIVES OF MORE AMERICANS!

He is the most read Latino columnist in the country. He spreads his disgust equally among the political classes and his critics are usually left to grasp at non existent straws as his writing is factual and usually on point.
