Tragic Afghanistan

UPDATE:

The U.S. has reached a deal with the Taliban to ensure that evacuations from Kabul's airport can take place without interference from the group, according to a report by The Associated Press.

The deal was reached in talks in Doha, Qatar, between senior Taliban officials and Gen. Frank McKenzie. The two sides apparently agreed to a "deconfliction mechanism” in which operations at the airport in Kabul are permitted to continue without interference from the Taliban.

McKenzie reportedly told the Taliban that any interference would be met with force from the U.S. military, who would move to defend the airport if necessary.

Featured as part of a section titled "President Trump Is Bringing Peace In The Middle East," the page described how the former U.S. president had "continued to take the lead in peace talks."

The page also claims that "while President Trump has championed peace, Joe Biden has taken the lead in pushing for endless wars."

Abdul Ghani Baradar, the co-founder of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the organization's current political chief, was released from a Pakistani jail at the request of the US while Trump was in office.

Afghans have to decide how they want to live with each other and how much they participate in international community.

When there has been no foreign intervention, they have as a society managed to fail at civility towards each others and outsiders.

Why would 300,000 trained Afghan soldiers lay down their arms against 75,000 Taliban forces?

If the Afghan soldiers had no interest in saving their own country and their own people, there is no reason others should continue to shed their blood to help them.

Trump's OWN WORDS TO TALIBAN:

"It is a pleasure to talk to you.... I understand that you are fighting for your homeland. We have been there for 19 years... and withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan now is in the interest of everyone."

TRUMP:

“I started the process, all the troops are coming home, they (Biden) couldn’t stop the process. 21 years is enough. They (Biden) couldn’t stop the process, they (Biden) wanted to but couldn’t stop the process.” - Trump, 1 month ago

DONT YOU DARE TO BLAME TRUMP FOR THIS

To "Natalie,"

No one's blaming Trump. We're just showing that Trump is in complete agreement with pulling our military out of Afghanistan. So it is curious why the Trump cultists are losing their minds (what's left of their minds, that is) over President Biden carrying out Trump's plans in Afghanistan.

Remember what we did to the Kurds? We have a terrible track record when it comes to keeping promises of safety and refuge to civilians who risks their lives and those of their families to help our military, naively believing that they will receive special immigrant status at the end. American certainly is exceptional- in the art of BS.

Since Biden's mentor blamed everything on bush for two years we can expect him to follow that lead.
Pulling out with no plan is turning into a S--- Show and is following the administrations way of doing things look at the border. He shuts down the pipeline while approving russia's, closes exploration on federal land now asks the middle east to produce more. It is all about covid which is increasing under his watch. Not a positive sign for the U.S.

Dave Miller said...

Well Natalie... it seems the facts are getting in the way of your myopic views. This was not solely President Biden's decision. The Trump Administration had already made the decision and signed an agreement with the Taliban for us to leave Afghanistan.

It's just a fact. As is the reality that President Trump proposed bringing our enemies, the Taliban, to Camp David on 9/11/202 to celebrate the signing of this agreement.

In case you struggle, as I am sure Skud will later, it is a fact, as proven by the following document released by the Trump State Department, that the Trump Admin negotiated with terrorists breaking a cardinal rule of the US, most famously annunciated by the Reagan Admin.

The Trump Agreement with the Taliban

Is the Biden Admin blame free in this disaster? Of course not, but any critique that absolves Fmr Presidents Trump, Obama and Bush, is the product of unserious people, only interested in trying to score cheap partisan points.

Why we continue to believe we are the "indispensable nation" when it comes to essentially small regional conflicts is beyond me. And why anyone continues to trust us, except perhaps the Europeans, I'll never understand.

Trump blames Obama for lack of coronavirus tests: ‘I don’t take responsibility at all’

Dave Miller said...

Skud... buy a vowel...

You must have missed this when I posted it on another thread in response to your uninformed view on the border... Try again. Conservative writer Ruben Navarette, no fan of the Dems and an expert on the border and immigration issues calls out people like who are trying to score political points with the issue...

Your issues he says are just "propaganda... a go to lie"

The exit from Afghanistan is indeed a shit show. But folks like you need to stay focused, stick to facts as opposed to talking points and read a little more as opposed to spending hours watching OAN, FOX News and Newsmax.

Natalie, Ray, Skud, Dave

There's plenty of blame to go around for both the Democrats and Republicans. Why the military withdrawal is such a disaster is a mystery to me. Can't we even do that correctly? There was plenty of time to get our allies out of there safely. How did we let this happen?

Why is Trump bellowing about this and calling for President Biden to resign, when this was his plan to get out of Afghanistan? Trump is doing his usual grandstanding antics to whip up his base. That's why.

Trump is on record dozens of times calling for the U.S. to leave Afghanistan and calling it STUPID for us to be there. Would he have done a better job? We don't know, but we can look at how he handled the COVID pandemic to extrapolate. Trump had all the necessary tools and treasure to handle the pandemic and he didn't. Why would anyone think Trump would have done anything better than the Biden administration. I don't.

As the British would say, this is a "cock-up" of terrible proportions. But everyone involved must bear the responsibility for it, starting with Bush,,Jr., Obama, Trump, and finally Biden.

Excuse me but didn't Trump, that a twice-impeached one-term president who greenlit the attempted genocide of our Kurdish allies in Syria by his family friend Erdogan—a *butcher* -— didn't he just call for Joe Biden to resign from office for executing precisely the withdrawal from Afghanistan he promised?

Help me out here...

