ARE YOU SERIOUS, DR. CARSON?

Ben Carson: If You Accept Evolution, “You Dismiss Ethics,” Can’t Believe In God And Evolution

Or was he testing out a new comedy act after his political career is over when he stated the above?

The Catholic Church (which has approximately 1.2 billion followers) has, through Pope John Paul II, acknowledged that Evolution is real. And if Dr. Carson hasn't noticed, the RCC and its popes believe in God. Also, every Protestant minister I've met and known acknowledges that Evolution is real, as do Rabbis and other people of faith.

I don't know what Dr. Carson's motive is in making ridiculously stupid statements, but his claim about Evolution is as nutty as saying the theory of gravity is not real and believing in it would be dismissive of ethics. It's as harebrained as saying "You can't believe in God and the theory of gravity, or the general theory of relativity."

Why is this important in a presidential candidate? Because when a president is presented with mountains of evidence for a particular, say, military theory or any situation backed up with facts, and that president willfully dismisses it because of his or her religious conditioning, that president would be a real and present danger to the safety of this country. America cannot afford to have its leader, who has his finger on the doomsday button, believing in absurdities and cockamamie ideas based on no evidence.

Republican presidential candidate and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, a noted creationist, once said those who believe in evolution “dismiss ethics” and believe you don’t have to abide by a moral code.

“Ultimately, if you accept the evolutionary theory, you dismiss ethics, you don’t have to abide by a set of moral codes, you determine your own conscience based on your own desires,” Carson told Adventist Review, the magazine of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of which Carson is a member for a 2004 cover story. The interview can be read online via the Web Archive.

“You have no reason for things such as selfless love, when a father dives in to save his son from drowning,” Carson continued.

“You can trash the Bible as irrelevant, just silly fables, since you believe that it does not conform to scientific thought. You can be like Lucifer, who said, ‘I will make myself like the Most High.’”

BuzzFeed News reported last week that Carson in a 2012 speech said the big bang theory was part of the “fairy tales” pushed by “highfalutin scientists” as a story of creation and he believed the theory of evolution was encouraged by the devil.

Dr. Carson, in his confusion, also claimed:

"...the consequences for accepting the theory of evolution would be an abandonment of the human moral compass."

Sorry, Dr. Carson, but an overwhelming majority of scientists and other humans, not infected with nonsensical ideas, believe what you have claimed is the work, not of the Devil (who doesn't exist), but of a very confused and superstitious mind.

OFF TOPIC:

I have been alerted, via email from a P.E. reader, that another impostor pretending to be Sue of Helloooo...Mr. President is posting on conservative blogs using Sue's name and avatar. These people infect those particular blogs by plagiarizing people's comments as well. Click on the name "The Stupid things..." and see that this impostor changed its name to "Sue," and it's posting all over the conservative blogs. It's one thing to parody a blogger, but to actually steal a blogger's name and avatar is what a slimeball does, and it reflects on that person's political beliefs. Slime attracts slime.

We call ourselves “progressive” and thereby avoid the notorious “liberal” label. According to one definition, progressive means “favoring progress toward better conditions”. Gee, who could be against that? But then what do we do when the Republicans or the corporate media make “progressive” a term of derision? Change names again? I believe that running away from the “progressive” label is somewhat similar to that: By running away from that label we are tacitly admitting that the conservatives are right to denigrate the term. So what? I’ll tell you So What! Jesus was the ultimate liberal progressive revolutionary of all history. The conservative religious and social structure that He defied hated and crucified Him. That’s What!

My friend who alerted me this AM also alerted me to the fact that the above fake commenter who stole Sue's "Hello...Mr. President" name and avatar closed the link to his name. As my friend said, these little worms must monitor my blog 24/7, minute by minute, since just when I put up this information, "Just Richards Opinion" hid all evidence.  Worm is the perfect description of these cowardly fakers.

Here's the url address of the "Sue" faker:  https://www.blogger.com/blogin.g?blogspotURL=http://justrichardsopinion.blogspot.com/

And here's what the little faking worm just did:

A better question for Carson related to science would be this.... Dr Carson, are you a "young earth" believer? Is the earth 6000 years old, or millions of years old?

That answer would tell us lots...

Howard Brazee said...

And "liberal" means: Open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values.

It's surprising that a person can apparently get an advanced medical degree without any proper understanding of the theory which serves as the basis of modern biology.

If he had kept up with the modern development of the theory of evolution, he'd know about the growing evidence that human morality, too, is an inevitable product of the process by which we evolved, and has nothing to do with religion. As it is, he sounds like Bill O'Reilly claiming the tides are beyond the ability of science to explain.

Just Richards Opinion said...

