We wonder if Dr. Carson...

has "evolved" from his recent position on using 17-week aborted fetal tissue for research?  But wait, Dr. Carson doesn't believe in Evolution, so maybe he can't evolve from his experimental work with fetal tissue

The Huffington Post reports:

WASHINGTON -- Famed neurosurgeon Ben Carson says that most medical research can be conducted without using fetal tissue, which has been in the news recently after a series of secretly taped but edited videos showed Planned Parenthood officials discussing how to legally provide aborted tissue to researchers. He has called the benefits of such research "over promised," and has said the videos have made him wonder "how far we have drifted in terms of our humanity."

But according to Dr. Jen Gunter, an OB-GYN and pain medicine physician, the Republican presidential candidate published a study with three other colleagues in 1992 that described using “human choroid plexus ependyma and nasal mucosa from two fetuses aborted in the ninth and 17th week of gestation.”

Fetal tissue has been used for a variety of purposes, including research on an Ebola vaccine, blindness and HIV.

Ben Carson did research on 17 week fetal tissue
POSTED BY DR. JEN GUNTER ⋅
AUGUST 12, 2015 ⋅

Dr. Ben Carson, GOP nominee hopeful, told Fox’s Megyn Kelly that “There’s nothing that can’t be done without fetal tissue” and that the benefits of fetal tissue have been “over promised” and the results have “very much under-delivered.”

Carson also said, “At 17 weeks, you’ve got a nice little nose and little fingers and hands and the heart’s beating. It can respond to environmental stimulus. How can you believe that that’s just a[n] irrelevant mass of cells? That’s what they want you to believe, when in fact it is a human being.”

Dr. Carson, like everyone, is entitled to an opinion no matter how wrong, What he says doesn’t change the fact that fetal tissue plays a vital role in medical research. For example it is being used to develop a vaccine against Ebola. Many researchers depend on fetal tissue to understand and hopefully develop treatment for a myriad of conditions from blindness to HIV. Without fetal tissue neurosciences research, something essential for the development of neurosurgical techniques, would be far less developed.

Dr. Carson should be intimately aware of this fact. While opining on the uselessness of fetal tissue research to Megyn Kelly, Dr. Carson neglected to mention his own paper Colloid Cysts of the Third Ventricle: Immunohistochemical evidence for nonneuropithelial differentiation published in Hum Pathol 23:811-816 in 1992. The materials and methods describe using “human choroid plexus ependyma and nasal mucosa from two fetuses aborted in the ninth and 17th week of gestation.”

Yes, Dr. Ben Carson has done research on fetal tissue and published his findings. His name is on the paper so that means he had a substantive role in the research and supports the methods and findings.

**********

Just recently, the Tea-Pee-ers went crazy over finding out that Hillary Rodham Clinton supported Margaret Sanger.

Now that we know Dr. Ben Carson supported, did research and published the findings on 17-week fetuses, will they clutch their pearls, and drop to their fainting couches or, more likely, give some other excuse for his two-faced hypocrisy?

I think we know the answer.

So does this mean only democrats can "evolve". The current leader has "evolved" on several of his beliefs but I guess he is allowed to.

Is it not considered racist to support a group who was formed by a racist, Sanger, who's reason for promoting abortions was to develop a superior race.

PP does a lot of good things but to use taxpayer money to fund abortions should be off the table. Do you want your taxes, providing you pay any, to go to the chamber of commerce or the small business association. Of course you don't because you stand against them so why should taxpayer money go to pay for abortions if someone is against them.

Of course.
But he says nothing about the nature of the research that depends on fetal cells.

It's something they feel uncomfortable debating honestly, out in the open.
So much less complicated to get the Teabags in a lather with manipulated videos.

Such a parcel of rogues.
Meanwhile, I wish I understood what went on between Ailes and La Trump.
La trump seems to have more going for him than we knew.

Thanks for the recipe for the Parmesan buttered popcorn. I'm going to make a lot of it because this election cycle is turning out to be the most entertaining in my memory. Dr. Carson is a bit of a hypocrite...well not a bit, a big hypocrite. But he says what the loonies on the far right want to hear, thus his popularity with the delusional. He won't be president either.

skud: "So does this mean only democrats can "evolve". The current leader has "evolved" on several of his beliefs but I guess he is allowed to."

