and whose preferred candidates lost in the 2022 midterms, who was impeached twice, who's under criminal investigation, who incited an attack on the U.S. Capitol, who stole top secret government documents and lied about it, that guy wants to be president again.

That's about all I can say about that.
Trump running for president again "shifts the dynamics of the GOP field" rather like that iceberg "shifted the dynamics" of the Titanic. If he gets the nomination he'll lose again, now that even a lot of Republicans are sick of him. If he doesn't get it, he'll spend the whole election throwing tantrums about being robbed and discourage his supporters from voting. This is what the Republican leadership gets for not biting the bullet and stopping his rise in 2016.
And yet his "base" is clueless.
The only thing that will protect the nation from tRump is WISDOM. Something in very short supply in the land of conservatism & republican delusions. Our system could very well insure a repeat of 2016. The real question is, will the democrats self destruct once again.
Les, of course the establishment Democratic leaders will do nothing because they are just as beholden to our corporate overlords as the GQP. It's the kids who will be leading the way and based on threads I've read on the Bird app, they've got this. They are tired of being told to sit down and listen to their elders when the elders have proven time and again that they don't understand the challenges facing humanity here/now.
Some of the issues of yesterday carried forward by politicians who are basing their campaigns on fear of the other are nothing burgers and the kids know this. They've grown up listening to the fear mongering all their lives and what worked yesterday just doesn't make the grade today.
Of course my ego is in a bunch - who wants to realize that they are irrelevant? (Narrators voice: it's a rhetorical question as the answer is no one). That said, my meditations have taught me that I'm powerless, that it's not up to me, it's up to thee (whomever Thee happens to be). There are discoveries waiting for us just around the future. There are answers discovered long ago and placed on the shelf due to corporate greed that are again relevant.
Biggest take-away right now is when ones enemy is shooting themselves in the leg and foot get the heck out of the way!
It is going to be a LOOOONG two years.