Richard needs to be smarter. It was so easy to find the faker and expose him for the idiot he is.

Sue's "Hello...Mr. President" has nothing to do with the moronic comments "Just Richards Opinion" fake Sue blog is spreading around the TeaPublican blogsphere.

BTW, you're welcome.

Slippery little worms, aren't they. They must monitor your blog 24/7. Just Richards Opinion, who stole Sue's name and avatar has already changed his fake blog to "Delusional." Guilty! Guilty! Guilty little worm!

Thanks for the tip, "JRO." The little worm is scrambling to cover his/her/its slimy tracks.

And the real Sue has been alerted.

Who's the "moran" who answers the faker's comments?

Just another example of the force and affects of a blind belief in mysticism and that a mystical Sky God created the heavens and earth in six days and man has been around for just 6,000 years.

Shaw, when you are incapable of independent intelligent thought, why not steal others words, twist them, and post them as your own? Why should we be surprised that this might happen at the Smut Hut? After all, the author regularly posts others work herself without attribution and allows, and by that allowance, agrees with, blatant racist and misogynist comments.

Dave Miller said...

Shaw, I remember when folks like Free and Lisa at least had some level of sanity.

While they never agreed with liberals, that was alright. They were respectable. But over the last few months, both of those places have become known more for fake avatars, stolen identities, pornographic images, anti-semitism, racist comments and more.

The genie is out of the bottle at both their blogs and they have taken to not just allowing the posts to stand, but actively encouraging it. They have moved from respectable opposition, like Western Hero, with whom few here agree, to almost caricatures of conservative thought.

Since Dr. Carson chose to make considerable $$$ with his medical degree, he can
ignore non-religious altruism such as Doctors Without Borders-
"Doctors Without Borders is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning non-governmental organization aimed at providing critical medical care where it is most needed, regardless of any affiliation (be it political, religious, cultural, or any other demarcation separating people).
Doctors Without Borders has been the consensus choice from the /r/atheism community for its annual charity drive for years due to its excellent track record and rigorous dedication to stay above any divisive fray to concentrate on its charity work."
--were Doc Ben a bit more widely read, he would understand that morality (as noted by Infidel, above) is very much like Ben's body and brain, a result of the evolutionary processes of individual and group selection; morality that does not
have to be force fed by priest or holy man.

Ducky's here said...

But ever since Mr. Carson remarked on Sept. 20 that he did not think a Muslim should be president, then refused to retract the statement amid a furious blowback, his campaign has watched grass-roots support grow and donations pour in — and advisers have backtracked, deciding, in the words of one, to “let Carson be Carson.”
---- NYT

He's got everything the fringe base wants.

Look for him to go to 11 on the meter. Much more to come.

Les Carpenter said...

Apparently Dr. Carson's brain failed to evolve beyond the being force fed by priests or holy men stste BB Idaho.

Carson, who is veiwed by over 80% as being honest and having a great character, may very soon overtake Trump the Rump in polling.

Republicans, much to my chagrin, has left reason in the pursuit of fairytale land.

The hostess of the Smut Hut absolutely agrees with the racism, misogyny, pornography, and ID theft she allows there every day. Those are emblematic of her and her friends' "conservative" values.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Ducky, Carson and Trump are popular with a small percentage of the American voting public. Trump is a vulgar buffoon, and the nice doctor is a bit "off," if you know what I mean, where politics is concerned. They both are perfect representations of the TeaPublicans.

Dr. Carson has allowed his theology to swamp his rationality. Calling Evolution the work of the Devil is so out of the mainstream of rational thinking that it falls into the "K00-K00 Bananas" category. He's an embarrassment to his profession. People are laughing at him.

Shaw Kenawe said...

RN, the more Dr. Carson says, the less likely he'll ever be president. Let him continue to speak.

Shaw Kenawe said...

Infidel753 "It's surprising that a person can apparently get an advanced medical degree without any proper understanding of the theory which serves as the basis of modern biology."

Surprising? More like a disgrace. Even his alma mater is embarrassed to acknowledge him as a graduate, despite his successes in brain surgery.

Shaw Kenawe said...

More on how much and why the TeaPublicans love dear old Dr. Ben:

"...the message of the Trump boom —[is] namely, that your positions don’t matter so long as you stoke the resentments of the base. How else to explain an MD like Carson pandering to the anti-vaccine crowd, except as a way of showing that he wasn’t buying the liberal establishment’s shibboleths about science or anything else? Carson was even the first debater this year to invoke, as Newt Gingrich had done in 2012, the name of Saul Alinsky, which is a sort of a secret handshake among the doctrinaire (“The award so far in this Republican debate for dog-whistle rhetoric goes to Ben Carson,” gushed John Fund at National Review). And though he may not support the wars Paul Mirengoff likes, Carson thinks that when we capture enemy soldiers, or even just guys off the street, we should be able to torture them without people getting all “politically correct” about it — and isn’t that the important thing?