Yes, Mr. Obama has evolved and the loonies on the right went berserk over it. That's what my post is about and what you didn't get. Obama evolves = bad; Carson evolves = good.

skud: "Is it not considered racist to support a group who was formed by a racist, Sanger, who's reason for promoting abortions was to develop a superior race."

How much do you actually know in detail about Sanger? Probably not much.Go educate yourself.

skud: "PP does a lot of good things but to use taxpayer money to fund abortions should be off the table."

This statement is a perfect example of the ignorance that's rampant in the far right TPer's world. NO TAX PAYER MONEY EVER GOES TO PP FOR ABORTIONS. Are TPers allergic to facts?

Right-wing media are trumpeting the myth that Planned Parenthood uses federal funds for abortion services to prop up Congressional Republicans' attempt to defund the women's health organization, despite the fact that it's been unlawful for federal money to support abortion for nearly 40 years.

skud: "Do you want your taxes, providing you pay any, to go to the chamber of commerce or the small business association. Of course you don't because you stand against them so why should taxpayer money go to pay for abortions if someone is against them."

There is so much stupid in that comment. Please try to inform yourself before you come here and look silly.

Thanks.

"On the campaign trail in Manchester, New Hampshire, Carson told CNN his research simply used the tissue from aborted fetuses that was made available to him.

"We have banked material in the pathology lab from people from every age -- from day 1 of concept to 120 years told. Those specimens are available for people who want to do comparisons," Carson said. "To not use the tissue that is in a tissue bank, regardless of where it comes from, would be foolish. Why would anybody not do that?"

Why? If you're morally consistent, you would not do that. But Carson is not morally consistent on this issue or on the issue of government helping those who are in need. He received all kinds of federal government help as a young man and a student, then he tells other minorities to make it on their own. He's a perfect example of the "I got mine; screw you" Republican.

You are so correct, Skippy's Mom. Look at this hypocrisy from Dr. Ben:

Welfare Recipient Ben Carson Deserved His Welfare But Nobody Else Deserves Theirs

Looks like Ben is blowing smoke

He isn't even a very good liar. That will hurt him in this field.

Dr. Ben was also for the individual mandate (but he evolved).

"DR. CARSON: Well, you’re hitting at the crux of the matter here, because — and, again, I’ll keep harping on the same topic, because — a good healthcare provider and a patient — and what we’ve done is we’ve insinuated all of these regulators into that relationship with the proclamation that they have a much better and saner approach to health care than your physician would have. And I think there’s the rub. And what we really, in my opinion, should be looking for are ways to reduce the cost — and it comes back down to a cost issue when it comes to access — reduce the cost to a level where people can afford their own health care. And then, very much like they do in Scandinavia, it would not then be unreasonable to require that people own healthcare insurance.

That's what the ACA does. Thank you Dr. Ben for agreeing on the concept. Too bad you had to evolve to get the TPers to love you.

HERE IT IS.

Ms Shaw,

You cannot be that naive. If taxpayer money goes to support PPH than it frees up money to fund abortions. No one says money should not go to support those in need but for those able to work but choosing to not and live off the government handouts is a totally different situation.
There are plenty of jobs available just not enough people to take them, at least that is what the government says with their low unemployment rates, or don't you believe that drivel?

Shaw Kenawe said...

Here's Dr. Ben's on keeping abortion legal (but he evolved).

"Carson's views on abortion appear to have long been complicated. In 1992, he appeared in an ad encouraging Maryland voters to oppose a law that would effectively keep abortions legal in the state if the Supreme Court overturned or weakened Roe v. Wade. He later appeared at a pro-abortion activist press conference disavowing the ad, saying he didn't realize he was making a political statement.

So perhaps Carson simply evolved on the issue? That's what Carson campaign aide Armstrong Williams said before Carson weighed in."

For a guy who doesn't "believe" in Evolution, he sure does a lot of evolving himself.

