General John Kelly: "He said that, in his opinion, Mr. Trump met the definition of a fascist, would govern like a dictator if allowed, and had no understanding of the Constitution or the concept of rule of law."
We can try to "let it go", but it never leaves. Turn everything off and live a monastic life, separated from family, friends and others?
Hardly.
We ask were the soldiers of Germany, Italy and Japan evil at their core? Or were they swept up in something larger than themselves, perhaps questioning a bit, but ultimately unable to resist the siren song of power their leaders posited?
I'm sure they believed their justifications. Even the meekest of those supporters must have done so, because it became too difficult or even too toxic for them to consider otherwise.
In Germany it was called "Volk".
Essentially a nationalism that triumphed over all ideologies, including the pacifistic Christianity of Bonhoeffer. Today we see in our country an American version of Volk, MAGA.
It blurs or even shape shifts reality to what ppl need to obliterate their guilt, support of and sometimes even unconscious approval of concepts, actions and beliefs that perviously even they themselves would have dismissed as evil.
But we have hope, as MLK had hope. African Americans waited hundreds of years for America to begin to live up to the words in the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution.
And while we were dragged kicking and screaming, we finally made that start.
When I read people who write the following... "I know the Left would disagree with me and remind me of January 6, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say REPUBLICANS DON’T ACT LIKE SPOILED BRATS WHEN WE LOSE. I hope the Left remembers that today…so far, they have not. Even ex presidents’ wives can’t take it...", I am at a loss. Almost everything in that statement is demonstrably false, the product of our American Volk, MAGA.
The writer knows it is wrong and her readers know it is wrong. The families of the beaten and forever scarred DC Police know it is wrong. But like many in the Christian community in Germany and the Shinto community in Japan during the pre WWII years they've made their peace with MAGA, which deep down they know is wrong, or in many instances, is evil.
But, there is hope. Because today we celebrate a man who lived during even worse times, suffered the ultimate cost and died to make America a better place.
Martin Luther King, Jr... January 15, 1929 - April 4, 1968.
May he continue to rest in peace and may his memory continue to challenge America to provide for the "common good" and be a "more perfect union."
That bit of magical thinking you quoted about Republicans not acting like spoiled brats is what got Trump re-elected: the complete disregard for reality and willfully refusing to see what is in front of their noses.
We are now running head- long into a very dark and dangerous period for our country. Those who refuse to see it are the same people responsible for what will happen.

And, inaugurate a felon.
The good die young.
While the evil thrive to destroy.
Indeed. MLK was acquitted. Trump was convicted. What was the difference? The Caritas of the past has gone.
What can we do Les?

Inaugurate? thought it was a coronation - anointed with oil of Royal Musk,
crowned and declared "Wholly Roamin' Emperor"

Trump is a convicted felon, adjudicated sexual assaulter, Liar, Cheat, and Fraud. What human rights did Trump ever risk his life for?
You, like the rest of MAGA live in a fantasy world fueled by your paranoia, resentments and fears.
That will NEVER make anyone or anything great. It’s a recipe for the end of a democratic republic, led by a criminal.
I chose to celebrate the life of a man who lifted us up, MLK. Not the man who’s placed the presidency in the gutter —Trump.
