"Why is this happening?"

BREAKING: "Ukraine’s Jewish community has announced that the 91-year-old Holocaust survivor Vanda Obiedkova perished while sheltering in a Mariupol basement. As she lay dying, freezing and pleading for water, she wanted to know only one thing: 'Why is this happening?' ”

Lawrence Tribe:

"Why? Because Putin is a butcher, a war criminal, and a pitiless monster with boundless ambition and a lust for power and a yearning for empire."

Why is this happening in America?

The Trumpublican Party, Donald J. Trump, has nothing but praise for Putin:

"Former President Donald Trump...described Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine as 'genius' and 'savvy,' praising his onetime counterpart for a move that has spurred sanctions and universal condemnation from the U.S. government and its trans-Atlantic allies. 'I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius.’ Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine — Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful,' Trump said in a radio interview with 'The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show.' 'He used the word ‘independent’ and ‘we’re gonna go out and we’re gonna go in and we’re gonna help keep peace.’ You gotta say that’s pretty savvy.' ”

The Tucker Carlson anti-democracy show is the most popular cable news program in America. Here he is telling his viewers -- Trump cultists -- that he supports Russia against a democratic Ukraine:

Tucker: "Why do I care what is going on in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia? I'm serious. Why shouldn't I root for Russia? Which by the way I am."

And here are some of the folks who support the guy who lost the 2020 election:

We'll never forget who the Trumpublicans supported during Ukraine's fight to keep its independence from the war criminal and butcher of men, women, and children.

And we won't forget who President Zelensky thanked for supporting his country in their darkest hours:

I’m grateful to @POTUS & 🇺🇸 people for the leadership in supporting the people of Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression. This help is needed today more than ever! It saves the lives of our defenders of democracy and freedom and brings us closer to restoring peace in 🇺🇦.

You can either be an American or a Republscumbag, at this point. There is no other option, sadly. The GOP used to be about fiscal responsibility and cooperation with our allies. Now? Now they are opposed to freedom and desire for fascism and taking away rights of others. I'm glad I can see the exit sign from here. I wouldn't want to see the end result of their trashing of America.

As the world sits and watches the atrocities in Ukraine the left continues their obsession with everything trump. Good job turning someone grieving to trump because that takes a certain kind of hatred.

Skud... Imagine back just a few years... Can you imagine Fmr President Clinton singing the praises of Saddam Hussein? How about Obama singing the praises of foreign leaders mutilating civilians? How about President Reagan singing the praises of Ferdinand Marcos as he butchered his own people?

Of course not.

Because while all those presidents made mistakes and didn't get everything right, the understood the role of former presidents was in a crisis to back the current guy, or at least, keep quiet.

Trump is a terrible person. He's effectively giving aid and comfort to an enemy of the US, a dictator working to crush dissent and democracy and a fellow liar.

Hate is strong word, but mark me down as disgusted. A feeling I never had for Bush, Reagan or any past US President. Because they at least had some honor.

Trump has none and right now, is due none.

You seem uncomfortable, Skud, being reminded how an ex-American president actually praised an anti-democratic, anti-liberty war criminal who slaughters civilian men women and children. But that’s the reality of who the current Trumpublican Party adores and wants to see in the White House again. Fact. His many supporters in Congress and governorships in this country would want him to lead this country again, even after the fact of his support for a murderous, anti-liberty war criminal.

You don’t like to be reminded of that and I understand your discomfort, but that’s a Fact. Donald Trump is on the side of a killer and destroyer of democracy. And I for one never want him to degrade our country by serving in any capacity in our government ever again. And I will continue to remind people here and on other social media of who he admires.

Trump is a danger to America.

Anon @4:39,

Trump didn’t butcher people nor invade a sovereign country, but he showed admiration and support for Putin, which the Russians used as propaganda to further their illegal war against Ukraine. And for that Trump’s name will forever live in infamy.

I may be way off here, I don't think so, but tRump given the power putin has would very likely engage in similar activitiesna.

The tRumpers will adore their orange shitstain until the day they die no doubt. And for this reason tRump will remain a threat to our democracy until he dies and maybe longer.

There you go again, comparing Trump to Hitler and the Holocaust. And lets not forget putting American soldiers in Europe is what stopped Hitler and now we refuse to do that and watch the Vanda Obiedkova's of today die by another butcher.

NYTimes, By Yara Bayoumy and Adrian J. Rivera

Ms. Bayoumy is the world and national security editor for Opinion. Mr. Rivera is an editorial assistant in Opinion.

"The conventional wisdom is that Americans, scarred by the country’s involvement in wars for the last two decades, are by and large done with all that. When Russia invaded Ukraine, there was never a question of whether President Biden would send in U.S. troops to assist the Ukrainians. This wasn’t just because of a war-weary public: Pitting two nuclear powers against each other was incomprehensible.

But in our latest Times Opinion focus group, 10 Americans — representing a range of political parties, ideologies and backgrounds — were clearly struggling with what the United States could or should do about the war and the daily evidence of brutality that increasingly alarms them. They had thought a lot about leadership, grit and hard decisions, especially as shown by Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, and about how much they are willing to sacrifice, financially and otherwise, as the fallout from the war and Western sanctions continue.

None of the participants brought up Ukraine when we asked our first question, about their main concerns regarding America today. But when asked how much they cared about the war, on a scale of one to 10, eight participants gave scores of five or greater. There was an overwhelming sense that “America must do something” but not to the point of direct military involvement — at least unless Vladimir Putin resorted to a nuclear weapon. It reflected the unease and murkiness of what Americans think the country’s role in the world today should be."

... at least unless Vladimir Putin resorted to a nuclear weapon.

It's a fine fix self interest and greed has gotten humankind into isn't it? How likely is it we're smart enough, possess enough conmpassion and love for our planet and ourselves to avoid eventual destruction?,

After the disgraceful withdrawal from Afghanistan Putin feels embolden because there is nothing the US is going to do except whine about Russia to no avail. The current president followed his mentors stance on russia in that they are a non entity and look where that has gotten the world. We have gone from a respected super power to a woke nation. Good job.

Completely simplistic and naive take on what happened in Ukraine. Skid doesn’t do facts or informed opinion, just right wing talking points.