Now we have Carson running neck in neck with Donald Trump. The surge seems to have gone to Carson’s head, because last week he said a bunch of odd things.

For one, Carson went on the Marketplace radio show and basically acted as if he’d never heard of the U.S. debt ceiling (Host: “I'm really trying not to be circular here, Dr. Carson, but if you're not going to raise the debt limit and you're not going to give specifics on what you're gonna cut…”). Some of the brethren suggested that Carson perhaps lacked a certain attentiveness to reality or, in the measured words of Leon H. Wolff of RedState, “personal diligence.” While “Ben Carson is clearly smart enough to understand the distinction between the budget and the debt limit,” said Wolff, he “hasn’t seen fit to do even this minimal amount of research.”

BB... somewhat related, I will be up in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico in a week of so for a medical and dental clinic in one of the poorest areas of the country. While everyone connected is a Christian, I am very tight on standards. No preaching, no pre conditions, no discrimination... period.

We treat everyone who comes in, regardless of their sex, race, religion, creed or sexual orientation. Very straight forward. And we do not try to convert anyone.

I've taken a pretty hard stance on this, and it angers some of my other Christian friends, but it certainly makes for better medicine.

Ms.Shaw.....are you scared of Dr.Carson? Do you put more credence in a woman who the majority of Americans view as dishonest and untrustworthy?

Shaw Kenawe said...

Anonymous, it's very tiresome for people to confuse the reporting of what Dr. Carson says with being "scared" of him. That's a very old trope. And it's what the Tea Party folks said about Sarah Palin when we reported what she said. Do you believe we are "scared" of Sarah Palin now?

I have always acknowledged that Dr. Carson was brilliant in his profession, but that doesn't translate into brilliance as a politician, as we have sadly witnessed every time he opens his mouth and says something exceedingly foolish. In one of his latest stumbling, mumbling interviews, he showed he didn't know the difference between the debt ceiling and the national debt. His remarks on the ACA being worse than slavery and his remarks about gays are just plain dumb.

It's quite clear to many of us why the Tea Party supports Dr. Carson, and it should be to you.

No, we're not "scared" of him, but you should be if you choose him to run as your presidential nominee.

This is how Heifer International operates (my niece is a director) -- it originally started as a religious organization, but now it ministers to anyone and everyone who needs its help, and it is among those charitable organizations that have the highest percentage of funds raised going directly to helping the neediest of the needy.

Bravo to you and your organization!

I forgot this, Anon @12:05 AM:

"Do you put more credence in a woman who the majority of Americans view as dishonest and untrustworthy?"

Her numbers were just fine until the TGOP set up their own kangaroo-court style of an "investigative committee" on Benghazi, and Kevin McCarthy publicly admitted to this. So the TGOP's cabal and their goal worked, somewhat. Mrs. Clinton still has high numbers on her ability, knowledge, and experience.

Besides that, I wouldn't trust a man (Dr. Carson) who believes Evolution is the work of the Devil. IMO, that's just plain goofy.

"Howard Brazee said...

Yes, Howard, that's a good definition of "liberal." Although it doesn't define "traditional values." But if one example is to extend civil rights to minorities (something that this country was very slow to do for centuries), then I'm all for discarding the sort of "traditional values" that kept American as 2nd class citizens.

Here's some interesting news about Dr. Carson's support among African-Americans:

"According to Gallup, Ben Carson has a mere twenty-two percent approval rating among African-Americans. In fact he’s even less popular with black voters than white republican Chris Christie. In fact, despite the widespread perception that Donald Trump is a racist, Carson is only two percent more popular with black voters than Trump is.

So this unhappy news begs the question for those supporting Dr. Carson: Did you believe African-Americans voted for President Obama only because he's black (everyone I've read on the far right blogs says so). Then how do those Tea Party people explain Dr. Carson's weak support among African-American voters?

I think I can answer. African-Americans voted for President Obama because African-Americans by approximately 98% align with the Democratic Party -- and that party selected the first bi-racial candidate in U.S. history as its nominee.

Dr. Carson is African-American. Can any GOPer explain why African-Americans don't find his political ideas appealing?

As much as the far right tried to make President Obama's election just about race -- "The only reason A.A.s voted for him was because he's black," the data show that the far right, as is usual for them in these cases, was completely wrong.

If African-Americans cared only for the color of a candidate's skin, as the far right claimed, then Dr. Carson would have 98% of the A.A. vote. In fact, almost 80% of African-Americans reject him and his wacky ideas.