Carson's opinions matter? Yeah right, maybe to the Tea Party, the Rethuglicans, and to the low information voters, but not to me.

Planned Parenthood controversy, another crop of fake outrage. A bunch of undercover film makers with an agenda and a splicing machine, bigoted imbeciles paid to sell a dishonest film to citizens, in the name of Rethugs and asshats like Trump, all funded by the Kochroach brothers fake activists and propaganda merchants like Rupert Murdoch. Getting rid of PP is the new stupid.

Jerry Critter said...

Skud,
What makes you think that eliminating federal, funding from Planned Parenthood will cause them to stop abortion services? Their abortion services are already funded from other sources. More likely, they will just reduce the services that are funded by federal money, many of which help prevent unwant pregnancies. Let us not forget, unwanted pregnancies among the poor cost the government a lot of money.

Craig said...

One third of PP's funding comes from state and federal govt., about $500M. That money goes to contraception, treating STD's and cancer screenings. Of course cutting off PP will result in more women wanting or needing abortions. Skud thinks all money is fungible so I expect the outraged R congress to cut off the $3.1B annual aid to Israel. You're naive if you think that aid doesn't free up money to provide every women in Israel between the ages of 20 and 40 a govt. paid for abortion.

This must be the last straw for God, no more Hand of Protection for you. Shouldn't Righteous Republicans follow suit?

Good point, Craig.

The attack by the TGOP on PP is another insight into their anti-women crusade. They're not just against abortion, but Santorum and Huckabee, and others like them, would limit a woman's access to birth control, the very thing that would decrease abortions.

Santorum said birth control is "just wrong," and Huckabee calls government subsidized b.c., getting something free from "Uncle Sugar."

It's no wonder the majority of American women do not support the TGOP. And the recent insults about women by Donald "She Had Blood Coming From Wherever" Trump only reinforces the fact that the TGOP is anti-women.

Jerry Critter said...

The way to prevent abortions is to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. You do that with early sex education, available birth control, and empowerment and reinforcement of women's rights, not by making abortions illegal or by removing federal funding.

If outlawing behavior worked, we would have no need for prisons.

Dr. Carson, like everyone, is entitled to an opinion no matter how wrong, ,,,

My only question for anyone, or everyone is this, is there ever a point when it becomes wrong to abort a fetus and use fetal tissue for research? If so when in your opinion would that occur?

My own position can be found HERE.

Ben Carson should stick to surgery and what he knows about that instead of making stupid statements he knows nothing about:

"Carson has recently made several comments reflecting his opposition to Planned Parenthood. Appearing on Fox News' “Your World with Neil Cavuto” on Wednesday, Carson said, “One of the reasons you find most of their clinics in black neighborhoods is so that you can find ways to control that population.”

Dr. Carson doesn't deal in facts:

Claim that Most Abortion Clinics Are Located in Black or Hispanic Neighborhoods Is False

Background

Antiabortion activists often claim that most abortion clinics are located in predominantly black or Hispanic neighborhoods. However, this claim—offered as supposed proof that abortion providers “target” minority women—is false.

Carson should stick to what he knows, neonatal surgery. He makes a fool of himself when he makes statements that are wrong and that show his ignorance. The Tea Party loves him because he's a right wing African American, but his ignorance on this subject is shameful. He should educate himself before he gives his opinion. It's not difficult to do, even for a brain surgeon.

Planned Parenthood investigations coming up empty

But like Benghazi,Benghazi,Benghazi this will continue to be the raw meat the clown car dangles for the base.
Every single state and a couple dozen Trey Goudy congressional investigations can come up empty and they will still be pushing the doctored tapes.

Another reason why doctor ben needs to stick to medicine...his political smarts are failing and it looks like pulls information out of somewhere other than his medical knowledge.

"It brings up a very important issue and that is do those black lives matter. The number one cause of death for black people is abortion," Carson said. "I wonder if maybe some people might at some point might become concerned about that and ask why is that happening and what can be done to alleviate that situation. I think that's really the important question."

A Guttmacher study, released in June 2014, found that about six in 10 abortion providers are "in neighborhoods where more than half of residents are white."
