We've all heard it by now...

Here are some of my thoughts:

State enforced pregnancies are as evil and wrong as state enforced abortions.

When JFK was a candidate for the presidency, I remember his speech about how he would not be influenced by the Pope and the Catholic Church and that he was a Democratic candidate for the presidency who happens to be Catholic.

“The argument was, when push came to shove, a president who was Roman Catholic would ultimately be more loyal to the Vatican because the fate of his eternal soul was at stake,” says Casey. “If Kennedy was elected president, he’d criminalize birth control, he’d cut off foreign aid that helped countries invest in birth control, and he’d funnel tax money to Catholic parochial schools.”

Today's SCOTUS has six Catholics as justices. It appears that they're the ones now who are more loyal to the Vatican than to America. And it's not just the conservative Catholics, they are united with the far-right conservative Evangelicals.

A majority of Americans favor a woman' right to an abortion. The prohibition against abortion is for the most part a religious prohibition, but many religions permit it.

In Israel, a country that has a state religion, abortion is legal; and in some instances, paid for by the state. Abortion is also legal in predominantly Catholic countries: Ireland, France, Italy (where the Vatican City is located), Spain, and Portugal.

GREECE:

Abortion in Greece has been fully legalized since 1986, when law 1609/1986 was passed effective from 3 July 1986. Abortions can be performed on-demand in hospitals for women whose pregnancies have not exceeded 12 weeks.

GERMANY:

Abortion is technically illegal in Germany, but an exception is made for abortions in the first trimester if the patient goes to a counseling session. The procedure is free.

A Nazi-era law from 1933 also forbids doctors from providing information about abortion procedures. The law has been criticized for making access to abortion more difficult.

In England, Scotland and Wales, you can legally have an abortion at up to 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy, in line with the Abortion Act 1967. If you live in Northern Ireland, or anywhere else where abortion care may be restricted, you can legally travel to receive treatment.

EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES:

Europe's formerly Communist countries have liberal abortion laws. The only exception is Poland, where abortion is allowed only in cases of risk to the life or health of the woman or when the pregnancy is a result of rape or incest.

NORDIC COUNTRIES:

Abortion was legalised in the Nordic countries in the 1970s (Knudsen et al., 2003), as part of the general (Western) European trend in the direction of less restrictiveness since the 1960s (Levels, Sluiterb, & Need, 2014).

In Latin America and the Caribbean, women face multiple barriers to free exercise of their reproductive rights, including restrictive abortion legislation.2 In fact, many women struggle daily to gain even minimal autonomy over their intimate lives. Some are raped by their husbands or others, while many more are denied access to contraceptives and reproductive health services and refused the possibility to decide to terminate unwanted pregnancies with safe and legal abortions. Across the region, millions of abortions are performed every year, most of them under unsafe and clandestine conditions, and thousands of women die as a result.3 In many countries in the region, the consequences of illegal abortions constitute a leading cause of maternal mortality.

Latin America remains overwhelmingly Catholic.  Catholics comprised more than 90% of Latin America's population, according to the World Religion Database and the Brazilian and Mexican censuses.

RUSSIA:

Abortion in Russia is legal as an elective procedure up to the 12th week of pregnancy, and in special circumstances at later stages.

MUSLIM COUNTRIES:

In practice, access to abortion varies greatly between Muslim-majority countries. In countries like Turkey and Tunisia, abortions are unconditionally legal on request. On the other hand, in 18 out of 47 Muslim-majority countries, including Iraq, Egypt and Indonesia, abortion is only legally permitted if the life of the mother is threatened by the pregnancy while 10 countries provide it on request. No Muslim-majority country bans abortion in the case of the mother's life being at risk.[6] Other reasons that are permitted by certain[citation needed] Muslim-majority countries include preserving a woman's physical or mental health, foetal impairment, cases of incest or rape, and social or economic reasons. There is great variation within Muslim-majority countries as to which are legally accepted reasons for abortion.

ASIA:

Because abortion is broadly legal in the region’s two most populous countries—China and India—the majority of women in Asia live under liberal abortion laws.

■ Abortion is not permitted for any reason in three Asian countries: Iraq, Laos and the Philippines.

Abortions are legal in Japan, with about 160,000 reported in the year up to March 2019, including 13,588 involving women under the age of 20, according to the health ministry. Abortion pills are illegal, however.

**************************************

Our neighbors to our north and south:

CANADA:

Abortion in Canada is legal at all stages of pregnancy, regardless of the reason, and is publicly funded as a medical procedure under the combined effects of the federal Canada Health Act and provincial health-care systems.