So Ms.Shaw, you feel Hillary's dramatic slide in the polls are due solely to the GOP? Has nothing to due with the candidate herself? Interesting.

Shaw Kenawe said...

I didn't say that, Anon, you did. She does have a problem in the areas where her numbers are low.

But one has to wonder about how she's perceived when compared with the conservative candidates who are running for the nomination, and how those candidates' statements are ignored.

Take for example the fact that the right wingers incessantly call Mrs. Clinton a liar. But then they completely ignore the fact that Donald Trump, their leading candidate has a rotten record in the truth-telling category.

As does Ted Cruz.

So Mrs. Clinton is a liar, but the conservatives supporting Trump and Cruz? They'll just ignore their record of lying because, why?

Mrs. Clinton's email controversy is troubling, but at least it's out for public scrutiny, for all to see and to make a decision on whether that will destroy her chances for the nomination. I don't know.

This blog has posted very little, if nothing, either in support or against Mrs. Clinton. I'm waiting for the debates.

In the end, the American people will make the decision on which candidate, warts and all, they trust the most to lead the country.

Right now, the TGOP trust and support two men and a woman who have absolutely ZERO experience in electoral politics and elective office.

What short memories the TGOP has. In 2008 they were howling about Mr. Obama's "thin resume" and his inexperience and supported the more "experienced" Sarah Palin. But now, candidates who have no experience are hailed as the front-runners of a party that screamed about inexperience when Mr. Obama was running for president. Such confused and misguided people will choose the TGOP nominee. Good luck with that.

Les Carpenter said...

You made a fair and balanced presentation and representation Shaw. It points out thar candidates for office, regardless of party, are at least disingenuous if not outright liars.

All in the pursuit of getting elected and advancing their agenda (s).

Les Carpenter said...

I must clarify... many politicians in both parties are not liars and do attempt to remain truthful. But the desire to win, and the need for popular support of the people nudges even the honest politicians to being disingenuous when deemed by them to be prudent to do so.

Ms.Shaw, there is only one candidate who is being actively investigated by the F.B.I."

Mr. Anonymous, are you an American? In case you are not, here's how our system works:

Innocent until proven guilty. So what's your point?

Also, may I remind you and anyone else who comes here with your observation that the idol of the TGOP, the person they believe is the embodiment of Mom, Apple Pie, the American flag, and all that is holy and good about this country, Ronald Reagan, secretly and against the law, sold arms to our enemy, Iran, and about 130 people in his administration were either under indictment, indicted, or accused in the Iran-Contra scandal.

None of that seemed to lessen the TGOP's adulation or admiration for President Reagan.

So if the GOP and others in this country can overlook the fact that Mr. Reagan sold arms to our enemy, and if those same people can forgive a sitting president for breaking the law, then the little matter, by comparison, of Mrs. Clinton, her emails and her servers, can be overlooked and forgiven as well and we'll all get on with our mundane lives.

Ms.Shaw, you seem to have a propensity to gloss over Hils bad behavior by pointing to others bad behavior....isn't that called deflection.

"Anonymous said...

I wouldn't say so, I'd call it a comparison and how a particular political party reacted to one and then the other.

"Bad behavior?" Selling arms to our enemy and breaking the law and having dozens and dozens in your administration indicted -- how does that compare with using a private email server?

We could say both are examples of poor judgement. But the TGOP has made an American hero of one man who exhibited very poor judgement, and it is demonizing a woman for hers.

Now you've had your trollish fun by deflecting the conversation away from Dr. Carson's idiotic statements. Either stick to the subject or be deleted.

Thank you. And have a nice day.

Dr. Carson's mind-numbing inanity about the Holocaust and Jews and Guns gets a smack-down by Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League:

His most recent burst of blather was over gun control in the wake of the Oregon massacre. As recently as Sunday, on “Face the Nation,” Carson was defending his assertion that the Holocaust would have been “greatly diminished” if Jews had been able to keep firearms in their homes. Gun control laws enacted by the Nazi regime, he contends, were a prelude to genocide.

To say that experts disagree is an understatement. As Jonathan Greenblatt, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, wrote in the Huffington Post: “It is mind-bending to suggest that personal firearms in the hands of the small number of Germany’s Jews (about 214,000 remaining in Germany in 1938) could have stopped the totalitarian onslaught of Nazi Germany when the armies of Poland, France, Belgium and numerous other countries were overwhelmed by the Third Reich.”

Greenblatt added that it is “wholly inappropriate and offensive” to “manipulate the history of the Holocaust and use it to score political points.”

The kindly Dr. Carson continues to make himself look like a blithering boob. What a shame. And what a sad way to tarnish his sterling reputation as a great surgeon. I do wonder about his mental state.
