Charlie's diet is probably part of the reason he's still so vital at almost 97 years old.

He eats very little! A good breakfast, something small, like fruit and cheese or yogurt for lunch, and then a modest supper. He became a vegetarian 8 years ago, but if he's at a dinner at someone's home, he doesn't turn his nose up at any meat being served. He just eats a taste of it.

Also, I'll point out that his father lived into his 90s as well, but not as far as Charlie has gotten. His dad was a smoker and liked a drink or two. His brother died young of heart disease, just as Charlie's mother did. She died in her 60s of heart failure.

His remarkable life is a combination of good genes, healthy diet, and most important, his family lives close by, he enjoys an active social life, and his dedication to his art.

Charlie also belongs to a Uni-Uni church, and he's a nonbeliever! But the minister loves him and said he could belong anyway. His daughter, who lives nearby, has belonged to that church for decades, so Charlie enjoys the people and the good community service that is the center of its mission.

Charlie also has a wicked* sense of humor.

*Wicked in Bostonese means terrific!