MEXICO:

Since 2021, Abortion in Mexico is no longer a crime, although its legalisation still varies by state. On 7 September 2021, the Mexican Supreme Court unanimously ruled that penalising abortion is unconstitutional, setting an important precedent across the whole country

AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF AMERICANS SUPPORT ABORTION RIGHTS

American Catholics overwhelmingly support abortion rights:

More than half of U.S. Catholics (56%) said abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while roughly four-in-ten (42%) said it should be illegal in all or most cases, according to the 2019 Pew Research Center survey.

Six conservative Catholics on the SCOTUS will make a decision that goes against the majority of American Catholics and non-Catholics. Those six Catholics will overthrow settled law, despite what they testified in some of their confirmation hearings.

And be assured the conservative Catholics and far-right Evangelicals will come after Grizwald v. Connecticut, since some of those Catholics on the Court have made clear their opposition to birth control -- (it is not permitted in Catholic theology.)

What will stop those Six from going after Loving v. Virginia? and Obergefell v. Hodges?

When JFK was a candidate for the presidency,  American Protestants were fearful that he'd be a puppet for the Vatican.

Look where we are now with a majority Catholic SCOTUS.

If this issue won't convince more people to vote out the authoritarians on the Right, we're doomed.

Theocracy and fascism have much in common.

On October 10, 1936 Heinrich Himmler created the Reich Central Office for Combating Homosexuality and Abortion, or Special Office (II S), a sub-department of Executive Department II of the Gestapo.

The German Catholic Church and Hitler were quite friendly.

I read "Hitler's Pope" by John Cornwall years ago, and will re-read it.

"Eugenio Pacelli (Pius xii) helped the Vatican reach the agreement with Berlin in 1933 that helped Hitler destroy the resistance of many German bishops and the Catholic Center Party. Throughout World War II, the Vatican refrained from condemning Nazi persecution of the Jews, even though Pius xii at times tried to help the anti-Nazi underground and supplied the Allies with intelligence. But when the Nazis rounded up the Jews of Rome in 1943, and again when they deported Hungary's Jews in 1944, the Vatican remained silent. Furthermore, Cornwell shows, Pacelli supported authoritarian regimes such as Franco's Spain and believed in a strong link between Jews and Bolshevism. Indeed, his uncompromising hostility to the latter contrasted with his appeasement of Hitler. Cornwell also emphasizes Pius xii's drive for papal supremacy at the expense of fresh thinking."

You are not wrong, Dave Dubya, to see the connection to ultra-conservative religion (Catholicism in the above case) and fascism.

We are experiencing it in this country. Some of the Trumpian conservative governors want a bounty placed on women who seek out-of-state abortions! They want their family and neighbors to squeal on them should they make the decision to have an abortion in a state or country where it is legal! Jail them! Punish them!

I can't believe I'm living in this era of rising far-right authoritarians. But that is reality.

And Minus Eff Jay in his naivete claims the Democrats are the problem?

They will not be content until they've invaded the most intimate aspects of an individuals life. One stat stands out above all - 1 in 5 republicans would refuse abortion even when the woman's life is in danger. The others support forced birth even in cases of rape and incest.

These religious zealots must be stopped before every hard one victory for progress is stripped and their hold on power is consolidated. From book banning, vote suppressing, forced birth to deciding whose sexuality is or isn't legal the GOP are a fascist threat. Vote accordingly.

"Steve Schmidt: The Supreme Court of the United States will soon join the very long list of essential institutions that has completely broken trust and shattered its credibility. That will be the sad legacy of this era and the Roberts Court.

Soon the Supreme Court will strip a RIGHT from American women that has existed for 48 years (2 generations) The Court has expanded rights, limited rights and constrained rights but it has NEVER stripped away established rights for a specific type of person, WOMEN, like this.
The stripping of this RIGHT ( established by the United States Supreme Court in 1973) means that Women will lose agency, control and dominion over there health care and bodies.

The functional outcome will be the establishment of lawful and political control over Women by Men in a way that subjugates women. The confederate states which became the Jim Crow States will be the first to act. Many of these states will seek to ban IUD’s and contraception. The repeal of Roe will dramatically increase the Theocratic pull of the MAGA movement in the States. The “NEW RIGHT” Fascist movement will become more closely aligned with religious zealotry. They will cut a deal and women will lose out in the trade. It’s just starting."

Steve Schmidt: "WHAT TO DO: This is a seismic moment in American life. It is not going to be a stable moment. The current line will not hold. Women will either recover, expand and cement rights or they will continue to be shredded.

Short Term. This issue should galvanize millions of NON VOTING women to become active voters. The mechanics and logistics of this effort will be Herculean. It could be decisive in November.

Medium Term. There will need to be massive voting registration drives aimed at women with a particular focus on the HANDMAID states. It is zero sum. The issue is control. The issue is subjugation.

EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT.

ERA’s that establish fundamental equality between men and women should be written into all 50 State Constitutions and an effort to revive passage of a Federal Constitutional Amendment should be an urgent focus.