After Sunday It's Even More Clear Biden Was Right

Americans, or at least the commentating classes, are watching aghast as events unfold in Afghanistan. Some are second-guessing the wisdom of withdrawal – after all, how hard is it to maintain a few thousand soldiers there permanently? Others are taking the more comfortable position of saying yes, we had to leave but this just wasn’t the right way. I must be the only person in America who is having exactly the opposite reaction. The more I see the more I’m convinced this was the right decision – both what I see on the ground in Afghanistan and perhaps even more the reaction here in the United States.

It is crystal clear that the Afghan national army and really the Afghan state was an illusion. It could not survive first contact with a post-US military reality. As is so often the case in life – with bad investments, bad relationships – what we were doing there was staying to delay our reckoning with the consequences of the reality of the situation.

That’s a bad idea.

But as I’ve said in other posts over the last two days, we knew this part. What has been deeply revealing to me is the American response. And here I mean to say the most prominent media and political voices. It’s true this is quicker than I’d figured – not that I’d given the precise timing a lot of thought. And it seems to be quicker than the White House figured. But by a month? Three months? Does that matter? I don’t see why. If anything, given the outcome, quicker is better – since a protracted fall is necessarily a bloodier fall. But what the reaction has demonstrated to me is the sheer depth of denial. The inability to accept the reality of the situation. And thus the excuse making. Sen. Maggie Hassan’s press release below is a painfully good example of that. So is this article by in The Atlantic by George Packer. Virtually everything Richard Engel has been writing on Twitter for the last 24 hours. All so much the cant of empire. But more than this, far more important than this, simply unwise.

Shaw asked regarding the pull out... "Can't we even do that correctly?"

Apparently not. And I am sure the GOP will join Dems in voting to immediately cut funding to a US Military that cannot even evacuate a military base. For years the GOP has used incompetence in government as an excuse to defund programs.

But I am guessing that this will simply elicit more howls to fund these clowns even more.

skudrunner said...

Ms. Shaw and Rev, We should have never been in Afghanistan in the first place just as we shouldn't be in Iraq. Our "government intelligence" which is an oxymoron had no clue what the culture was in either country and that is what we are fighting.

All of the past four presidents have said we should get out of Afghanistan but it is poor joey's handlers who blew this big time. Lets tell the He gave a timeline and did nothing to prepare for the withdrawal. No plan on removing American employees, no plan to transport Afgan's who assisted us an now we are sending back more troops. Doesn't our government study history like leaving Vietnam.

Shaw, joey didn't make this decision as is shown by the attention while it is happening. He did have press conferences explaining his decision, wait I may be mistaken with that statement. We could never have won in Afghanistan just as we can't in Iraq. Now it is the citizens of those countries, especially women and children, who will suffer because of our incompetent leadership.

My gosh, those Mothership clowns are already calling this Benghazi… took about 10 minutes. Said Biden should have know now was not a good time and we should’ve waited til winter.

Except these terms were negotiated by Pres Trump. How do those dolts sleep at night?

Dave "My gosh, those Mothership clowns are already calling this Benghazi… took about 10 minutes."

Those are the same folks who called what happened on January 6, 2021, "a little bit of rowdiness."

I don't take them or their opinions seriously. Ever.

Rev, Don't know where you get your information but the people n charge have a differing view.

Unprecedented numbers of known or suspected terrorists have crossed the southern border in recent months, the outgoing Border Patrol chief said.

Ray Cranston said...

I’m old enough to remember when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and everyone talked about how they’d have their own Vietnam now.

Too bad nobody remembered that when our leaders decided to invade. Of course, even then the decision seemed more like an emotional response to 9/11 rather than a reasoned response to international terrorism.

Not surprising that the Afghan army folded and our allied warlords threw in the towel when they realized the Pentagon and the CIA would no longer be financing them—with money provided by American taxpayers.

It’s easy to criticize Biden at this point, but where’s the criticism of those who created the whole mess in the first place.

Shaw Kenawe said...

And here's why President Biden is a better president than Trump ever, ever was:

Former guy on covid: "I take no responsibility at all."

President Biden on Afghanistan: "I am President of the United States, and the buck stops with me."

So I don't quite get where you are coming from.

I've always been pretty upfront where I get my info and in fact, included links for you to consider.

The better question is from where do you get your information? Because most of what you spout about the border is, as Navarette says, propaganda and part of the ongoing lies conservatives and the GOP tell themselves about a situation the are not even close to understanding.

FACTS:

Trump:
-Cut the Afghan government out of peace negotiations.
-Wanted to bring Taliban to Camp David on 9/11.
-Sprang the Taliban co-founder from prison with 5,000 others.
Reduced our forces from 9,000 to 2,500.

Dotard negotiated a ceasefire to help his re-election chances. If Biden had gone back on that deal the ceasefire would have ended. And another surge of thousands of troops would be necessary (with likely accompanying deaths of US soldiers). The choice was to surge or pull out. Dotard set this up... so YES, I blame him.

This mess could have been predicted by rookies. Five years ago, or fifteen years from now; whenever we left the country the Taliban would take over and it would be very ugly. In fact, we haven't seen the worst yet. The mass murders are yet to come.
It's impossible to eliminate evil from the world; although that was what Bush said he was going to do.

skudrunner said...

Rev, No I am not fluent in spanish, I wish I was. I do live 50 miles from the border so have a first hand knowledge of the situation. As a country we have avoided immigration from the southern border for decades and we still refuse to do anything about it. Bush tried and was stopped by his own party, obama came up with a pass the buck program, trump tried to strong arm immigration and biden is ignoring it.

If you haven't driven the border you should. It is not a good situation for anyone but the smugglers.