The American System of government is a work of genius. It is designed like an escape room. There is always a way out within the system. The Abortion issue will not be settled in the courts. It will be settled in the States by the American people. It will be settled by voting

We stand at a radical moment in American History. Some of the very best writers in America have written deeply important political stories about the rising danger to American Liberty. "

Sadly, Schmidt's words ring hollow to me. As do the words of others like Joe Scarborough.

Folks like them for years worked to enable the system we now have. By supporting candidates and in Schmidt's case, running campaigns of candidates who for the most part support 90% of the policies of Pres Trump, they made this decision possible.

Where were they when Thomas, Roberts and Alito were confirmed? Where were they years ago when the Moral Majority first stepped up to the plate? They were there making it all possible. Heck, Morning Joe was one of them.

Their claims to now be outraged are incredibly disingenuous now, absent a full throated rejection of longtime GOP policies and ideals.

There is literally nothing Liz Cheney stands for politically, and she voted with Trump at over 90% too, that these guys would oppose. And yet she's been silent on voter's rights, and Roe v Wade. Because she supports the standard GOP positions.

The only difference for these guys is Donald Trump. Once he's gone and the party returns to their genteel racism and denial of rights, as opposed to the blatant examples we see now, they will return to the fold.

Most Dems have no idea how bad this is.

And the GOP is licking their chops.

The media is ignoring the horrifying fact that this draft ruling also says Griswold vs Connecticut was wrongly decided because our constitution does not explicitly give us a right to privacy.

Silly me, I thought by banning unreasonable searches the authors were clearly protecting our right to privacy. I would bet they assumed that it is so glaringly obvious that a right to privacy is as much a key to liberty as the right to breathe is crucial to our right to life that it didn’t need to be stated explicitly.

The right to privacy is a sine qua non for freedom and democracy to exist. It is one of the things autocrats take away by spying and encouraging citizens to spy on each other.

Authoritarian regimes like the USSR and Nazi Germany even rewarded kids for reporting on their own parents. Undoing Griswold is even more threatening to our freedom than is overturning Roe.

Most people don’t understand that before Griswold states could deny even married women access to birth control because preventing pregnancy is supposedly a violation of “natural law”. Natural law (i.e. God’s law) is the basis of the Catholic Church’s opposition to birth control and Catholic judges like Clarence Thomas has used that concept, to justify legal positions.

Many anti-abortion activists also want to ban some of the most effective forms of birth control — the pill and IUD as well as the “morning after pill” — because they claim they cause abortions. That belief is based on a religious belief that even a fertilized human egg has a soul and is therefore a person.

As I said in a previous comment, The non-Catholics were terrified that the US would be "Vaticanized" should JFK attain the presidency. With 6 conservative Catholics on the SCOTUS, that fear has come true.

Opposition to birth control is a CATHOLIC Church opposition, based on a pope's opinion. And members of the current SCOTUS have expressed their agreement with that.

Shaw Kenawe said...

PS. On July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI stunned Catholics around the world with his announcement of Humanae Vitae, "Of Human Life," a document in which he forcefully reaffirmed the church's previously stated position on the use of artificial birth control, calling it "intrinsically wrong."

If you read the history of that 1968 Papal Bull, you will find that a commission authorized by Pope Paul to study birth control was ignored by Pope Paul because he didn't like the outcome. The outcome? The commission, which was comprised of devote lay Catholics, doctors, theologians, found that the RCC's opposition to birth control did more harm to Catholics and their marriages than it did good and advised the ban be lifted. Pope Paul ignored the findings because he was afraid if the RCC admitted it was wrong on this doctrine, then people would question others by the RCC. So he ignored the findings and thus, Humanae Vitae reaffirmed the RCC's ban on artificial birth control.

90% of Catholics, btw, use birth control. The opposition to birth control was a man-made (by a previous pope) doctrine.

vIt’s the 1st clause of the 1st Amendment.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,”

Our founding fathers feared the church above all others - the church WOULD use government to make laws to compel their flock’s obedience - to rule USA.

Make no mistake -- this is what the Dominionists want: As Secy. of State, Mike Pompeo said this out loud: "One nation under one God." That's what he wants, and he will run for the presidency on that.

The Dominionists don't are about the US Constitution, they care only for their version of religion, they want to impose it on all of us.

Dominion Theology: Dominion theology (also known as dominionism) is a group of Christian political ideologies that seek to institute a nation which is governed by Christians and based on their understandings of biblical law.

See Below:

Shaw Kenawe said...

In a 2019 speech at the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the pro-Israel group, Mr. Pompeo told an anecdote about Tibor Baranski, a Christian who saved 3,000 Jews in Hungary during World War II. Then he said, “As secretary of state and as a Christian, I’m proud to lead American diplomacy to support Israel’s right to defend itself.”

The next day, Mr. Pompeo announced an expansion of Trump administration anti-abortion policies, saying the United States would stop funding foreign organizations that support other groups that perform abortions. It is a policy popular with conservatives, Catholics and evangelical Christians.

PS. Apparently Pompeo is ignorant of the fact that abortion is legal in Israel (to whom we give billions of $$$ in aid) and in some cases abortion is paid for by the state of Israel.

From an Israeli News Site:

When Roe v. Wade Dies, Israel Will Be More Liberal Than U.S. on Abortion

Most women in Israel can get an abortion on demand, often at no cost – something U.S. states will soon be able to outlaw, according to leaked Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade

Ray,

That's the bottom of the barrel reasoning, and they use that sort of hyperbole to make themselves feel satisfied that they're on the side of "The Lawd!"

I imagine neither of those jokers ever had to face the horror of a decision to abort for heartbreaking reasons: a deformed fetus that cannot live outside the womb, a fetus that stops growing for reasons unknown, a mother who develops a life-threatening disease that makes carrying the fetus to term dangerous, a 10-year old who was raped by a family member, etc., etc.

No. In their limited understanding of why the state should stay out of women's wombs, they believe women just want to "kill their babies." These sort of stupid statements make them feel all fuzzy and warm inside, thinking they're so much better than those who face horrific decisions, so much better that they prefer to have The State force a pregnancy to term under any condition. How's that for "limited government?" They're all for government in women's wombs!

(They're the same folks who, after real, live outside-the-womb babies were slaughtered in their classrooms, those folks said, "Well, that's the price we have to pay for our 2nd Amendment rights! So if some babies have to be killed, we have to accept that bad things happen!")

They're no better, IMO, than the Chinese who forced women to have a abortions.

State forced pregnancies or abortions are wrong!

The movement to outlaw abortion started 40 years ago. Republicans have been more successful than Democrats in American politics in those years. That gave them the edge in appointing Supreme Court justices and they have always made it a public stand that when they got that edge they would overturn Roe/Wade. Roe/Wade was a judicial decision not legislative constitutional law. Why did the Democrats not push for a constitutional law starting 40 years ago? The only option now is to make a constitutional law making abortion a legal right.

"An invented right that has existed for less than a half century isn't much of a right, is it?"

The 13th Amendment was ratified December 1865. Was that an invented right? The Bible has only good things to say about slavery, and the pro-slavery folks always used the Bible to prove that the Lord had no problem with slavery. Godly pastors even said so from the pulpit. So should that "invented right" have been taken away in 1913 and every African-American and Native American have gone back on the selling block and had their families broken up? After all, that "invented right" was less than 50 years old!

Was women's suffrage an "invented right?"

If the SCOTUS took that right away on August 18, 1968, would that have been considered acceptable because it was only a 48 year-old decision?

The right to control one's own body and not have the State control her body is a fundamental right.

Right now, there are red states considering legislation to hunt down girls and women who would go to other states or countries where their autonomy is respected:

Lawmakers in Missouri weighed legislation early this year that would allow individuals to sue anyone helping a patient cross state lines for an abortion. The law was ultimately blocked in the state’s legislature, but experts expect such legislation to gain more support if Roe is weakened or overturned.

“I think states are not going to rest with just saying ‘there won’t be abortions in our state.’ I think they’re going to want to ban abortion for their citizens as much as they can, which would mean stopping them from traveling,” said David Cohen, professor at Drexel University’s Kline School of Law and lead author of a forthcoming article on cross-state legal issues that could arise in the abortion context.

“We’re going to see state-against-state battles that are really going to divide this country even deeper on this issue,” he said.

So how will that play out? Will state troopers stop cars at the border and question girls and women? Will they be arrested and thrown in jail? Will those red states empower their citizens to sniff out any girl or woman who may be pregnant and report one her travels? What will that Soviet-style spying on one's family, neighbors, and friends look like in the Land of the Free?

Well, that depends on which country (or state) one lives in, doesn't it? Our neighbors to the north, Canada, disagrees with what you wrote:

"Abortion in Canada is legal at all stages of pregnancy, regardless of the reason, and is publicly funded as a medical procedure under the combined effects of the federal Canada Health Act and provincial health-care systems. However, access to services and resources varies by region."

Canada is culturally similar to the U.S. -- mostly White, Anglo-Christian -- yet the Canadian people and their government completely disagree with you, and the SCOTUS!

Most of the world's countries, in fact, have more liberal laws on abortion than what the SCOTUS will decide on in June.

As for the Evangelicals and right-wing Trumpublicans who are strong supporters of Israel -- abortion is legal in Israel and even paid for in some instances by the State in some cases
